The basic premise of Effort Value or EV training is to improve your Pokemon in a specific stat by having it fight enemies proficient in that specific stat. You probably don't notice when you raise a Pokemon normally, but they get stat bonuses upon leveling up in accordance to the amount of Effort Points they have received in a certain stat. For example, a pokemon trained on Graveler and Steelix at Iron Island will have higher Defense, but lower Special Attack, than a Pokemon trained on Gastly and Haunter at Old Chateau.

Pokemon can gain up to 510 Effort Points and 255 in any one stat. The stat bonuses are gained some right away and some over the leveling process, but at level 100, 4 effort points translate into 1 stat point. It is recommended, however, that you try only for 252 points in any one stat, as some trainers believe that having an effort total not divisible by 4 will reduce the stat slightly.

In this guide I will touch on basic techniques, EV-training items, and my favorite places to train.

You Will Need

First, you will need a fresh, EV-less Pokemon. I suggest you breed a baby with a nature that complements your intended stat gains. Here is a list of what each nature raises and lowers. You may EV train a raised Pokemon, but you will probably need to take away unwanted EVs first by feeding them the corresponding stat-lowering Berry (Pomeg, Qualot, etc.)

Next, you need a stat setup in mind. Most trainers recommend a setup of 252 / 252 / 4, leaving 2 effort points unused. There are 2 ways to make sure you reach the ideal number: first, you can keep count. This is a little difficult, especially if you don't do all the training in one sitting, so I suggest you keep a tally on paper. Alternatively, you can train up to 255 and then manipulate EV items to get your desired total. Keep in mind that stat-enhancing items like vitamins add 10 points each and can only be used for the first 100 points in any stat. Second, stat-lowering berries also remove 10 points each and can be used at any time.

Optionally, you can choose to obtain a Macho Brace, or Power Items from the Battle Frontier, to speed up the process. Macho Brace will double the EV points gained from the opponent, while Power items will grant 4 per battle to their corresponding stat:

Power Weight - HP
Power Bracer - Attack
Power Belt - Defense
Power Lens - Sp. Atk
Power Band - Sp. Def
Power Anklet - Speed

Each Power item costs 16 BP each. You get 20 BP for each Frontier Brain you defeat. There is also a rare status condition called Pokerus (PKRS) that will double the amount of EVs gained from opponent Pokemon and from EV-boosting hold items. You can read more about Pokerus here.

Finally, you need a target. The next post will touch on training locations and common Pokemon's EV grants.

How It's Done

Keep in mind that battles that do not grant EXP (such as link battles or Battle Frontier battles) do not grant EVs either. You have to hunt out wild Pokemon or fight on-route Trainers to get these EVs, sorry.

There are two ways to go about EV training your Pokemon. First, you can use the switch method. Simply put the Pokemon you want to train in the first slot and switch out to a stronger Pokemon to kill the opponent. This is a great way to train two Pokemon in the same stat at once, as every Pokemon participating in the battle will get 100% of the opponent's EVs.

As for recommended places to train in R/S/E, try these:

HP - Whismur - Cave on Route 106
Attack - Carvanha - Route 119 (Super Rod)
Defense - Sandshrew/Skarmory - Route 113
Special Attack - Spinda - Route 113
Special Defense - Tentacool - Almost Anywhere you can surf
Speed - Zubat/Golbat - Cave of Origin

As for recommended places to train in D/P/P, try these:

HP - Shellos/Bidoof - Valley Windworks
Attack - Machoke/Bibarel - Route 211 East
Defense - Graveler/Onix - Iron Mountain
Special Attack - Gastly/Haunter - Old Chateau
Special Defense - Tentacool/Tentacruel - Route 220 or anywhere you surf
Speed - Staravia/Pikachu - Trophy Garden

Alternatively (if you are running Gen IV) you can take advantage of the Power Items from the Battle Frontier and train between Twinleaf and Sandgem (Rt 201). The Pokemon on that route grant EVs as follows, so be sure to bring the corresponding Berries to reduce unwanted EVs:

Kricketot (morning/night only) - 1 Defense Point
Bidoof - 1 HP Point
Starly - 1 Speed Point

There are no other normally occuring Pokemon on this route, so it's an ideal place to Power train without getting too many unwanted EVs. This method is my favorite because I find it easier to keep count of gained EVs.

Keep in mind that some Pokemon grant EVs in more than one stat; always research a route/Pokemon before you decide to train on it.
