Oh hey, I don't ask for critique much around here, do I?

I'd like some critique on my animation assignment. For a class, I had to animate Meeko the raccoon doing a basic headturn at the very least. Being who I am, I decided to do a little more than that.

Being a complete animation n00b, I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. I couldn't ask for critique this week because of midterms, so I'm hoping to get some feedback now and possibly fix them.

Before you throw critique!
- I keyframed the arms, but I didn't in-between them. That means I have yet to actually animate the arms in, so don't worry about it.
- I've never drawn an anthro/furry before. So, apologies if it looks a little off.
- Sorry for the bad camera shots. Someone was messing with the lights as I was shooting the film. Will be better quality when I'm actually done.

I thought for sure it would be a Flash animation since that seems to be common in schools these days... wasn't expecting it to be on paper.

It's difficult to critique since it all happens in 3 seconds. So many frames, so little time... Here's what I think I noticed, though:
-After it turns, the nose gets quite a lot bigger (dunno if that part's yet to be finished?).
-The body shape is less distinct by the end frame.
-On the second half of the turn, one of the ears seems to jump quite a bit... though its head turns faster there, so I'm not sure if the ear is jumping too much or not.
-The chest area fur seems to get longer during the surprise; during the first second of animation, we saw how far down it goes... I think it's fine for it to stretch with its neck, but I don't think it makes sense for it to stretch downwards at the same time.
-Just an observation, but it doesn't seem to have whiskers... but if my vague memory serves, most cartoons I've seen didn't give whiskers to the animals.
-Perhaps the tail should show?
-Maybe the ears could be a bit rounder (on the front views).

The animation is quite smooth. I'm sure I watched it at least 30 times and all I could come up with is this small stuff. Not really sure what else to say, but keep up the good work.

Lol yeah, I could choose to do Flash for my senior project, but being a n00blet freshman, I have to work with pencil, paper, and a light tracing table. XP The old fashioned way! Not that I don't mind, it's actually quite fun.

1. That's probably my fault on the keyframes. I'll keep that in mind.
2. Oh haha, I guess I didn't draw it dark enough in. That won't take long to fix.
3. I was trying to get the ears to drag with the body (since ears are separate appendages, especially on an animal), so it would drift along with the body? I probably didn't do it successfully enough, so I'll have to ask my animation teacher what's up.
4. In animation work, a "stretch" would stretch the volumes as well, including any markings something might have. You could say I exaggerated it to emphasize the surprise.
5. Oh, Meeko doesn't have whisker-whiskers, just tufts of hair on the sides of his cheek. I could post up the model sheets if you want. XD
6. Meeko is at a half-body shot here. Raccoons don't have the same muscles in its tail as say, a squirrel. Therefore, its tail kind of drags on the ground.
7. Once again, I gotta adhere to the model sheet. According to the notes on the sheet, Meeko's eyes are actually rectangular, somewhat rounded off in the middle of it.

Thanks for the critique! I'll fix it up over Spring Break. 3nodding

The closest I get to animation is small GIF stuff. Emoticons and reeeeaaalllyyyy simple stuff with only a few frames. I'm high school we had some sort of animation software on the computer that I animated a driving "truck" for lack of actual automotive design knowledge or real computer drawing skill.

I wish I could animate at your level. Wow.

Well, prior to this class I didn't do much animating either, unless you count being forced to use Windows Movie Maker and throw together some silly stick figure thing. XP

All you really need are the right resources, like books and whatnot, and lots and lots of determination (mostly the latter).

3. If there is any problem, it's a very small one... I'm really not sure if anything's wrong with it.
4. That's a good point. Well, I don't know much about professional animation or terminology or anything of the sort... I personally think it kinda counters the surprise/how it jumps back, though.
5. Ah, lol.
6. Oh, my bad, haha. I don't know much about animals.
7. I said "ears"...? I dunno if you made a typo or if you misread.

Again, looks really good, though.

Lol wow, I must be really out of it. Stupid cold. :<
Sorry, I totally misread "ears" for "eyes." Hmm, I'll ask my teacher what he thinks.

Thanks again!

I'm amazed at how smooth the animation is. I can't think of anything critical to say that hasn't been said already.

I've just done little animated things. I did some hand drawn stuff for French class.

Just work on 24 FPS (frames per second)! It really does make things smoother, although ultimately you have to draw more. >>;
