It was a bit strange for Shimmer to go wandering off. Sharkal had taken great pains to make sure his firelizard was trained exceptionally well; she was a gold, after all, she had the mental capacity to learn and retain commands. It wasn't often she wasn't found wrapped around her boy's shoulders, crooning or otherwise adding to the conversation. Often rewarded with little hunks of sausages, Shimmer didn't know where else she'd rather be. Except today, apparently.
Sharkal had been sentenced to sacking firestone when Shimmer had popped off. It wasn't exactly odd; she tended to get just as bored as he did with chores, but when she didn't return, the blond began to find himself irritated. When she wasn't nestled into his bed upon his return to the candidates' quarters, Shark found himself just shy of furious. His lizard didn't do this kind of thing! So he'd taken to searching the Weyr inside out, checking usual spots like the kitchen or the Weyrbowl.
When Shimmer was no where to be found, the weyrbrat finally decided to poke his head into the Weyrlings' barracks. Oh, sure, maybe he wasn't allowed in there, but the blond didn't plan on staying. Besides, they all had lots of lizards, it was very possible Shimmer had vanished to play with some of them. That aside, it's not like anyone would see him, right?

'Hurry mine, I itch, the little one itches too. Where has the oil gone?' Vespereth quietly rumbled her her's, snuffling about in the blankets on Cass's bed as though the jar might be hiding under them.
"Darlin', its not hiding in the blankets." Cass said, bemused as she looked up from rummaging through her bag. She knew she had just seen it here a little bit ago. She, Vespereth, her blue flit Ohm, and the mysterious little gold friend he seemed to have picked up had all just come from a nice hot bath at the springs, and Cass could all but see their skins drying out.
A chittering from under the bed drew both her and her dragon's attention and she set aside her bag and peered under it, Vespereth doing the same. Her newly hatched blue (only a week old, a gift from her friend L'pin) squeaked happily as he and the gold flit he seemed to be getting on quite well with rolled the missing jar of oil out from under the bed.
"Ah, you brilliant little creatures!" Cass said with a grin, taking the jar of oil in one hand and scooping Ohm up in the other, lavishing him with petting and appreciation, making him croon with happiness. The little gold cheeped at her and the young rider placed Ohm on Vespereth's back, his favorite perch and gently took up the gold as well, stroking her and telling her how good she was to help little Ohm. Whoever's flit she was, she was well trained and friendly. Cass placed the mystery gold on her dragon's back next to Ohm and the two cheeped at one another.
'Can we go now mine? I would like to be oiled out in the sun. It is warm there, I don't like being in here when there is nice warm stone and sun outside.' Vespereth said with a pleading look to her whirling green eyes. The green never seemed to mind being a perch for Ohm, in fact, she seemed to quite enjoy it, especially when Cass was busy with some chore or task that didn't involve taking care of vespereth herself. She seemed very fond of the blue, and didn't seem to mind the new addition to their party either.
"Alright alright, lets go and get you taken care - oof!" Cass had been looking over her shoulder as she walked out the door, resulting in her running directly into a young man just as he stuck his head in the door.

Shimmer was more than happy to play with this blue and his girl. His girl even had a dragon, and she did like dragons! The gold didn't mind all the petting and rearranging; Sharkal had trained her well indeed, and helping was something Shimmer found she liked to do, regardless if their was a sausage waiting for her at the end of her trials. More than happy ride alongside Ohm on Vespereth's back, she barely even noticed the blue's girl collide with another young human.
Oh, wait a minute! That was her boy!
Sharkal couldn't bite back his startled yelp as he went tumbling backwards, having poked his head into the weyrling barracks just as a weyrling happened to be wandering out. So much for not getting caught! The blond scrambled to his feet, torn between brushing his pants of and giving the female rider a piece of his mind when he decided he'd do that later. He'd certainly had his fill of female greenriders in recent history, that much was for certain.
"Watch where you're going, shardit!" he snapped, scowl already set in place. "You ought to- Hey! That's my firelizard! I've been looking everywhere for her!"
And sure enough, Shimmer tipped her head and crooned softly, shuffling around on the dragon's back as she watched the confrontation unfold. Her boy would never change...

"Shardit yourself!" Cass said back, putting her hands on her hips and staring up at the intruder. She was about to continue and give this boy a piece of her mind when his next words caught her off guard. Looking back over her shoulder where Vespereth was with the flits, Cass' mouth formed a little 'o' of surprise.
"That little darling is yours?" she asked in surprise, looking back up at the rude intruder, raising an eyebrow and giving him a once over out of curiosity.
Vespereth rumbled in warning at the boy as he started shouting at hers as she moved forward to the girl's defense, flits still on her back. 'This boy is very rude mine! He's not even supposed to be here and he's yelling at you.' The little green gave a snort at the hypocrisy. 'Lets go, mine, if he wants his little one back, he can come get her outside. I'm itchy and starting to get cranky. He really won't like me when I'm cranky.' she said and pushed her way out of the door, past the boy and out into the sunshine. Vespereth may have been the smallest of the latest clutch, but she had grown quite a bit since then, and though still very petite, she had more than enough muscle to push the boy aside and get out. The green was normally a very cheerful sort, but shard it all, she was itchy.
Cass watched her green shoulder the boy aside, though not hard enough to knock him off his feet, laughing a bit "Look, I'm sorry I knocked into you, but you really oughtn't be sneaking around in here like that." she said "Come on outside though, I need to oil Vespereth before she starts getting cranky. Your pretty little gold could use some oil too, you can share mine if you like." she said with a fetching smile as she slipped past him and out the door after her dragon and the firelizards.
Vespereth had settled herself down so that she was laying on her belly, wings spread out slightly so that they too could catch the warmth of the afternoon sun. Ohm hopped over as Cass approached, and the girl deftly caught him up and placed him on her shoulder. She sat on her knees beside her dragon and set to work, smiling at the little gold as she sidled this way and that out of her way as she worked. Her green let out a long, relieved sigh as she rubbed the oil into her hide, making Cass' smile broaden.

Sharkal was slightly taken aback when the young weryling cursed right back at him. It was all he could do to keep his jaw from falling upon. Once he remembered himself, he clenched his teeth with an audible click, fixing the rider with a fierce snarl as he wrinkled his broken nose (shardit, ow!) and folded his arms over his chest. He wasn't about to be intimidated by a girl, rider or not! (And that was someone's fighting dragon she had there!) Of course, the dragon was a different matter, making soft noises as she pushed herself between obnoxious weyrling and mouthy weyrbrat, but even Sharkal knew enough to realize dragons didn't actually hurt people. Except at Hatchings. But that was different.
Shaking his head as his train of thought began to derail, opening his mouth to fire off a retort when girl and green pushed right by him and out there door. Hey! Wait a minute, he was standing right here! "Rude..." he muttered unhappily to himself, pushing a stray strand of hair away from his face before turning and trotting after rider and dragon. They still had Shimmer, after all. They were probably holding her hostage!
"Look," he hissed when he finally caught up. "Y'all can't just be going and taking other people's lizards, even if you are a dragon rider." An undeserving one, the black, jealous part of his mind hissed; girls shouldn't be on dragons when there were plenty of males about. "She's mine."
Shimmer sighed, then, flexing her wings as she cast her boy what could only be described as an exasperated look. He was far too volatile, some days.

Ah, so he was one of those 'this man's dragon' types. How ridiculous. Their opinions had hurt Cass at first, until she realized that there were people who didn't mind female riders too, liked them even. The majorigy of Vespereth's clutchmate's bonded's were friendly to her. She was even good friends with most of them. The ironic part being, of course, that she and the only other female rider from that clutch hated one another.
Over the past few weeks, Cass had been perfecting her technique on how to deal with boys such as this. His accusing her of stealing his firelizard only cemented her course of action.
She laughed at him.
"Steal your firelizard?" She asked, still laughing a bit as she turned her gaze from the boy with the broken nose and back to her dragon, who idly opened one blue eye, rumbling slight encouragement for her to keep working. "Don't be ridiculous. You should know that you can't keep a firelizard anywhere they don't want to be." she remarked, sparing him an arch look "Besides, its not as though we've got her tied up." She said with a gesture to the little gold who still perched on her dragon.
Having gotten the worst of the patches on Vespereth, Cass took Ohm from her shoulder and cradled him in one arm as she gently began to apply oil to a few small patchy spots he had developed. He was still quite young and growing, so his hide took nearly constant care, just as Vespereth's did.
"Go ahead and sit down." the petite invited her accuser, pushing the little jar of oil towards him "Your gold needs oiling too." She looked up at him again, eyes large and dark in her heart shaped face, framed by short blond hair "That nose looks like it hurts. Somebody punch you?" she asked curiously.

She was laughing at him!
Whatever peace he'd be trying to reason in his mind was gone, whatever niceties Sharkal possessed shutting off the moment his fragile ego was challenged. How dare she, laugh at him! The youth drew in a steady breath, willing himself to grow a few inches as he puffed out his chest. Of course, it was a bit of a silly attempt, what with a dragon sitting right next to her. "N-no," he stumbled over his words, trying to justify all his wild accusations, "but you must have used your blue 'er somethin' to get her to stay here. Shimmer's a real good flit, she doesn't just wander off and sit on dragons." She hadn't before, anyways, and as far as Sharkal could see, there was no reason for her to begin now.
The blond's eyes widened a little and he could not help but frown at the invitation. What was a this kid trying to pull on him, anyways? But what pointed out was truth, and even Sharkal could not deny Shimmer's need to be taken care of.
After muttering something that sounded suspiciously like 'mmrrrthankyou', the weyrbrat offered his forearm to his lizard and on Shimmer leapt, receiving a hunk of sausage for her efforts as her boy rearranged himself, using that handkerchief Norra had given him for split lips for the oil pot, instead.
"Huh? What?" Sharkal's face quickly grew storming, blue eyes glinting hints of grey as he stared holes into his lizard, unable to gaze at Cass steadily. "Yeah. Some she-wher. The other girl in your clutch. Uh. I don' know her name, but her green was all spotty and she had firelizards." He shrugged, face scrunched up as though he'd just eaten something foul. "No good, piece a'-" Deep breath, Sharkal. That was long since passed. "An' I didn' even deserve to be hit, not like that!"
The more people he could get to sympathize, the better!

Cass did her best to school her amused expression, finding it obvious that this guy was definitely not the kind who liked to be laughed at. So, as she listened, she worked on Ohm's hide, petting him lovingly as she did so. He really was such an adorable, loving little creature. She was so thankful that L'pin had kept his promise and given her the egg that had held him inside. She decided it would be best to wait until the boy had calmed down a bit before explaining that there was certainly no way a mere little newly hatched blue could keep a queen anywhere. When he spoke of a familiar person though, a look of disgust crossed her face.
"UGH, you had a run in with Y'ul?" she asked, immediately sympathetic "She is the worst!"
Vespereth cracked one eye open and gave a little huff of agreement, winning her an affectionate pat from her rider before the girl continued speaking.
"You're hardly the first, let me tell you! Did you know, when I first met her, she almost punched me in the face too? Just because I spilled a little flour on her?" She asked, leaning towards him conspiratorially, a frown on her full lips at the memory "If L'pin hadn't been there to hold her back, I probably would have ended up worse than you! Shards, at the hatching, while I was just feeding vespereth right after hatching," another fond smile towards hers broke her frown for a moment before she turned back to Sharkal " I actually congratulated her on impressing, and then she went and elbowed me in the face! She's so horrible, can't control her urges in the least." Cass said disaprovingly as she set the well oiled Ohm back on her shoulder and turned to add some more to Vespereth's hide.

Hitting other girls? Ah, she certainly was the little penned beast, wasn't she?
Sharkal glanced up when Cass leaned in. Normally, the youth would have considered such close quarters to be incredibly endangering, but for whatever reason, the internal alarms remained silence, so the weyrbrat allowed the greenrider to share her story. It would be a lie to say the blond wasn't interested in what Cass had to say, because he was. Not to say he liked Cass that much at all, but certainly Y'ul had no reason to hit a fellow rider (nevermind a weyrbrat, honestly!).
"She-wher," he agreed, nodding sagely. "She came into the kitchen while I was doin' chores, yanno? An' her flits were all goin' crazy and she had this egg and started demanded I give her meat er somethin'." He snorted softly, clenching his jaw at the very recent memory. "An' I was on dishes, see, so I just made a joke, but then she goes an' starts threatenin' me so of course I don't actually give her anythin'. And she punched me! Right in the face! An' if her spotty little dragon didn' get in the way and knock me over, she'd have hit me again!"
Normally, Sharkal would spit to illustrate just how much he didn't like the greenrider in question, but some nagging bit in the back of his mind told him this was not appropriate. "She doesn't deserve that dragon, that's fer sure." Shimmer gave a croon and the candidate pulled his rag away, sparing his golden lizard the briefest of smiles. "Think you're done," he told her, rubbing her affectionately. Reaching into his pocket, he offered the firelizard a small piece of sausage. Shimmer accepted the reward and immediately flitted over to Ohm, trying to offer her new friend the snack from where she hovered just above Cass' shoulder.

Cass nodded vehemently in agreement at Sharkal's 'She-Wher' comment. It certainly did describe the other female to a tee. Well, to Cass it did anyways. She poured a little more oil on her cloth and worked it into her dragons hide, making Vespereth sigh in pleasure as she did so. It was very hard for the green to get worked up about anything, even her rider's injury, when she was basking in the warm afternoon sun and being oiled so well by her's. Not that she didn't care, of course, but the green hardly even remembered the incident. The only thing that really stuck was how much she had been upset, and how much Cass disliked the other rider.
Ohm chirped as the queen offered him a bit of sausage, and he sniffed it curiously before he eagerly took a bite out of the tidbit, crooning in delight.
Cass looked at the little pair and smiled "You know, I think they are becoming quite a good pair of friends." she observed, trying another tact to get Sharkal over the idea of her 'kidnapping' his flit. "So," she began, looking at the boy now "Are you a candidate?" she asked curiously.

Sharkal kept his eye on his Queen; while Ohm did not look particularly harmful, the candidate was still well aware the blue had lured Shimmer away from his side, if only temporarily.
The glimmering Queen chirped delightedly as the young blue approved of the snack, holding the rest out in her little forearms to her new friend. Her boy might have all sorts of reservations about new people, but she certainly didn't! She also knew there would bee much more sausage later, so Ohm was welcome to have her entire treat.
The weyrbrat had to snort at the friends comment, rolling his eyes as he rocked backwards into a more relaxed position. "They're jus' bein' friendly. Firelizards can' remember stuff like friends." Honestly. Girls thought everything could be friends, that was the problem with them. What did they think they were going to do when Thread fell, anyways, make friends with that too?
"Huh?" The blond finally spared Cass his gazed, albeit only briefly, before licking his lips and gazing somewhere else. Eye contact was something Sharkal rarely held. "Not really." He shrugged. "Born and raised here. Don't need to be 'Searched out' like some of them others. Jus' haven' Impressed yet, that's all. You from around here? I don' recognize ya much."

"Oh I don't know about that." Cass remarked when Sharkal tried to shoot down her friend's comment "I think firelizards remember more than most people give them credit for. They might not remember specific events, but I think they'd remember having a particularly strong emotion about someone or something." she pointed out.
When he let on that he was a weyrbrat, Cass smiled "Me too. Born and raised here in Telgar. I had only just made up my mind to stand last hatching since I thought there was a gold egg on the sands," she grimaced slightly at the memory of how many girls had been dissipointed by the bronze that had emerged onto the sands from that egg "it was a good thing I did too, or I never would have met Vespereth." She said with a fond smile to her dragon, kissing her on her brow ridge.
'I would have found you wherever you were, mine.' was the sleepy reply.

Sharkal rolled his eyes. There might be some validity to Cass' argument, but as long as he could get away with disagreeing with her, he would.
"Huh. You musta been real quiet n' stuff then." It was impossible for the blond to have never seen Cass before, not if she was a weyrbrat like himself, but it was more than likely she just hadn't been memorable. After all, Shark spent to majority of his time playing 'eat or be eaten', so if Cass hadn't been one of the one making him miserable or the one he could run to (and he would never, ever run to a girl), then there was no reason for him to remember such a face. It was probably a good thing she hadn't turned out to be the goldrider, really. Shark seemed to make enemies with most of the female population these days.
The awkward silence enveloped them again as Cass mentioned her dragon, and Shark began to fidgit.
"Well. Thanks for watching Simmer, I guess. I got chores an' stuff." Not that he had any desire to do them, but still. It wasn't an option. "I should prolly get goin'."

"I worked in the kitchens a lot." Cass said with a slight shrug. There were a lot of weybrats at Telgar, it didn't surprise her that she didn't know them all. She was sure she had seen them all, but that didn't mean she knew all their names. Most of the kids tended to run in certain groups anyways. Most likely she and Sharkal had hung out with completely different people.
Cass looked over at the boy when he actually thanked her, and smiled "She's welcome anytime." she said, and Ohm chirped his agreement. Vespereth had since fallen asleep, much to her rider's amusement.
"You're welcome anytime too." she added, almost to her own surprise, but smiled all the same. It never hurt to have more friends, she figured, and if she could turn the opinion of on female rider hating boy, then perhaps she could hope to do the same for others.
