Today, Rhys wasn't wearing shoes. He just couldn't see how any pair of shoes on the whole planet could be better than the pair his sister was wearing. They were mostly white, but near the heels sprouted swirly purple clouds that faded as they spread toward the toe. The laces were purple too, a clear, bright shade that reminded the boy of grape candy. Candy shoes. Awesome. Yanya had tried to appease Rhys on the ride over by offering to let him wear the shoes all day, but Yanya's shoes were girl's shoes. Their very definition prohibited him from putting them on, even if both his sister and his father told him it was all right. Well, that was okay. If he couldn't wear the best shoes he had ever seen, he wouldn't wear shoes at all.
In spite of this strange whim - and you'd better believe Sam and Yanya were doing their best to ignore it - Rhys was being perfectly well behaved. He trailed well behind his sister and father, clutching a small shopping bag filled with, coincidentally enough, socks. It wasn't until he smelled what could only be delicious cheeseburgers that he paid attention to how far ahead his family had strayed. Jogging to catch up with Yanya, he tugged at her free hand. "Where're we going?"
She gestured around them with her own shopping bag. "Food court."
Rhys dropped her hand and ran forward to walk next to his father. "Can I get some fries?"

Kayden sighed as he leaned across the table to wipe of the ketchup smeared across Ruri's lips for about the third time. "Seriously, Ruri... can you make sure that the fries actually go IN your mouth this time?" The small boy tilted his head as if what Kayden was saying confused him. "They do though..." Ruri said softly. "Yes, but not before you smear it all over your face..." the seveenteen year old boy rolled his eyes. Taking care of a kid was harder than Kayden had thought, especially a demon/angel kid. The two boys had gone shopping earlier, for ironically enough, shoes for the small child. It didn't help that Ruri's left foot was all demonical and stuff, because none of the shoes could fit him and he kept poking holes into them which Kayden just kind of inconspicuously put back into the shoe boxes after they tried them on Ruri.
So here they were at the food court, after only buying one shoe in a pair of shoes, so the shop owner was left standing there dazed on confused that he still had the leftover shoe and wondering what the hell to do with it. It didn't matter though, seriously, Ruri's left foot could pretty much endure anything since the scales on his foot were pretty much rock solid. It was a miracle how the tiny boy could walk with such a large demon foot thingy...

The fries were taking too long. Yanya and Rhys sat at a table close to where Sam was waiting in line and the boy's eyes remained fixed on his father, silently willing him to move closer to the cashier and getting more irritated by the second. He wiggled.
"I'ma take a walk," he told his sister.
Yanya sighed but nodded. If anyone tried to harm the boy, Sam would take care of them. Her faith in her father remained unwavering, at least at this early stage of her life.
Rhys ducked under several nearby tables, emerging again near Kayden and Ruri. Fries! It was against his nature (both of them, in fact) to take from others, so he simply stopped and looked up at the pair. "Those look good," he said, smiling at the comparatively shiny child. "Are they?"

Ruri tilted his head to the side as he watched a small boy around his age, also a demon/angel like Ruri, emerging from under a nearby table. Kayden nearly jumped out of his seat when he heard the boy's voice, "God, don't sneak up like that! You almost gave me a heart attack!" Kayden exclaimed as he clutched his hand at his loudly beating heart. Though Kayden had almost been frighted out of his skin, Ruri seemed to be interested in the other boy as he watched the boy intently with his eyes.
"Yes, they are good," Ruri said, answering the boy's question,"Do you want one?" Ruri sat in his seat, barely reaching the height of the table and he reached across, picking up the plate, holding it over to Rhys. "I don't mind sharing." Ruri smiled. He looked back over at Kayden who was busy listening to his music, "My daddy probably wouldn't mind either, but it's not like he cares anyways."

"Sorry 'bout that," Rhys said to Kayden, grinning happily. It seemed, however, that the man was busy with his music. Oh well.
"Yeah!" Rhys reached up and took one of the offered fries. "Thanks." This other kid was okay. "I'm waiting for my own fries. I can give you one back when I get them," he assured Ruri. "My dad and me got socks," he said, standing on his naked tiptoes. Was this other spawn sad that his dad didn't care about his fry-gifts? Rhys had a mind to give his new friend some socks as well to cheer him up, but they weren't exactly nearby at the moment.

Kayden continued to sit there with loud rock music blasting from his headphones. Ruri shook his head, "No, it's alright. I have enough fries already. Like a bazillion of them!" Even though there were only about 30 or so in his little tray of fries. "Socks? What do you need socks for?" Ruri had never had to wear socks, so he didn't really know what they were for. The concept of socks and shoes confused him.
"My daddy bought me a shoe. I can only wear a shoe on one foot because my other one rips through the shoes. The shop man person didn't see us rip his shoe though, so my daddy put it back inside the box at the store. I hope the shop man person didn't mind." Ruri hopped off his seat and sat down beside Rhys, "I'm Ruri, that's what my daddy named me. What did your daddy name you?" Ruri tilted his little blonde head to the side, his mass of long golden hair tilted to the side along with his head.

Rhys shrugged. "Dunno. Sometimes my feet get cold. But if the socks're too tall, my leg knives cut 'em. And then I need more." He took a good look at the other boy's inhuman foot. "Cooooool." Then he sat down as well. "My Dad calls me Rhys! So does everyone else! D'you got any brothers or sisters?"

Ruri nodded as if he understood, "Yeah, my feet get cold too. Maybe that's why we need shoes and stuff... leg knives? Do they hurt if you get cut by them?" Ruri tiled his head in curiosity, giggling down at Rhys. Ruri shook his head, smiling, "Nope, I only got me, my daddy, and his mommy and daddy. I don't have any brothers or sisters, but I do have a bunny. His name is Wuzzles and he's brown and very cuddly~" Ruri reached up and patted Rhys' hair, "Your hair is soft... my bunny's fur is a bit like your hair, but less black." Ruri continued his explanation, "So, umm... where is your daddy at?"

"Nah," Rhys said, reaching down to run his thumb over an ankle blade. "They're kinda..." Soft? No, they weren't soft. What was the word he was looking for? He settled on, "...not-sharp. They get caught on things though, like sofas n' socks." He nodded.
"A bunny? Cool!" Rhys didn't have a pet, only a sister. He giggled when Ruri pat his head. Maybe if he asked nicely, Dad would get him a bunny.
"My Da's..." Rhys jumped to his feet and stood on his tiptoes, looking back toward where he had come from. Where was his father? He scanned the tables, searching for Yanya's pale skin and hair. There! "There's my sister," he said, pointing. "I don't see Da." He waved, catching Yanya's eye. She frowned. "Oh no, she's comin' over here."
