what type of filters do you recommend for taking portraits, if any?

I guess that depends on what kind of portraits you're taking and on what kind of camera with what kind of lighting but...to make things simple, no, you don't need any filters. Of course, you'll be more prone to wanting filters if you're shooting black and white film.

Of course, you'll be more prone to wanting filters if you're shooting black and white film. i mainly shoot a lot of black and white but i have a digital camera. still no need?

I like to do all the softening that filters were once used for by hand with photoshop. Also, even if you intend the shots to be black and white; you may find you have more versatility shooting in color.
The only filter I think (almost) everyone needs is a circular polarizer! If you shoot outside at all anyway wink Cuts glare, makes the sky pop, gets through reflections, good stuff!

Yea, if I want black and white photos, I always shoot in color first and then transform it in photoshop. It just affords me so much more control over a photo than if I were to shoot with black and white film instead.

Yep! I like to play in the channel mixer for weird looks biggrin can't do that unless you start in color!
