Which one?
There is two types of speaking in toungues that I know off. The is the one where you speak in another language that you never learned(usaly happens when they are witnessing), and there is what some call the Holy toungues, which is a language that is not any found on Earth. This is the one most people think about when you say speaking in toungues.
Saldy, I don't have either one. I look foward to the day I can use those gifts, but for now I work with the decernment of spirits.

I often sing in tongues in the car while I'm driving alone, its awesome. I just feel really comfortable when I do that. Since we are talking about the subject, some people may not know a whole lot about what exactly speaking in tongues is and how to do it. Anybody have a good definition?

myescapeandahalf you can't practice speaking in toungs, it just happens, during prayer, you just do it, speak another language that you don't know, its not very common, you can't choose the language or anything, i've never seen anyone do it, but i would like to It's actually not uncommon. Try visiting a pentecostal church.. or even more specifically an apostolic church adn you'll see it happen a lot. I myself have it. On the note Lithanus made about there being 2 diff kinds. That is true.. there is speaking in tongues. and the gift of tongues referenced in corinthians as a gift of the spirit. I have been present for a multitude of those too. Now, if you are there when a manifestation of tongues and the interpretation is given. Dunno how to explain it, but you can just really feel his presence in there. All the hairs on my neck start to stand up and I get major goosebumps. The time waiting for the interpretation just blows your mind. Definitely an experience to be had. Speaking in tongues is a manifestion of the gift of the holy spirit in teh believers of Christ. Anyone can get it. If you feel unsure of it even existing, being ok or what have you.. Just try it. Pray in a certain room at home or somewhere private everyday for weeks. I also recommend perhaps accompanying your first time with some prayer and fasting as fasting can heighten your spiritual senses. You don't really control what you say. For a lot of people, they have no idea what they are saying at all. If you have ever read in Romans 8 where it says the spirit makes intercession for us.. I believe that is part of what it means. cuz, sometimes there are moments when you are so heavy into prayer.. but some full of your issue, that there are no words you can find to pray the very thing you need to say or pray. Like, you are in the right issue.. but you just cannot put across the right articulation to explain to him. In those moments when speaking in tongues takes over, you just feel this extreme peace because you know it's been prayed for as best as it possibly could be prayed for. Now, in my years as part of an apostolic church.. some church goers can be around it so much.. that they can immitate the sound of it. But, you could tell if it's real or not because there is usually a strong enough anointing accompanying it.

I know about it. People believe that if you don't speak in tongues you won't go to heaven. That's SQUAT!!! 'if you confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that thou hast raised you from the dead thou shalt be saved'. So as long as you're saved you're O.K. I believe it's a gift. I'm going to heaven and I can't speak tongues.

I've heard arguements on both sides of the aisle here. Like Dee Doo said, some people seem to think that Christians who don't speak in tongues either don't have the Holy Spirit or aren't really Christians.
That's totally wrong. One of the most Christian women I know only ever spoke in tongues once, when she was young. It's a gift, not the gift. However, some people get afraid when they hear that. Some people actually fake speaking in tongues so others will think they are saved.
Some people speak in tongues that are not of God and don't even realize it. Fallen angels also know tongues.
Other Christians seem to think that speaking in tongues no longer happens. Usually they think that the spiritual gifts went away when the apostles died. There is no biblical basis for this belief. In fact, the Bible points in the opposite direction. The gifts of God are irrevocable (Romans 11:29).
The spiritual gifts are our tools given to us by God. Without tools, it's hard to build the Church.
I think the gift of tongues and heavenly tongues are given today, but I don't think that Christians who do speak in tongues are better than those that do not. God gives different gifts to different people.

I agree with AbbyGirlForever -speaking in tongues truly is a gift from God, and it's not something that you JUST DO, it really happens in the presence of the Holy Spirit. God is able to give as different kind of spiritual gifts, and speaking in tongues is one of those (I don't speak in tongues, but I see it happen every time I go to my church). One should not feel bad about not having this gift, since we all are still equal in God's eyes no matter how good or gifted we are (I believe so).

Most Baptists don't believe in the angelical tongues that the pentecostals do. We believe in the gift of tongues that comes when you are witnessing to someone in a completly different language that you dont know basicly anything.

It is a gift from God. And as such, I think we as Christians should be sure that it is, at the time we use it, from God and not merely something to impress the church. I've seen alot of that. It can also scare off people that may be new in the church or that one may be witnessing to. But if you have the gift, and it's truly from God, use it.

I "have" it also, and I cannot describe how joyjul I feel when I use it. It is a gift from God, but as AbbyGirl said, it doesn't mean you aren't a Christian if you don't have it. That is definitely not true.
I come from a church where, well, how shall I describe it? Many people have the gift and we use it in prayer a lot. I do believe that the gifts of the Spirit are still alive today.
