Character Name: Eshelley
Age: Seventeen
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Craft/Rank: Farmer Apprentice / Candidate
History: Eshelley’s father is a hard working, good humored fellow. He and her mother married young and preceded to produce a small army of children to help with the farm that had been in his family since they came to the area. Eshelley is the youngest of seven children and one of only two girls. Her older sister was married and moved away when Eshelley was still very young, and her knowledge of her is limited to a few short meetings and the occasional letter. They never got very close. Her brothers and her, on the other hand, were about as tight as family could get. As they got older, got married and started having kids of their own, they all stayed in the area and continued to work on the farm. All the extra hands, and extra skill, allowed their family farm to grow and grow until they were the largest in the area.
Even though she was the only girl her mother didn't spend any more attention on her than on her brothers, treating them all equally. The effect was rather like being raised by a pack of wolves. She learned that she was going to have to watch her own back for her brother's tricks and to play a little rough. They didn't give her any slack for being a girl either. She was one of the boys, for as long as she could remember. Since their farm was outside of the hold proper, she had limited interaction with non-related children. Even when she was around them, she was always with one brother or another and had no need for other company. So she never really had any friends until a nursery farmer named Thian arrived from Fort, at the request of the local healers.
He had come to raise medicinal herbs that couldn't be grown without his particular brad of skills. Eshelley's father happily offered them the land they would need, and any help he would require. With him came his wife and daughter Lorna, who was about Eshelley's age. Although she wasn't quite sure what to make of her at first, they soon became good friends. As the years passed the two girls became as close as sisters, and Eshelley eventually grew into something that vaguely resembled female.
Eshelley had always had a way with plants. Her father used to joke that she had magic hands, anything she touched would grow. Thian saw it too and offered to train her in his field of study. Eshelley had been fascinated by the foreign plants since he had first set up shop and agreed happily. She spent the next period of life devoting herself to her new craft, being meticulous in her efforts. There had not been one moment where she had thought of doing anything besides what she was, until one afternoon.
She had gone to the market to pick up some routine supplies when a rider arrived from Malvren rider. Riders had come to their hold to Search before, but she had never actually been there when it happened. The dragons had landed and... then... she wasn't entirely sure what happened after that, actually. It was all a bit of a blur. She remembered staring at them for a while until one of them turned its head and stared back at her. After that she remembered a rather mean looking rider informing her that she had been chosen as a candidate, asking her some questions and then offering to bring her to the Weyr.
The idea hadn't even crossed her mind before then, but after it sunk in, the effect was overwhelming. She had never left her family home, never gone so far as to another hold. It was an exciting prospect. Her family was proud of her, though she hadn't really done anything to earn their pride. The only one disappointed she chose to leave was Thian, who was sad to loose his star pupil, but there is still the chance she wont impress and he has hope to she her a master yet.
Description: Brown, slightly curly hair that falls over her shoulders, but not much longer. It curls particularly around her face, framing it nicely. Her features are pretty, but not devastating. She has big brown eyes, and thick dark lashes, which are probably the prettiest part of her face. Her nose is slim and unremarkable and her lips are leaner than she would have liked. Eshelley is a bit on the shorter end of things, about 5'6" and has a petit build. Her arms and legs are skinny, but muscled from working out in the fields.
Personality: A mark in her hands is in good hands. She is clever, calculating, and can be deceitful when she needs to be. She can be abrasive, often because she doesn’t have a great deal of non-familial social experience under her belt. The idea of a personal bubble is lost on her, because she didn’t need one at home. She also has a habit of missing other people’s personal bubbles. (And when she does her pride refuses to let her acknowledge it.) If she is awake she is working, downtime isn’t her thing. In general she has a positive outlook and an energetic spirit.
Eshelley is not above a little deception if she thinks its for the best. That isn't to say that she is above hard work, in fact, its quite the opposite. She is a strong believer that hard work is the only way to get anywhere in life. Eshelley never tries to use someone maliciously, she isn’t out to hurt anyone but sometimes people don't see quite eye to eye with her, and it can lead to problems. There are a lot of straight laced, by the book people around and they don't always agree with her occasional underhanded practices. Rationally, she knows she cant win over everyone but she wasn’t used to being rejected at home and cant deal with it very well now, so she doesn’t put herself out there. Sometimes Eshelley hurts people without meaning to, not realising where certain boundaries are or committing some crucial social faux pas. She has learned that its just better not to let anyone get too close. Any friends she makes are usually superficial, even if they don’t know it.
Thanks to her sheltered upbringing her experience with hold folk was limited, so the culture shock for her from moving from hold to weyr was dwarfed by the loss of not having her family around at any given moment. She feels a bit lost without having someone she knows by her side all the time, not having someone she knows she can rely on. She had always been pretty self sufficient but she has become even more so since coming to the weyr. After spending most of her life out in the fields, working with plants, spending so much time cooped up in a cave should have been a bit of a shock. As it was however she found herself surprisingly comfortable. It disturbed her a little that she didn’t miss her plants more, she thought that they were her passion and now she feels like she is without a purpose. She doesn’t know what is going to happen if she fails to impress and she has to go back home…
Eshelley tries not to dwell on her worries, preferring instead to throw herself into something to take her mind off of it. Her insecurities and personal issues are (by force of will) a minor part of her, generally washed out by her strong personality.
Other: In her first week of candidacy she was awarded a flit egg for doing some work for the Candidate-Master. He hatched into a beautiful little silver firelizard named _(tba)_.
EDIT: I feel like I forgot something important...
