So our school district is broke and they cut the elementary music program. That means all the elementary music teachers are replacing many of the upper class band directors in the district or are getting layed off. Our bd is being bumped and he's gonna have to teach math at another school next year. He's the best bd any of us have ever had. This sucks. So much...... emo emo emo

So I'm wondering if anyone else is going through some of the same problems we are in our band.

My school isn't, but I don't know what I would do if we lost our BD. He's amazing. I'm so terribley srry for your loss. I hope it all works out in the end.

The school board cut our music program.
Like...no band here at all.
It sucks.
No...band...at...all...
I'm shocked I'm still alive.
But if we want to, we can go to another school and play with their band...
I would like to, but they are not accepting any percussionists at all. gonk
But we convinced our Band Director to create a community band.
And he did.
And now, we are possibly playing at Graduation. biggrin At least I still get to play...
But I really miss marching and all that good stuff.

this has got to be one of the worst problems in america today. education is taking cuts everywhere, and when schools try to fix their budgets, the first thing they want to cut are the music programs! why not do away with other useless classes like weightlifting or ag classes, music education is far more important than many of the other classes we have to take. The sad truth of it all is that school bands were initially started to play at football and basketball games (which is fine and all, humble beginnings) but have been so overlooked in recent years that most of the time we dont even do that anymore.
I swear, if the school even considers cutting our music program (even after I graduate) there will be at least one very loud, very angry protester. probably more than that.

I totally agree to that...

-WARNING BAND GEEK ABOUT TO RANT-
First off, I am SO VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.
Many may say its not really a loss, but it truly is, losing a great music educator, no, a teacher, no, a hero that is very important to you and your peers, just because off the damned educational system.
In my life, the educational system in hawaii has cut a lot of things, as well as taken many things away from me.
As well as deprived me of many oppurtunities.
The only thing that is dear to me that they havent taken [yet] is band. As a fellow participant in the music program, I would like to say how IMPORTANT IT IS TO THE STUDENTS [us] AND WHY IT IS SO DEAR. Many people have claimed, stated and argued the point that music AND music education is a vital part of life and prosperity.
Now, the issue is, WHY WOULD THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM DEPRIVE STUDENTS OF THE ONE THING THEY CAN RELATE TO?
Speaking from personal experience, Having an abusive step father, band would give me a way of escaping and enjoying the time I had with my friends No, My FAMILY And truly enjoy my life.
Many people share the same story
Band directors, are more then JUST teachers,
theyre mentors IN LIFE and IN ART.
And , not just that, but theyre like FAMILY.
You can play the most sexual...erm funny jokes on them and theyll just laugh it off and get you back xD
But really, The memories I have in band, are much more then just music theory and blah blah blah
its a family. and a shelter. Music itself is also a means of getting emotions out
some people may not find emotion in say, playing a classical piece, but IN the end, it is the most EMOTIONAL and PASSIONATE way of expressing yourself.
END RANTor notundefined

Thanks guys for being so supportive of the music program. California is really broke and I heard it's happening all over the state. You really don't realise how bad the money situation we're facing is until you get sucked into it like our city did.

I was going o post something similar to this until I saw this....

So yesterday we learned soemthign quite depressing. Our music program is getting half cuts. We are going from 5 music classes to 3. Band, orchestra and a percussion class. that is only if the 1% tax increase passes. if not, we get cut completely.f we get cut completely, i will find soem way to mvoe.

So currently we do not know wether we will have marchignband next yea ror not. Our bd might have to get a second job, and so he may not have time to do rehearsals. it is liekly we will onyl do football games. The government is ripping ym heart out slowly....

I feel you, I think California and Hawaii are getting hit the hardest as far as education goes.
I mean, In this state [Hawaii] we will probablyhave to cut the fourth year of high school D:
Well..thats what they want
and they cut a whole month of school
its jus tnot good..
and I am pretty sure california is really REALLy bad at the minute..

First off, let me say how extremely sorry I am for you.
But, at least you know your that your (and why) band director is leaving and he didn't just leave you all for no reason a week after the national competition.

ours was cut down to part time. we were worried we weren't going to have a marching band next year, and we even planned student staff for more of a pepband then a marching band.

However, because of high enrollment in band classes, he was given a second band class. Now, they brought him up to fulltime by giving him a mariachi class.
