Is Grace that glistening, beautiful double-edged sword?

As a baptized Christian I have chosen to follow the path of Jesus to find God. In my bible studies and in a lot of other Christian youth groups/events I like to partake in the subject of grace is eventually touched upon. It is said that through God's grace we are forgiven.
Of course when it comes to its definition....things get....hazy. The reason I see it as a double edge sword is because its the most beautiful thing next to a soul that God can give (because it grants us entry into Heaven), but it is also a crucial element that is not in our control (suppsing God, too, has free will and grace unlike our souls isn't a given with our existence). I ask you:

>What's your definition of grace?
>How does one know he has received it? (or is this a "wait-til-you-get-there" thing)
>What is its correlation to mercy, if any? (because my understanding of these two often exclaimed, seldom explained traits of God are also...hazy).

If you could point me to Biblical passages I would be deeply thankful; my understanding of Scripture is currently limited and I'm still learning, which is why I joined this beautiful guild! smile

Well, you have asked a beautiful question. What is God?
I don't like Scripture, so I'll ask you to forgive me for not pointing that any good bits out.

God loves you, I bet you've had this said to you a trillion times by your friend and family, your pastors and youth groups, the Christian on the street corners and the Mormons that visit your house. You know this, but do you know to what scale?

God will cure your illnesses, bend the wills of nations, and even forgive your sins at the whisper of prayer of need. That fact that he does this is grace, the fact that the only thing he knows he can get in return is your love makes it His Grace.

Grace is a beautiful thing as it is the giving of something of great value for something that seems to be little. You've already received it, every time you truly kneel down and from the heart ask God to forgive your sins. If you truly want his grace you will receive it and it will be something of joy. Think of it this way, have you ever opened up a present on Christmas day? Well the feeling of receiving grace is like that, only exploded on a scale you cannot imagine till you truly feel it.

As for mercy, I'm afraid I can't find words to describe it. Can someone help me out? And while they’re at it does anyone know any good verses?
