Nerit stretched slowly in the late afternoon light, she held her front paws out in front of her and flexed her claws. The chocolate lioness wriggled her shoulders to ease the tension in her muscles. It was about the time that she was usually left to her own devices, when one of the pride's guards, Thoth, had asked her to search for his daughter, Hecate. She knew of the young guard and was sure that she would be able to find the young girl with ease.

Unfortunately, Nerit had underestimated the task and found herself walking along one of Hecate's usual routes for the siamese colored female. Working put the lioness' mind at ease, her sons and daughter were adjusting into their new role within the pride and they were no longer sleeping at home. These events troubled the mother who was used to them tagging along on her errands or playing nearby.

Amalthea had no assignment for the afternoon, or in fact for the evening. She was daringly avoiding the company of others, though she would not run off if someone approached her. Or, that was her excuse. She wasn't sure what to do with herself, she rarely seemed to have an idea now. She tried to keep busy but it wasn't easy and so she spent as much time as she could with the other slaves.

When she spotted Nerit, she had no idea she was looking for her sister but she did want to go and say hi. Perhaps offer her some help, though she didn't look like she was in a hurry.

"Nerit!" she called out, picking herself up and walking out to meet her friend.

For being so observant she hadn't spotted the young slave before Amalthea called out to her. Nerit stopped at hearing her voice, she hoped that it was the young guard she was looking for so she could stop this wild hog chase, it was becoming a bit ridiculous. Nerit wasn't all together disappointed by seeing her friend Amalthea, maybe she would have news from her father.

"Amalthea! It is good to see you, my dear. Have you seen your sister Hecate or your father?" She asked warmly,
"Perhaps one of them sent you to find me?"

Nerit liked Amalthea, she was a nice enough lioness, and a small part of Nerit felt for the young lady. Nerit had been born into the slave class and knew from the time she could walk and talk what her fate would be. Going through the sleeping ceremony would be nerve wracking enough, but waking up to hear your entire family has acquired different classes...that was something else all together.

"Hecate?" she repeated, stopping a conversational distance away from Nerit and shaking her head, "I haven't seen either of them, why would they be looking for you?" She didn't sound confused, only curious. It wouldn't be surprising to know they needed her help or something, or that she was already in the midst of something.

"Are you busy?" she asked.

"Oh, your father sent me off looking for Hecate, she's late for her turn watching one of the borders and I thought perhaps I would find her around here, no such luck. I thought seeing you that perhaps she had shown up for her duties," Nerit turned her body completely towards Amalthea and sat down.

"Not terribly busy, I'm sure your sister has shown up by now and I'm just looking about for no reason. Did you need help with anything? You know, I'm always here to help."

Even when they were not her children, Nerit felt the need to mother and smother, she'd really grown into her role as a mother with her last litter. She didn't talk about Indu's upbringing much..it wasn't exactly a happy topic. She sometimes blamed how wonderful her children were on Unyezi, certainly she couldn't raise anything but brats.

She smiled at Nerit's explanation of what she was looking for, it sounded like Hecate for sure. But her father wouldn't have sent Nerit for her unless she was getting quite late or he really needed her not to be late. Unfortunately, Amalthea couldn't remember the schedule for guards. She didn't really need to know it unless someone want her to accompany them.

"I don't need any help, but maybe I can help you make sure Hecate did find her way," she offered, knowing it probably wasn't best to just assume she had gone off when she'd been asked to do something. Nerit didn't have to do that just because she had shown up.

"I'm not doing anything anyway," she added.

"If you'd like to tag along that would be a lot of help. Know any places that she likes to frequent? Any friends that she might have lost track of time with?" Nerit didn't know too much about Hecate, she only knew Amalthea a bit more, and only because they worked in the same areas. They were born around the time her own litter was born and Nerit was too preoccupied with her own brood to get to know anyone elses'.

Nerit stood, "It wouldn't be a very good example if I ignored a request, now would it?" Thinking for a moment she added, "How have you been Amalthea, any interesting?"

"I'd love to tag along," she said brightly, pausing to think about the places that Hecate liked to go so they could check there for her. It was too bad she hadn't spoken to Hecate earlier or she might have known exactly where she had been planning to go.

"I have some ideas but we won't know until we go, we can start by going to find Atlas, he's usually around his den," she said, nodding, starting off to lead the way, "I've been OK, trying to keep busy. Rika found me yesterday, we were playing hide and seek."

Nerit nodded and started to follow Amalthea, it would be easier to find the missing guard with someone around that knew a lot about her. Atlas, that was their brother, Nerit mused, she liked that this family seemed to be still close even with the gap in their ranking. She was happy that her own cubs had been born under surveillance so they would all have the same rank and see one another as equals. Would they still have seen each other in the same light if they were of different ranks?

"Is your sister often late for her shifts?" the older slave inquired, was this a one time deal? Or was Hecate often late and there was no need to worry about her absence.

"Isn't Rika lovely?" Nerit beamed at the thought of her little granddaughter, "I suppose being a first time grandmother I'm a bit bias, but I love those little darlings so much. Of course, I love my children, but there's something to be said for grandchildren..once they get fussy their mother can take over from there."

Indu was as good a mother as expected, she was a bit self involved but she was growing into her own in the mothering department. The pale yellow lioness often asked for advice and that made her particularly happy.

"I don't know," Amalthea answered with a shrug, trying to think of a pattern in Hecate's behavior but she didn't honestly know enough about Hecate's work schedule. Well! She knew a fair bit but it wasn't like she was there for all of it, or even much of it. It was hard to say but she hoped her sister wasn't frequently late, and she cared enough about it that it seemed unlikely.

"Rika and Andy are both a lot of fun," she agreed brightly when Nerit commented, and talked about them so positively. She loved listening to the way mothers talked about their cubs, and grandcubs. Perhaps because it wasn't something she'd really had, or knew if she had or not.

"They're already so big though," she commented thoughtfully, "Nobody else is getting ready to have cubs?" Nerit's other set of cubs must have been big enough by now. Nevermind that Amalthea was certainly old enough to have cubs, she was talking to the wrong lioness to be thinking so but she just didn't imagine it happening.

Hecate hadn't meant to be late for her duties, she also hadn't meant to fall asleep in the middle of the afternoon, but the sun had been so warm and she'd been up the night before no patrol. Truth be told, Miss Hecate wasn't a very good guard. She tried..she really did and her abilities were improving, but the siamese colored lioness just didn't excel at being observant.

Hecate was rushing toward the area she was supposed to meet Thoth, nearly in an all out run she did not even notice her sister, or the older slave as she ran past them.

Nerit beamed proudly they were getting very big, and they were learning and growing so much that Nerit was so surprised how they grew.

At the thought of her children procreating the chocolate colored lioness laughed, "Oh, I don't know too much about cubs just yet from any of my brood, maybe. It would be nice to have more grandc-" Nerit's train of thought was cut short by the brown and cream lioness approaching..and then leaving.

"Was that your sister?"

Amalthea was just imagining her sisters or brother having cubs- and the thought delighted her. Surely they had a better chance of reproducing than she did, and she would love to see it! She didn't have to be a mother, she could be an aunt! That would be like how Nerit said- if the cubs got fussy or hard to deal with, you just send them home to mommy. She nodded as Nerit laughed about her other kids not being quite ready for that yet, stifling a laugh of her own-- just when Hecate came zooming by. She stopped and blinked and watched Hecate go.

"I guess that means she's realized she's late."

Nerit thought about calling after the running guard but decided against it, not wanting to make Hecate any later than she is.

"I suppose our work is done here? Not that we had anything to do with Hecate's finding out," Nerit chuckled, "I wonder what kept her so long?"

Nerit continued walking along side Amalthea, she was thinking that it was just about time to go home, time to relax and spend time with Unyezi.

"I'll have to find out," she muttered, watching as Hecate got farther and farther away. There was no way they were catching her at this point, and there was no doubt in Amalthea's mind that she was heading off to work. She shook her head, looking over to Nerit.

"I'll go make sure that she's gone off to her patrol, you can go home if you'd like," she offered. It was her job to do favors, sure, but there was nothing to gain from trying to do Nerit one. She genuinely was just being nice. And she would like going to find Hecate and see what happened.

"If you don't mind," Nerit replied to the other slave's offer. She knew just as much as Amalthea did, that there was nothing to gain from helping another slave, except for being nice. It was good to make friends among your own class and Amalthea had gained a friend in Nerit, if the young lioness needed anything Nerit would help.

"If there's anything I can do for you, let me know," Nerit replied and turned her direction off to the left, "I'll be around."
