The day was cool and dry, and the sun was covered by multiple layers of grayish storm clouds over the mountainous terrain. The wind blew gently over nooks and crannies in the peppered granite stone, rustling the needles of the coniferous pines that grew along the mountains' faces. Nestled within one of these small forests was a stream--and next to that stream, a Kalona with his fresh kill.
Ominos had been successful on his morning hunt, easily managing to kill a small deer. He had drug the fat little creature back to the stream, wishing for a place to quench his thirst if the need be, and also, to wash off the blood. He filled himself with the meat, eating leisurely, until many tiny ribs poked up from the carcass and the bones lay nearly bare. He turned and dipped his muzzle into the stream, watching intently as small little rivulets of red ran off into the clear water. They interested him, the way they snaked along and eventually dissipated into crystal nothingness. However, they did not hold his attention for long, and he turned back towards the dark trees, wandering what lay within.
The day was still young, and he had a feeling that something would soon happen.

Mama was gone. There was nothing she could do about it now. The thought made the wandering filly sad. She didn't understand why her mother had left earlier that morning, mumbling under her breath and looking completely and utterly broken. Little Eir had watched her cry in the early dawn, right when the sun was peaking over the horizon. The filly was sure her mother knew she was there (Eir believed her mommy had a fantastic nose), and was thus perplexed on why she didn't say goodbye.
She shook her head, wanting to dismiss the inscrutable scene in her head, but alas she didn't want to lose mama's image. She tried to console herself with silly words of Lorelei coming back, but for a young one she wasn't stupid - she was Viraj's daughter, for heaven's sake. Whenever Lorelei left, she left some sort of goodbye. And now...
A low growl emanated from her throat. It was soft and nonthreatening. She disliked this feeling. It was why she had walked away from her papa's territory shortly after, not wanting to bother her sister and brother with the news.
Though her thoughts consumed her, the thinning of the tress stopped her in mid-stride. This was the end of her papa's territory. She had never been outside the forest's edge and knew nothing about what lay outside it. Eir swallowed hard and listened to the silence that surrounded her, only to find that besides her racing heart she could hear water.
Water!
A smile graced her lips and she realized at that moment how very thirsty she was. How convenient! However, instead of running out aimlessly, she sidestepped into the shadows of the trees, trying to sneak up on the stream.
Who knew what was laying on the other side of the treeline?

Ominos turned back to the half-eaten deer, regarding the carcass with idle distaste, as if he suddenly resented what he had done. Of course, it was not that he felt guilty for killing the deer--he was a meat eater, and cared not for the life of his prey. But it seemed to him now that he had been careless and messy with the lifeless corpse; blood littered the soft carpet of grass next to the stream, matting the tiny stalks into messy clumps. The bones were broken and disjointed, making the deer look more like a crumpled mass of nothingness than actually having been a real animal. It was a scene that would shoot ice into any normal Soquili's blood, but to him, it was not a nightmare. Just reality--and messiness. Perhaps he should have taken more time to carefully kill and devour the deer--perhaps he would have enjoyed it more. But it was too late, and the moment had passed.
He turned away, disregarding the corpse. No need to trouble himself with idle things. There was much more that he could be doing in the meantime.
He was about to make on his way when a soft, almost undetectable sound came from the trees behind him. His ears pricked forward, and his golden eyes narrowed as he turned to stare into their shadowy depths. He raised his head and sniffed the air, growling when the scent hit his nose.
He was not alone.
He flared his nostrils, hot, meaningless anger filling his chest. His tail whipped out violently behind him, emphasizing his dangerous character.
"I know you're there! Reveal yourself!" he threatened, his voice deep and accented in a German manner. His teeth were bared--he was ready to fight, if the need be. He stared into the trees, searching for a sign that would pinpoint him to the intruder's position and give him advantage. A flash of purple caught his eye... Ah! There.
