User Image He had wanted to stay with that other pack.

There was no doubt about it. He wished to have others near him. Even after opting to go on his own after the "incident" in his birth pack, he still loved fellowship. The life of a loner was not for him, no matter how much he tried to convince himself of such.

He was young, yes, he still had many seasons in his future, if fortune favored him. Even though his first winter alone had been rough, he had survived. He hunted small game on his own and his sturdy, young frame was filling out and fattening up nicely. He was large for his age, strong, too. He could handle himself quite well...

But he still missed having comrades in arms!

He had left the new pack, what was it called? Even now he couldn't recall the name clearly. They had been a nice enough bunch, but it didn't feel right. He had the uncanny urge to go south and west, to stick close to the shores, an area similar to his birth place.

Even now, he wandered, his ears perked and his tail high. He was eager to face the new day and spring was such a beautiful time. It should only get nicer, and warmer, from here on out!

Shagufta was old enough to be away from the den for longer stretches now, without her parents worrying at her. She liked to travel and look at things; while she'd inherited some of her mother's kleptomaniac traits, she really preferred to see things more than have them, the prettier, the more jewel-toned, the better.

So when she saw flashes of royal purple and pyrite gold through the bushy grass, she perked up immediately. How pretty! She scampered to the edge of the brush to get a better look. It was a fellow wolf, probably about her age, but much larger, and not only just because he was a male. She paused before approaching. Mother always warned them away from other wolves -- and father basically agreed with mother on everything -- but one or two were fine. Besides, Shagufta enjoyed talking with other wolves. Even if her mother told horror stories of packs that destroyed the weak and fought amongst themselves, she didn't really believe them.

And she LOVED to talk!

"Hello!" she called to the violet male, stepping toward him, her tail wagging. "I'm Shagufta. What are you doing here?" The name and line of reasoning didn't quite follow, but that was how she talked -- whatever fell into her head first came out her mouth.

His golden tipped ears pricked at the sound of one near. A scamper, then quiet, then approaching. He turned his shaggy head, a grin plastered to his brightly flecked maw, and searched for the one who was approaching. Though her body was streaked with natural browns, creams, and whites, the green was vibrant and he was fairly amused by it. Quite pretty.

Shagufta, interesting name! She seemed one quite ready and willing to talk, so the young male felt inclined to do so as well. It would be uncharacteristic for him to do otherwise! He did love a good gab with others.

"Shagufta, eh? S'a pleasure 'n all t'meet ya. An' just wanderin' is all, my dear. Could ask ya' the same, eh?" His tail raised slightly, as did his head, but he was all around jolly as he greeted her, tail swishing slightly. She seemed nice enough, after all.

"Oh! His eclectic voice matched his patterns. "You have an accent!" How exciting; and he seemed friendly, too. "Where are you from? Is it far away from here?" Shagufta had never wandered more than two days' journey from her family's den, and she was sure she was missing out on a very interesting world.

Then, finally, she (somewhat) remembered her manners. "What's your name?" she asked. It would be best to continue the conversation knowing that essential piece of information. Only after all the questions were out of her did she realize she'd been asked one in return. "Oh, I'm just exploring," she said. "It gets dull, living in the same place all the time."

She wondered if he had a family nearby, and peered into the bushes behind him, as though a troop of richly-pelted wolves would suddenly materialize. Maybe somewhere there was a whole group of wolves who talked funny. But she'd asked enough questions for now, and she'd wait for him to answer before barraging him with me.

He had to hold his maw to keep from laughing, not that he was one to be critical of the way anyone else spoke. He did speak strangely, after all... But her wording and enthusiasm amused him greatly.

"Oi? Me, I'm called Verdauga." He grinned broadly as he followed her gaze. Unfortunately, she would be quite disappointed. He was all alone, his family long and far behind him. What was left of them, at least.

"An I ain't from these parts, m'dear. Further south 'n east, that's me. Lived quite near th' salty water, too. Nothin' like th' nice ol' ocean breeze. Y'ever tasted that before?"

Match a few of her questions with one of his own. He doubted it would stall her for long, as she seemed to be chock full of them. Already, he found the meeting rather interesting.

Shagufta's snout wrinkled -- something she did quite often. How did one taste a breeze? She supposed, if you thought about it, the breeze carried smells and sometimes if you smelled something it was kind of like tasting it (but you couldn't trust that -- flowers smelled amazing but tasted terrible.)

"No," she said, "I guess I never have... why is the water salty there?" She'd never seen the ocean; neither had her mother, and in her mother's mind, if she hadn't seen something, it either didn't exist, wasn't worth looking at, or was dangerous. Therefore Shagufta's life experience was quite limited, but she was so sure there was more out there! Salty water sounded like a good place to start. "Can you eat the water?" she asked. "I know some animals like salt, a lot." Humans certainly did. She knew a lot about humans.

"I ain't fer sure, really, jest is." He tilted his head slightly. Goodness, did she seem to be the comical type. Perhaps all of her questioning might be annoying to others, of that he wasn't too sure, but he certainly found her amusing enough to hold his attention.

"We lived on th' river what emptied into et. It was regular water, I tell ya what. Funny 'ow nature changes from thing ter thing. Ain't a good idear to et it, though. Nasty stuff what can make ya sick if ya swallow too much. Funny fish live in there, though. What kind o' animals like salt a lot?"

His ears flicked and he looked rather curious. Though he may be trying to start his own pack, he still is young and learning from those around him, having little guidance from his former pack.

"Well, um..." She tilted her head to once side to think about it. "Oh! Well, men like salt a lot." Her tail wagged to back her up. "And, um, deer. Sometimes the men will put salt out for the deer, and then they're all in one place so they can hunt them. But..." she leaned in and took on a conspiratorial tone "...if you know where they put the salt sometimes you can get the deer before they do. Men know how to do so many things to do less work!" And her mother knew how to take advantage of all of them.

"So..." She cast around for something else to talk about. If she wasn't talking all the time she didn't know what to do with herself; if a silence stretched for more than a minute she tended to abandon the person she was talking to and wander off. "Why don't you live there anymore?"

Though he feigned only mild interest, truth was he was quite curious about what this equally odd youngster had to tell. Men and deer were fond of salt? Yet he never saw either drinking from the big water... Maybe they didn't like their water to taste like salt, then, but liked salt when it wasn't mixed with water? That sounded reasonable.

"Oi, I'm guessin' s'good ter stick near man, then, err... Well, at least sometimes, eh? T'get the deer. Ah'll have ter remember that trick." He grinned slightly. He had hardly spoken when she was moving on to another subject. Quite the talker!

"Eh, fat lot of louts, them~ Don't need 'em. Ah think ah c'n do better, if ya get my meanin' an' all. Thinkin' 'bout startin' my own pack, once ah find some what wanna join." He winked mischievously, dodging the true reason he originally spurned his former pack, not wanting to recall drowned pups and his mother, who continued following their thick-skulled alpha, even after the flooding incident.

"Yeah, my family can be a draaag, too," she said. She didn't have a pack -- her mother hated the word -- but packs were like families, right? Or they were supposed to be, or something. She loved her family, but they certainly had their faults. Her mom was overprotective, her father had bouts of confusion, and her sister was just so snarky. Shagufta didn't know what she did to make Arina mad at her, but she always seemed to be. Then when Shagufta tried to make it better, it backfired. Yes, she was about ready to move out.

"Oh, your own pack?" She tilted her head to one side with curiosity, but in a far more exaggerated manner than most wolves. "I thought only old wolves started packs!" It wasn't clear where she'd gotten that impression, but it was the one she held. "Wow, what kind of pack is it going to be?"

"Fsssh, y'ain't gotter be old! Ah c'n do what'er ah wanna, see? An ah'm gonna do that." He smirked triumphantly, holding his head and tail high, in a proud manner. He also puffed out his chest, another attempt to look larger. Her interest clearly pleased him and he cleared his throat before speaking.

"S'gonna be a strong pack, iff'n ya get me, but free 's free c'n be! We're gonna be..." He lowered his voice and head slightly as if it were a secret. "Thieves. We're gonna be thieves. An' we're gonna do what we want 'n go where we wanna. Take what'er suits our fancies. S'gonna be amazin~" He certainly had no qualms with talking highly of his dreams, which he was adamant about pursuing, regardless of the obstacles in his path. He had a firm faith in his abilities and was glad to be blessed with a large frame for his age. He knew he would have to scrap now and again int he future and he needed to make sure he was honed and ready for when the times came.

He also made a mental note to learn where the more dangerous packs were situated. He had heard whispers, after all...

She was hooked, for the moment. The problem with the easily impressed is that they can change their minds quickly when new stimulus comes by. There was no promise she would remember a word Verdauga said once he left.

"Oh that's nice," she said--probably not the eloquent affirmation his speech deserved. Her reactions were rarely appropriate, showing excitement for the inconsequential and a mere nod at destiny. But destiny was slow and harder to understand when the immediate present was your oeuvre. "You should always be able to live how you want." She didn't consider that there were wolves who shouldn't be allowed to do so; she'd never met a wolf whose ideals were so contrary to her own that they couldn't occupy the same space, or a wolf who went against his own kind. She certainly felt, as most adolescents, that she could sympathize with those not allowed to do as they wished. Parents -- tell me about it, right?
