Spring; even the sound of it is lovely! Although winter is the season that brings death, spring is the opposite - it brings life! Flowers bloom, birds return home from their migration, hibernating animals wake up and most importantly, fruits and clovers were aplenty! The female salivated at the thought as she looked around the forest at the foot of the mountain, scanning for something to eat as breakfast; throughout winter, all she had for all three meals was tree bark and the occasional winter berries... Those never gave her the energy she needed to keep warm and train! She sighed, wondering if her stamina and strength had decreased.

"Ah!" She exclaimed happily upon spotting some fresh clovers growing by the base of a tree. Quickly, as if afraid that someone might come and snatch it away from her, the young mare galloped to it and tucked in, chewing and savoring the taste before swallowing. As she grabbed her second mouthful of clovers, the female couldn't help thinking about her family; if it was spring, then it meant that she should a year old soon. It almost meant that it had almost been a year since she left home... Brioso paused, wondering how her family was doing; her two siblings should be adults now as well. Who knows? Maybe they're already parents and she's already an aunt! Or maybe her parents decided to give birth to more siblings! She chuckled at the thought before swallowing, giving a contented smile.

One scary and sad thing about being away from family, is that so many things might be happening without you knowing.

Although she had long gotten used to living up in the mountains with its fresh air and chilly winds, sometimes, staring at the plateau that the herd trains on, she couldn't help thinking about the open grass plains of home. After all, she had spent countless hours galloping through the fields, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends and family. Even her first meeting with Grencia, the stallion who agreed to take her into the herd, was in those fields! That was the part of home that she often missed.

"I'll be back one day though," She muttered softly, as if trying to reassure herself, before grabbing even more clovers, "When I'm ready, that is..."

As the sun shined on the small filly trotting up the hills, she smiled and hummed a quick happy tune. It was one she had heard her brother hum and sing once before. It was called...Melissa, if she recalled correctly.
The title had been a close match to her own name, Nerissa, so she had taken a liking to it. He brother, and even her uncle Rockstar, had sang it for her upon request. She did not quite remember the worlds as they were not of the same tongue, but she liked the exotic feel they had nonetheless. Smiling and swaying her head to the melody she trotting along on her way. Her destination was the mountains. She had spied them many days ago and had longed to climb up and reach the peak, to touch the clouds. If she traveled up there, she might even learn how to fly. The idea made her swell up even more with excitement and she dashed forwards. On her way to the base of the mountain, she jumped into a gallop. No longer humming, but speeding. She reached the base, quickly passing a dark mare, and ran up the stone side. Hasty to reach the top.

The young mare chewed slowly, taking time to savor every second the clovers are in her mouth before swallowing. Although she was normally the impatient, hasty sort, Brioso would slow down for two things. The first was, of course, during training as she needed to keep her cool inn order to follow instructions as well as work her stamina. The second was when she was eating; it was never her style to rush meals!

However, when she saw someone rush past her, she quickly swallowed and dash after the fellow, her powerful hind legs giving her a boost; judging from the speed and size, Brioso reasoned that it had to be either a foal or an adult usdia... From the body shape, probably the former. She quickly overshot the figure and proceeded to swing her body in the stranger's path, "Stop! This is Islagiatt territory!"

She knew that Islagiatt was a large herd with a territory ranging from the mountain to the surrounding forests, but there was always the occasional trespasser who didn't know. However, as long as they meant no harm, the guards normally let them through or guide them out... And this foal seemed to have no ill intentions despite the fact that she didn't look lost at all.

"I'm sorry, but a filly like you shouldn't try to climb up this mountain alone although its spring," She frowned slightly, offering an apologetic smile, "It can get pretty dangerous the higher you go." She had experienced climbing all the way up as a filly; being born and raised in the lowlands, she had never experienced such chilly winds and thin air before. She was strong and made it without too many problems, but the climb did exhaust her small body.

Neri's small heart pounded with blood brimming with excitement, he short, but strong, legs rushed up swiftly up the rock face. But the sudden appearance of a dark blue mare in front of her made her skid to a stop. She gritted her teeth, as if it would help slow her speed. But the red filly did come to a stop, finally, almost right in front of the mare's face. Just backed up a little bit, not realizing the this mare was guarding rather than playing. But the news of this being someone's territory made her position clear.
Neri jumped at the assertive tone and bent down low, pressing her ears to her head. Taking a few more steps back, but still holding her ground...in a sense. Her mother had taught her how to spare a little, and how to sound big and get out of fights. But all that information began to hide with this large mare standing over her.
"The Islagiatt herd? Oh I am sorry, I thought it was just a mountain! I didn't know that I was intruding." Nerissa was a bit shaken with her first real encounter with an unfriendly situation. But the apologetic smile of the mare made her blink in surprise. Was she not in trouble? Neri tried to smile back and straighten herself up.
"Dangerous? But I want to go up really high. To the very peek!" Nerissa looked at the cloud shielded tip with longing eyes. "I want to go up there and fly! I will be fine, I am strong!" She assured the other mare and took a step forward quickly returning to her natural self.

Something tugged at Brioso's heart at the foal's frightened expression; in the past, foals were more like playmates than anything, but now that she's older... There's something about them that makes her feel protective. How weird! Giving another smile, she lowered her head to the filly's eye level, "Sorry if I had frightened you, but it would be bad if you were marked as an intruder!" She paused at her explanation before nodding, flashing her a grin, "Well, herd territories aren't exactly marked by a fence, unlike the villages of those two-leggers!"

The mare frowned slightly, however, as the foal continued to speak. Straightening herself up, she glanced briefly at her back; there were no wings, not even flutter ones... You can't fly without wings, Brioso knew that. However, she just didn't know if she should tell that directly... If she waited, the foal might do something silly thinking she could fly, but if she told her now, it might disappoint her.

Perhaps it might be better to let her figure it out herself, but warn her first.

"Well, I could bring you up, but... Without wings, I doubt you will actually fly." She paused before looking up at the mountain, remembering how fascinated she was about it the first time she saw it. She turned her attention back to the foal, "We won't be at the top since that's off limits but I'll bring you as high up as I can? There's a place where you can see a sea of clouds on good days... Like today." She offered with a chuckle, before her tone became more serious, "But you must promise me to always stay within sight and not do anything reckless, like go near the cliffs! A strong gust of wind might knock you off your balance..."

The mare straightened up, giving a grin, "And now that that's over, its nice to meet you! My name is Brioso."

[sorry these took so long D: been in the hospital]
Neri perked up, the name sounded familiar for some reason. As she tried to find out why, she also introduced herself, "Hello, my name is Nerissa! Daughter of Selena and Suichii, its a pleasure!" She giggled. "i would love to go up with you!" She nearly jumped for joy, "And do not worry about my not having wings, once I get up to the peak i will make myself some wings and be able to fly!"
In her mind she could see herself weaving wings of clouds and sunlight, just like in a tale she had heard while still in her basket. Beautiful wings; able to carry even the heaviest cargo, innocent and delicate. And Nerissa would use them to finally fly on her own! And as everyone knew, she was sure, the only way to learn to fly must be by jumping off of somewhere high.
She jumped from hoof to hoof, eager to get a move on this exciting journey.

"Wait... Selena?" Brioso blinked as she stared at the filly in front of her, shaking her head slowly as her eyes widened in disbelief. Then, she looked at the ground, muttering softly under her breath, "Well, it can't be... Right? Then again..." The young mare looked up again, taking another long, hard look at the filly; although her colors did not resemble her old friend and one-day spar buddy, she does remind her of that Selena.

"So... Nerissa, huh? I know your mother!" Brioso grinned at how excited the filly was; it sort of reminded her of herself when she was that age - ready to take on the world, as the elders would say! Chuckling, she gestured for the filly to follow before turning to head back up the mountain, making sure to set a pace that was easy for a filly to follow. At her next comment, however, Brioso frowned slightly as she shook her head, "Well, just remember not to do anything without my permission!"

"You know my mum?" Neri opened her mouth in disbelief. Though something in her memory suddenly rang out, she remember her mother talking about a dark blue mare with silver celestial markings. If Neri recalled correctly, her mother's tone was quite fond when talking about that mare. Was it a story about them sparring?
She took a few steps forward again and nodded. "I promise to listen!" Brioso seemed very nice and fun, "Tell me about how you met my mom on the way up?" She asked with a beaming smile and she kicked a rock impatiently.

"Good! Well, yes, if its the Selena I know," Brioso grinned as she replied, turning to look at the filly as she made her way up the slope, "You do remind me a little of her, attitude-wise! And sure! Of course I will... In fact, I'll be more than happy to!" She paused as she tried to recollect the events of that day, a thoughtful look on her face - it happened a while ago and although it was a fun sparring lesson, her training had kept her busy after and she never got the chance to look for her old friend.

"Well, it was a long time ago... I'm pretty sure it was way before you were born! I had just grew out of being called a filly for a few weeks, although I had been training hard before then, so I was stronger than more mares my age," She chuckled, remembering how weak she used to be as a filly, being the smallest of her siblings, "I thought your mother was torturing a rabbit because she was chasing it around and scaring it, but she was just playing and didn't wish to harm it."

Neri giggled, "I look alot like my dad. My brother is the one who takes after mum the most. He even got the team Rocket scarf!" She stated, a hint of childish envy in her voice. Neri always loved her mother's hat and scarf. They had kept her warm in her basket whenever her mother gave them to her. And something about them exclaimed adventure, mystery and treasure to her. Her mother had many memories attached with the two articles of clothing, Nerissa knew.

"My dad is red, yellow and a bit gray." Neri outstretched a leg to show off the yellow ring, as well as the gray hoof. "While mommy is almost black all over, except for her pretty white mane! She also wears a hat and scarf." She beamed, thinking of her parents. She loved them so.

"Oh were you really strong then? How did you get so strong? Training? With who?" Neri's mouth just let the questions seep out without thought as the two of them walked up the mountain merrily.

"Oh, you have a brother?" The mare smiled fondly, thinking of her own siblings - the ever cautious Thea and the fearless Sol... It had been a long time since she had last seen them; she was sure that they must be adults by now! Turning away from the filly for a second, she wondered if they had changed as much as she had mentality-wise... Probably so. They were foals when she left, after all!

Listening to the filly talk about her family tug at Brioso's heart - her family was the hardest thing she had to leave behind in the pursuit of her own dreams. She often envied the winged Soquili in Islagiatt for being able to cover more distance in a shorter time... After all, if she has wings, she would be able to fly back home once in a while to visit her family and some old friends. Although she had been tempted throughout her training, she knew that traveling back on foot will take up too much precious time.

"I'm really sure that its the same Selena now!" Brioso chuckled with a nod, "And well, I think I was pretty strong... At least stronger than the average mare. I was training in Islagiatt - the herd whose territory you are traveling in now. My mentor was - and still is - a stallion by the name of Ambroise. However, I was young and inexperienced then and lost to your mother in the duel." She paused before flashing a small smile, "I think I put up a good fight though!"

Nerissa began to stare at the mare with huge, awe-filled eyes. She looked down at the ground and beet her hooves into it, trying to make her mark in the territory. "This part is mine now!" She declared happily and flicked her tail glowingly.
She looked up at Brioso again, "Do you think I could train with them? I want to be strong. Like mamma and you! And like daddy! They are all strong, even Rocket!" She looked down with a slight frown. She was stronger than most fillies, and her will was rock solid, but she still felt the urge to improve and become someone her parent's could be proud of. Even though they told her time and time again of their never ending love for her, and their bottom-less pride and joy that she gave them, she could never accept it. It didn't feel earned to small Nerissa.
"Do you think that if I could travel up to the top of the mountain and touch the heavens, it would be enough to be able to become a student with one of the strong teachers?" She asked with big eyes again, curiosity brimming over almost. "I want to become strong, and learn things! Maybe you could be my teacher!"

Brioso chuckled, a smile tugging at her lips at the filly's actions and questions. However, she then shook her head, flashing Nerissa an apologetic smile, "I'm afraid I can't give you an answer... Although I live here for now, I am not an official member of this herd! I'm just like... Hm, well, a long term guest! Perhaps one of Islagiatt's mentors will be able to give you an answer instead!" Of course, she would love to be a real member one day... However, for now, her priority is in finishing her training in order to be able to head home and visit her family.

"For now, maybe you can train with your parents," Brioso continued with a smile, "I'm sure that Selena have a lot to teach you!"

Nerissa's next question, however, caught the mare off guard. She found herself not only surprised, but rather honored as well - however, she knew her answer well... Brioso's expression softened as she lowered herself to be more on the filly's eye level, "I'm sorry, but I myself am still a trainee! It will be difficult for me to be a teacher to you... I am honored that you asked me though! However, you deserve a better, more experienced teacher!"
PostPosted: Sun Jun 06, 2010 7:46 pm

Neri's smile and curiosity feel into a sad frown. "I train with Mummy and Daddy a lot, but I still think learning from teachers I don't know may be more interesting, and I would even learn more! Not only that, but they wouldn't hold back with the really interesting and dangerous moves and techniques the way my parents do." Nari knew it was for her own safety of course, but if she wasn't going to get her face dirty or bloody once in awhile, how would she ever really learn?
"I still think you would be a great teacher! Even if your still learning!" She beamed, her happiness quickly bouncing back. Just like any foal, emotions only lasted a short while, but they were always so exaggerated and innocent.
But Brioso's last statement made Nerissa gape in surprise and wonder. "You really think I deserve a good teacher? Really?" She beamed and her eyes light up like young stars. Now she felt honored, and she basked in joy. "I really want to have some training! And be really strong!"

"Well, its always good to start with the basics," Brioso nodded firmly, knowing that when she first started out, she was asked to do the simplest tasks like running and prancing; thinking back, she grumbled quite a lot as she had expected to do more exciting things. However, now that she had grown and her thinking had matured, she realized how important those basic moves and exercises were. They enabled her to perform more difficult maneuvers later in her training, and helped push her to beyond her limits.

"You need a strong foundation before moving onto the more complicated stuff," The mare smiled, nudging the filly with the tip of her nose playfully, "Just like how a tree with roots that bury deep into the ground will be able to stand upright in a storm while trees with shallow roots will probably fall in that same storm... Take every lesson seriously, and when the time comes, I'm sure your parents will teach you the more complex moves!"

She chuckled, blushing a little at her comment, "Thank you, but I don't know enough to be a teacher yet." She smiled, clearly amused as she continued, "Perhaps in the future, but not now... And yes, I think you deserve better. Someone more experienced, and can coach you properly. You're so eager and ready to learn, so I'm sure you'll grow up strong! Maybe even stronger than your parents one day."
