Anyone who follows me on DA will have already seen these, but I am so in love with them, that I just have to show them off here too. ^_^

Coyote
User Image
Coyote is a grab-bag of wisdom and mischief. Independent and confidant, she doesn't waste time with worry. She can be social and shy, passionate and reserved, teacher and student.

Skunk
User Image
Skunk minds her own business and expects everyone else to do the same. She's very personal and private, but takes life as it comes. Those who take the time to get to know her are rewarded with a true-blue friend with a heart of gold.

Raccoon "It doesn't matter if all that glitters isn't gold. It glitters. That's what's important!"
User Image
Raccoon sees the value in everything and everyone. Sometimes she can be a little jealous, but she can also be very protective. She forms very strong bonds and often friends are pulled into the family before they even realize it.

I have more (older) totems on my DA account. (See signature for address.)

My original intent was to make totem key chains and sell those online. But I can't seem to find the basic materials to make them myself, and having someone else make them is just painful in the pocket book area. So if anyone has any tips let me know.

More Totems:
User Image
Octopus is a shy and reclusive beauty. She is also curious and intelligent, but she keeps many of her discoveries and achievements to herself. She has a talent for blending in to her surroundings, no matter how alien they may be.

User Image
Orca has two sides, dark and light, as stark as her markings. She can be playful and helpful and beautiful. She can be bloodthirsty and vicious and tenacious. Her capacity for compassion is equaled only by her ferocity. Above all else, Orca is fearless, undaunted even by the great white shark.

User Image
Otter is playful and carefree. She loves solving puzzles and problems just as much as she loves goofing off. She puts a great deal of attention into her health and physical appearance, but it always pays off. Her looks can be soft and deceiving, because she can turn into a lithe wrestler if those close to her are threatened.

oh my, i am loving these! biggrin heart

anywho, yeh, i have some tips. ^_^ hurray for wasting over an hour chatting up an SCA Blacksmith at the Medeaval Fair last month! xd

anywho, if you get yerself some casting blocks, and this type of sand that's pretty much made out of the dust from sandpaper, you can make a very usefull and easy-to-use mold. smile

just put a little vegetable oil in it (enough to make it sticky), and hard-pack it into the blocks. you can then press your designed figures into it to make the mold.

now, obviously, you find yourself in a little loop... well, to make the FIRST one, you want to make a wax-investment. this means, that you by wax, and then carve it into your first figure. use it to make your mold, and when you've completed one successful casting, you melt your wax down and then let it cool again. you can repeat it for a surprising amount of times, making new figures over and over.

anywho, pick a material to cast with. apparrently th ebest option is Bronze. you smelt together some Copper and Tin with just a little bit of Iron or Electrum (Electrum, by the way, is yet another alloy. it's a mix of Silver and Gold), depending on how hard or soft you want it. if you want it harder, use Iron, and put more Tin than Copper. if you want it softer, use Electrum and put more Copper than Tin.

it's pretty much as simple as that, but you gotta be carefull about breathing in the fumes, or touching the finished product. you gotta wait th eright aount of time for it to cool off, but you also gotta time it right to get it out of the mold. cool enough that it's hard, but not so cool that it sticks to the sand. and when you get it out it will still be too hot to touch for a few more seconds.

but yeh. that's my little bit of advice, secondhand realy, i'm just a guy that listened to a proffessional and asked questions. sweatdrop

I was actually thinking about the cheep plastic blocks with pictures in them, but that sounds really cool too! ^_^ Not sure I can do a lot of smelting in an apartment building with a 3-year-old. But still, that sounds so nifty. Little bronze castings of my totems would be sooooo awesome!

i'm not sure, but i think it would be cheaper than plastic anyway. smile even if it's not, it's worth the investment, cause you can sell it for a pretty penny. might as well try both though, you could buy paints and hand-paint the plastic ones! ^.^

Now you've got me thinking about bronze charms and pendants and painted sculptures. razz Bad, Twilight, for stimulating my creativity. My hubby just got me off my hand-made soap kick, and now he's going to flip when I tell him I want to start casting bronze in the kitchen. ^_^

>.> what's he got against creativity, and self-sufficiency!? hand-made soap is awesome! especialy that Jamaican stuff, yee! whee

It's not creativity he's against. Its messy, possibly toxic, and certainly costly projects he's not so crazy about.

it's an investment. ._. somebody's gotta do it for it to exist, and why not be the person to do it? it means yer the one making the money for it!

Investment requires capital. Capital is something that is very hard to keep around these days. razz

admittedly true... which is why i like the idea of starting from something i can get for free. xd man, i wait so patiently for that off-the-map community, growing something to sell on a farmer's market is a good way to make money from scratch. whee

So...(covertly gathering inspiration for more totems) What's your totem and why?
PostPosted: Sun Mar 14, 2010 5:00 pm

well, my totem is more of a personal one... a dancing, pregnant, horned hermaphrodite with three eyes, four arms, and a beard. in one hand it has a shield, in another a spear, in another a scythe, and the last hand is open in a native american peace gesture. the palm of that hand has the Elder Futhark Rune, Ansuz (pronounced Ansur, representing Odin, the Norse God of Wisdom). it wears nothing but a garland of white, black and red roses. it is drawn from African, Native American and Hindu influences mostly, with obvious bits of Germanic and Shinto influence.

it's a symbolic figure, used for helping me achieve Gnosis. nothing more than a power-enhancing Idol. it is not representative of any animal, god or spirit.

EDIT: forgot to mention that this Totem has waist-length dreadlocks. whee

Woah...not the answer I was expecting at all... eek

heh... sweatdrop well, that's not to say i don't look to Animal Oracles, and medicine cards (in fact, Shan gave me her own deck of Oracle Medicine Cards, and i have had a habit of finding messages sent to me directly by live animal sightings).

also, i do worship a number of gods, the closest one to me being Mother (that is, the Morrighan). others include Loki, Odin, Shiva, Krishna, Vishnu, Parvati, Ganesh, and the Kami and some Oni, as well as the Fae.

how about you, Frost? what Totem is yours? smile
