Balela trotted along, not quite sure where exactly she was going. She was going somewhere, and that was all that mattered. The plan was to wander around until she ran into someone... That couldn't be too hard, could it? It could take days and days, but she was determined to find a pride, or a rogue, or... or... Well, something! Balela was getting hungery, and her mother had drove her off without teaching her to hunt first.

Her mother... Why had she been angry? Balela had only just been able to walk out of the den when her mom had started screeching that her life was ruined and chased her away. Balela wanted to break down and cry at the horrible memory, but crying wouldn't get her anywhere. And anyway, she'd show her mom what a mistake it had been to kick her out!

User ImageThe young rogue lion raked his extended claws against the trunk of a tree. Daire was enjoying a good stretch after waking from a well-deserved slumber. It hasn't been long since he left the company of his brothers... but things have been going pretty swell. Not to mention his mane seemed to have grown out to its fullest, now.

Daire scanned the horizon, it was dawn. The clouds were tinted with hues of firey pinks and oranges. It was a beautiful sight, but it only caused a sudden pang to pierce his chest. He had no one to share the experience with. Aahh, this is what loneliness must feel like. Daire had hope that the adventures ahead of him would be less empty. For now, however, it was time to hunt.

The lion was totally oblivious to the orphan cub trailing behind him as he set out in search of prey.

Balela looked up to see a brown lion raking his claws on a tree. Well, I guess the plan worked! As he looked around, she could have sworn he had seen her. As he walked away, Balela wondered at how he could have possibly missed her. She ran after him, deterimined to catch up. He better know how to hunt!

"Excuse me!" she gasped when she was in hearing range. If she was pushed aside after traveling so long... Then I'll just keep following him! Balela put the last of her energy into sprinting ahead of the lion. She sat down in front of him, and she wasn't going to budge. "Could you teach me how to hunt?"

The peep of the tiny cub caused Daire's ear to twitch. He paused, uncertain if he actually heard anything at all... But then Balela appeared in front of him. Daire tilted his head slightly, examining the little lioness as if he's never seen one before. She was mostly black, with presumably white paws and belly fur that were caked with dirt and grime. It was obvious her mother had been neglecting her.

The lion frowned. Suddenly remembering his manners, his ankles buckled, allowing the red bangs of his mane sweep the dirt as he gave the cub a royal bow. "M'lady."
When he rose, he expressed a new demeanor. A gentle smile graced his lips as he replied, "Of course I could teach you. But where are your parents? Do they know you've wandered so far?"

Balela watched as the lion frowned. Was he going to chase her off? No, now he was bowing. M'lady? What did that mean? Oh well. He was going to teach her to hunt! "Yay!" she said, her spirits lifting for a heartbeat, but when he asked about her parents, she felt her eyes sting and blinked back tears. "I don't know. They don't want me anymore. I don't think they care where I go."

Balela jumped up, wanting to forget her mother. She was going to learn to hunt! "I want to be a great hunter!" she proclaimed, her tail swishing behind her.

So, this cub was an orphan. That would explain why she seems so tired and desperate for food. The thoughts saddened him, but he remained in his graceful demeanor. "I'm sure you will be a great hunter." Daire chuckled, paws sweeping gently across the dirt as he started forward. "So, what is your name, m'lady? Mine is Daire." The lion looked over his shoulder to make certain she was following him.

"What kind of meat do you crave? I'm kind of in the mood for zebra." He chortled at the thought of the tiny lioness taking down a full blown zebra. That would be a sight to see, but they should probably start smaller... especially if this was the first time Balela had ever gone hunting.

For the moment, it seemed Daire's painful loneliness feeling had vanished. He sighed happily, satisfied by the company little Balela provided him with.

"I'm Balela! M'lady? What's a m'lady?" Balela tilted her head slightly for a moment before she followed Daire. "Nice to meet ya, Daire.'

"It doesn't really matter to me what kind of meat it is. Whatever you want. I don't think I could get a zebra though. Zebras are huge." Food is food. I just want to stop feeling so hungry. Balela wondered what would happen once the lesson was over. Would Daire leave her to her wanderings, or would she be allowed to follow?

"Yes, it's nice to meet you too, Balela." Daire smiled as he eyed a herd of gazelle in the distance. He licked his lips, it'd be easy pickings... but he had tiny company with him today. "M'lady... It's short for my lady. And you're a lady. A beautiful lady, no doubt. I can't imagine why your parents discarded you with such cruelty." He stopped to gaze at the cub, eyes deep with concern. "But don't worry..." The lion stopped short of finishing his sentence when he spotted a hare not far from their location.

"Look." Daire whispered, "That looks like a nice juicy meal. To catch him, you got to sneak up on him real quietly... get as close as you can before you pounce. But don't let him see you. Can you do that?" He nosed Balela in the direction of the rabbit. "I know you can."

Balela made a face at the thought of being a lady. "I'm not a lady! At least, I don't wanna be one." she proclaimed. Ladies never get to do anything fun!, she thought. All they do is sit around and talk and giggle and they can't do anything fun!

"Yes!" she said, already slowly moving forward and checking where stepped. Her mouth watered at the thought of food. Balela looked at the hare. It seemed like it didn't know she was creeping up on it. When she thought she was as close as she could get, she sprang... And missed. When Balela got up to chase it, it was able to easily outrun her. She walked, panting, back to Daire when it was ovious the hare had escaped.

"Hahah!" Daire laughed, trying to lighten the situation. "It was a good try! You almost got it!" The lion tilted his head, trying to hide the concern he had for the small cub. "It's a lot easier to catch stuff when you're not already tired, though..." His blue eyes lingered on her for a moment, before looking up to scan the surroundings. He spotted a gazelle and her fawn that had wandered from the herd. Perfect.

"I'll catch something for you, and you can eat... then rest for the night and we'll try hunting again later, okay?" He glanced back to her with a smile. "I won't be long, just watch me carefully."

Daire sank to the ground, letting his shoulder blades display his every movement as he krept towards the vulnerable, grazing creatures. He flicked his tail, clawing the ground paciently as he waited for the perfect moment to leap.

Balela was a little disapointed, but not by much. She really hadn't expected to make a successful catch her first try, although she had hoped she would. "I got pretty close, didn't I? I'll just have to try again..." She was tired, and she honestly wanted to rest first, but she didn't want to make the impression that she was giving up.

"Okay!" Balela brightened at the prospect of a meal and some sleep. She watched intently as Daire sank into a hunting crouch and crept towards the gazelles. I sure do hope he catches them!, she thought.

Daire threw himself against the wind as he galloped towards the herd with an impressive speed. In a leap of grace, he landed one in his paws. It appeared to be the weakest of the herd, but it still proved to have a good fight in him! Daire clung to the beast with his life as it thrashed furiously. The rest of the herd fled from the predator, leaving their companion to die in his claws.

Finally, Daire ended the prey beasts' life, and dragged him towards the hungry cub. He grinned, bloodstained muzzle digging into the carcass so Balela would have an easier time picking away at the meat herself.

After tonight, they'd rest, and he'd give the cub a real hunting lesson.
