Story.

User Image
The year is 1954, in a world where creatures of metal walk and the gears are turning, and the relationship between lands is shaky at best due to the recent second World War. The people of Romania are struggling with recovering from World War II, and the country is in a state of political unrest. In Wallachia in particular, a new voivode (meaning "lord", "prince", "duke", or in some cases "count") has risen to power after the previous ruler died suddenly, and soon, more people with political power start to disappear. Many rumors circulate about the leader's ill intentions, and those who believe these rumors to be true join the underground Resistance. The job of the Resistance is to find and protect those who are believed to be targeted by the Voivode and his court, and also to put a stop to their plans, whatever they may be. In truth, the Voivode's true intentions are unknown to everyone but himself, and the Resistance is convinced that his playing things close to the chest is proof of his villainy. In this story, anyone can be a hero, but no one can be trusted.

Hear the ticking of a clock
The sound of life itself
No one really wants to die
To save the world
Lord Lyndon Octavious

"Go away."

The knocking continued, dispite his groan of protest. "Sir," the man on the other side of the door pleaded, "My lord, it is a matter of the gravest importance."

Lyndon Octavious let out another groan.
"What is it?" He really didn't have the will or energy to deal with matters of state right now, but as the prince, he could not shirk his duties...

"May I come in, sir?"

"No, you may not. You can tell me perfectly well from out there. Out with it."

There was a small, awkward hesitation as the messenger hemmed and hawed for the right words. Then, "It's the Resistance, sir..."

"Yes, what about them?" He could not hide the annoyance in his voice--the Resistance had been a thorn in his side since the day he took up his father's crown. He didn't really percieve them as a threat to him, but they were irritating to say the least. Especially when they interrupted him when he wished for nothing more than to be left quite alone.

"Your double, sir--he's dead. They murdered him this morning, thinking it was you."

Lyndon shot up out of his leather chair, his heart beginning to pound and pain wriggling in his chest and stomach like some kind of irritating worm.
"What?!" He had known that the Resistance was persistant and that they hated him for many reasons, but never had he taken them for assassins! "Are you sure it was them?" he asked, limping towards the water basin to wash the sweat from his face.

"Yes, m'lord. They're practically gloating in the streets. The Guard is trying to put an end to it, but it's slow going. Those who are loyal to you are too frightened to fight the Resistance members parading about town... Those who have were killed or wounded. Everyone thinks you're dead, sir."

Lyndon cursed, running a trembling hand through his brown locks.
"Send out a message--tell everyone that I'm not dead--only very badly injured. Tell everyone that I'll be fine within a few weeks."

"But that would mean that the assassination attempts would continue!"

"Don't you think I KNOW that?!" the nobleman snarled, but he stopped with a wince as the pain stabbed through his gut. "Just... get the word out," he forced through gritted teeth. "We'll figure out everything else later... I will not let Wallachia dissolve into chaos! Things are bad enough as it is..."

"Yes, sir..."

He listened intently as the messenger walked away before sinking to his knees. Assassinations, stress, illness... He wouldn't have been surprised if he was dead before the year was out.

Deke
Dusty, worn boots trudged on the cobblestones of the city. Something big had happened judging by the raw euphoria mixed with fear in the people's faces. Why would it matter to him? On his back his rifle was strapped, held tightly to his body by a leather thong in plain sight, accompanied by the sword on his hip. He had come a long way, and these weapons had served him well. Trying to escape from the crowds he was slammed with the full weight of a rambling, violent drunk, muttering something that could have been a threat, insult, or possibly even an apology. The latter was discarded as a false hope as the punch was thrown. The Russian mercenary ducked to the side, grabbing the crook of the man's arm and drawing his sword.
"Daddy!"
Deke glanced back at the ten-year-old girl who had exclaimed it. The mercenary let go of the man, deciding instead to kick him hard into the cobblestone street. An light punishment compared to what he had planned before. He made him way onward from the crowd, eyes fixed on the largest manor in the distance.

Elena

Elena understood why everyone was so happy. She really did. What she didn't understand was why things were getting so violent. She'd seen it all get started--a royalist man had come out from his home to yell something in support of the Voivode, and a member of Resistance within the parade shot him twice in the gut. Things had dissolved from there.

For the longest time, she had walked on in numbed silence, but then something caught her eye: a man--a foreigner, most likely just came into town-- bumped into another, and just when hostilities were about to start, a child cried out, causing the foreigner to pause. Then he returned his weapon to its sheeth, turned his back on his almost-enemy, and walked away. Elena couldn't help but admire a fighter like that--it took more courage to walk away from a fight than to start one, which was a lesson many men within the ranks of the Resistance had yet to learn.

But then she realized just where his path was leading him. That was the Voivode's castle! Not good--he'd get run down in the streets if he got too close. Quickly, she broke away from the parade and ran to catch up with him.

"Oi! Oi, you! Don't go that way! You really don't want to go that way," she puffed after catching him by the sleeve of his shirt. "That's the prince's mansion. You shouldn't go there, if you can help it."

Deke's hand instinctively fell to the hilt of his sword, guessing that yet another fight was about to arise. He turned slowly as he heard her advice, looking at the young woman.

"Maybe I do. Nobles are always looking for someone like me,"

he explained slowly, his Russian accent thick. He looked down at her hands, trying to restrain him and arched an eyebrow, clearing his throat pointedly.

"I think I'll take my chances."

In the distance shots were fired, the distinct crack echoing like a harbinger of death.

"Things are just going to get worse around here. You'd better get yourself inside."

He would hate to see what they'd do to a young woman amongst the chaos.

Elena

She snorted. "Me? Oh, no. I'm on the Resistance's side--no one would dare touch me. Besides, you won't find any nobles there--the Voivode's dead. He was assassinated this morning."

She looked the man over. He was dressed in traveller's garb, and it was evident that he was a fighter of some sort. Just what kind, she wasn't sure, but the vibe he gave assured her that he was quite capable of taking care of himself. But still, with the rest of the Resistance trigger-happy, and the guards at the manor terrified of a full-on raid of the late Voivode's estate, a walk up to the gates would spell out suicide for any man.

"But hey, if you're looking for a job, you could always join the Resistance... Though I'm not sure what we'll do now that the Voivode's kicked the bucket..." She scratched an itch behind her ear before continuing, "I mean, we pay well and everything. Better than any stinkin' noble's gonna ever give ya."
PostPosted: Sat May 15, 2010 1:54 pm

"And why would you care what happens to me?"

he asked dryly. His eyes flicked towards the manor again, blinking slowly as he considered the options he had given her. It sounded appealing, but he knew better.

"A country without a ruler, an untrained, undisciplined army without a goal. You would be a fool to assume you'd be safe no matter what side you're on. The other nobles will see you as a threat now, and they'll obliterate your untrained resistance. I've seen this many times, it's always the same. You won't stay organized, you're bandits and farmers. It was over before it began."

He tugged yet again at the hand she had on him, eyes looking into hers.

"You're not safe here. Leave."

Elena

She scowled. "Hey, now! I care because I'm not like the others. I don't like all the killing. And secondly, there are no other nobles." She stamped her foot down on the dusty ground to emphasize her point. "That's why we wanted to kick the voivode off the throne. It was because of him they all ended up dead. They dropped like flies, one after another. We were all scared--we thought we were next. That's why the Resistance is here. Don't tell me that we don't have a reason to be here. And as far as 'untrained' goes, most of our soldiers were soldiers under the voivode's father's rule; some of them were even generals. They know what they're doing, and they make sure we know, too."

She huffed. How could someone just waltz in to this city and try to tell her what's what? He had no idea what was going on!

Deke couldn't help but be impressed by her heated defense.

"Well then stay. I have no right to kick you out anyways."

He looked back at the manor but finally turned fully towards her.

"Then take me to whoever you think will have a job."

he said simply, scanning her with his eyes. It was odd, she seemed rather young, but she was more mature. He doubted she was quite as young as she looked, guessing her to be in her late teens. He turned to examine the crowds cautiously, feeling something more was amiss, but not commenting to the younger girl.

"Lets get going."

Elena

She beamed. "Great! I'm sure the Boss will be very happy to see you!" She led him off past the crowd and into a series of winding alleyways, the mud from the streets squishing noisly underfoot. Finally, they arrived at an unassuming house on the edge of the city; it looked like a fairly poor home, which was average for Romanian houses, but was kept in good shape. No one would have suspected anything even remotely close to the Resistance to be attached to the place, much less it be their headquarters.

Elena pushed open the creaky door with a small, calloused hand and called, "Father, I'm home! I brought a new friend." This, of course, was a simple code for, "Hey, Boss, I'm back. Possible new recruit on the way." There was a small pause, in which some seemingly indiscernable mumbling could be heard. It only took Deke a moment to realize that the disembodied voice was speaking a foreign language. Elena's ears perked up. "Huh? Oh, alright." She turned to look at Deke, and smiled apologeticly. "I've got to run, but the Boss is more than willing to see you now. Catch ya later!" And with that, she dashed off to wherever she was needed.

Deke reached his hand towards her but she was already gone. Instantly his mind leapt to the worst case scenario: It's a trap!
His hands snatched the flintlock pistols at his sides, aiming them into the darkness of the house.

"Выходи, либо умереть."

He caught himself, correcting his language to better suit the situation:

"Come out or die."

It was a rough translation at best, but it got the job done. He had been in these situations too many times to be caught off-guard now. To be caught off-guard meant death in his line of work.
