Name: Andere
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft: Seacraft
Rank: Apprentice/Candidate

History: Andere is the first-born child to a pair of Seacrafters. Her mother remains ashore, running the family trading business as her father captains his vessel and runs goods hither and fro. Six more children were born after herself, all in fairly quick succession, and they were all sons. It was not a problem for the family, because business has been very good and what are children if not free labor?

Once she reached her tenth naming day, Andere was taken aboard the Horizon, her father’s flagship. She was the cabin boy until her oldest brother, Axin, joined the crew, and Andere was asked what she would like to specialize in. She answered navigation without hesitation and has been training under her father’s navigator since. By the time she was eighteen, all six of her brothers were aboard the Horizon, from the youngest cabin boy to her eldest brother training to replace her father as captain when he decides to retire.

It was a good life, as far as Andere was concerned. She gets along well with all her siblings; they are crewmates and depend upon each other to survive. If they don’t get the ship in on time, the trade is lost and supporting the family suddenly becomes about ten times more difficult. It’s only happened once before, but such small meals left a strong impression on each and ever one of the seamen. If they didn’t believe their father’s preaching ‘you reap what you sow’, they certainly did after, perhaps none more than Andere.

Axin has always been her rival, but they are friendly rivals. When Andere fell asleep while on watch for sandbars, Axin made sure they didn’t run abreast. That time Axin accidentally sold their wares for about half of what they were actually worth? Andere gambled it all back. They have each other’s backs, but it’s a secret, so don’t tell anyone, okay?

When Andere was Searched at age twenty while they were at port at Tillek Hold, Axin was naturally the first one she told, and he was the one who told her she ought to give it a try, at any rate. If she Stood and failed to Impress, there was always room back home on the Horizon. That security in mind, Andere rode with the green back to High Reaches to Stand for the first time.

Appearance: Andere is just one of the guys. Her dark mahogany red hair is cut short so she doesn’t have to worry about it in her face, her bangs kept out of her eyes be a bandanna. She dresses just like the rest of the crew, in boots and work clothes suitable for wherever they are sailing. Andere does not own a dress and the only jewelry she wears is a small gold bangle, a gift from her mother. She is a woman, somewhere under all that baggy clothing, but with work to be done, she doesn’t have time for flirting and she has long since forgotten she even has curves.

Personality: Nothing makes Andere happy like good, hard work. If you aren’t sore and tired by the end of the day, then you weren’t very productive now, were you? Being raised on a ship made the woman nothing if not a team player, which means two things. One: If you are in trouble, she will give you a hand without question and expect that you will return the favor should she ever need it. Two: If you want to eat tonight, you had damn well be pulling your weight. As far as Andere can tell, a Weyr is just like a really, really large ship and everyone ought to be pulling their weight along.

She’s always been her father’s little girl (that happens when one is the only daughter), so she never had to compete for his attention. Andere is used to being in the spotlight, and she rather likes it there. She works the best under pressure and often creates situations in which she will ‘sink or swim’. The feeling of victory is such an adrenaline rush, it makes her very competitive. Andere is a very sore loser (so try not to gamble with her unless you’re willing to lose all your marks) and isn’t above losing her temper if it gets her what she wants.

Sore loser aside, Andere’s nature is usually pretty easy-going, as long as everyone is doing there work. As long as it gets done properly, she doesn’t particularly care how it gets done. She isn’t nosy or gossipy; as far as she’s concerned, that’s one good way to ruin a good crew. That being said, she isn’t afraid to confront someone when something goes awry, even if they are older or higher stationed. The good of the ship (or the Weyr, Andere supposes) comes before the good of one, be it herself or someone else, and if the whole is endangered, someone needs to say something. She rarely allows herself to be intimidated and will argue until she’s blue in the face if that’s what it takes to get her point across.

As far as men are concerned, Andere likes them well enough. She has very high standards, making a lifetime commitment a little far-fetched for the woman. However, standards aside, flirting is something Andere never learned how to do. Forget the fact that most of the men her age on the ship were her brothers, if any of the other crewmates even thought about it, Axin and her father would keelhaul them before they got a hand on her! Seduction is the one thing that truly makes Andere uncomfortable and awkward as a fish out of water. Her only true master is the sea. All a women needs is the sea.

Other: Nothing! :]
