It was growing rapidly dark when Jianyu finally left the Artisans Path. The patrons were nearly all gone, and the last remaining sellers were folding up their tables, stowing away their supplies, and preparing to turn in for the night. The low hum of music could be heard coming faintly from some of the nearby houses as mothers sang their children to sleep, and the moon was spreading silver light across all of Lunaria.

Jianyu had spent the entire day browsing through the various shops and stalls for new material for his arrows. His day hadn't been entirely unsuccessful, and by the day's end he had managed to find himself a small bag of supplies. Now, as he began walking down the quiet streets of Lunaria towards his home, he began rummaging through his little pouch, eager to start on his project.

However, the night would not be so easy for him. Jianyu felt a tingling sensation on the back of his neck unexpectedly, and he looked up, frowning. He had felt that feeling before, when he was being followed by one of his mother's many bodyguards. But here, in Lunaria, where the nights often turned into something sinister, Jianyu dared not call out to see if it was Haru, his usual bodyguard. Instead, his fingers felt for the bow tied to his back, and he slid the small bag of supplies into his waist pouch.

He was too slow. With a sudden shuffle, an arm slid around Jianyu's neck with a vice-like grip and he was dragged backwards into the shadows.

He had dropped his bow.

With a shout of surprise and annoyance, Jianyu rammed his arm backwards, his elbow connecting with the softer flesh of someone's stomach. He heard a grunt of pain, and then the arm around his neck loosened and Jianyu took his chance, darting out from under his attacker. He darted off, hardly able to see anything but imposing silhouettes as he frantically felt the cobblestone ground for his bow. His fingers met nothing but dust and hard rock, and before he could look further, someone's leg kicked out, catching Jianyu in the stomach. He let out a gasp of pain and rolled sideways, his lungs heaving for air as he struggled to breathe correctly.

"Damn Legion!" hissed an unfamiliar voice, and Jianyu gritted his teeth.

Rolling onto his stomach, Jianyu began to crawl along the cobblestone ground, trying to be as silent as possible in the darkness, create as little movement as he could. He heard scuffling footsteps, muffled curses and Jianyu bit his lip, feeling out for his bow.

"Damn Legion brat, I found him!"

Jianyu pulled his hand back just in time. There was the crack of leather against stone as a heavy boot stomped down just where Jianyu's hand had been seconds earlier. Strong fingers gripped the front of his shirt, yanking him upwards and almost strangling him, but Jianyu kicked out, his foot connecting with his attacker's leg. He heard a hiss of pain and the fingers dropped him. Jianyu scrabbled hastily away, making his way across the dark, shadow-filled street.

"Over there!"

Damn it, Jianyu swore internally. He darted across the corners of the street, ducking automatically when he heard an angry shout and then there was a reverberating crash as something (a clay flowerpot, perhaps?) exploded against the wall just above his head.

Where is my bow?! Jianyu thought frantically, just as the moon resurfaced, moving away from a thick cloud covering.

And then he saw it. His bow.

It was lying a few yards away, just to the left of a small brick fountain. Jianyu heard the shouts of his attackers, and then the moonlight disappeared, leaving them all enshrouded in the darkness once more.

He need to get to his bow before it was stepped on by one of the Nobles, or worse, before it was stolen by one of the Nobles.

Or before he was killed by them, though that wasn't really on Jianyu's mind. He was more concerned about the thin piece of finely cut wood that was about to be crushed under the heavy boots of some radical Nobles determined to have more Legion blood on their hands.

Jianyu heard more scuffling noises, a few more muffled shouts and then when he was certain of his escape route, Jianyu made his move.

Darting out to the center of the street, towards the fountain, he heard a yell of triumph as one of the Nobles leapt towards him. Jianyu ducked down, swinging his leg in a wide arc under his feet, and the Noble collapsed with a groan and a few choice swearwords as he struggled to get back up again. But Jianyu was already gone, leaping over the tiny fountain to slide across the cobblestone on the other side, his fingers grappling along the cool stone walkway for the bow. Almost, where is it, where is it -

There! An immense feeling of relief coursed through Jianyu's veins as his fingers closed around the familiar mahogany wood training bow, and without hesitating a second longer, Jianyu ran, his breath coming out in short, muffled gasps as he fled. He stopped running after a few moments, listening carefully, but there was no sign that his attackers had followed him. Standing outside the gate to his home, Jianyu looked at the bow in his hand and breathed a deep sigh of relief. They hadn't managed to get him, OR his precious bow, and that was all that mattered to him.

Not today, gentlemen, Jianyu thought as he pushed open the gate and walked inside of his home.

Not today.
