I don't know if I'm just old-school, or if the quality of roleplaying has been lost...
But it's really been forever since a roleplay has interested me. No offense to any roleplayers out there, it's just that things are so..different.
When I started roleplaying it was like...reading a book. A book written by different authors, each entry something told from a different character's perspective--and all of the characters were unique. There were no generic character descriptions like "[character name] was abused as a child" or "[character name] ran away from home" Nor were there any of the first person styles of writing like "I glare at you" or "*glares*" instead of "[character name] glared." Can roleplaying as I knew it only be found in super literate roleplays now?
Also...why has cybering increased, as well as all of the vampire/angel vs demon/highschool/magic school roleplays? Is it just that...people aren't willing to roleplay in strange, "new" settings with different plots? I mean, I've participated in a few of these "Generic" roleplays..and it all feels monochromatic to me; the same. They're fun for awhile--but they leave a lingering feeling, like I haven't done anything significant.
I don't mean to offend anyone really..it's just..maah..what happened to roleplaying?

When I RP it's just like reading a book but when people want to change it to much it makes me so mad. I don't like it and I haven't RPed for a while I just started RPing really recently.

cara_fairy Can roleplaying as I knew it only be found in super literate roleplays now? Yes, that's why I joined this guild as well as the Literate Roleplaying Guild (my apologies to the captain of the refuge and anyone else who has a grudge against the LRG for mentioning it). Roleplaying used to not be very popular, simply something fun for people who were already writers. When Gaia became popular (and more myspace.com-ish) it was flooded with people who saw roleplaying and said "Sounds fun! I wanna try!" and so they did and it soon became extremely popular and all these people who rushed in to have fun with it were new to roleplaying so they weren't very good. More experienced writers didn't want to roleplay with them so they roleplayed with eachother. Due to the fact that all of them lacked skill they never advanced. Basically the flood of bad roleplays and roleplayers is because of gaia's increase in popularity. The way I improved my writing skills was through roleplaying (back in elementary school I did roleplay like *looks at you*) and by getting friends who were good roleplayers I was pushed and encouraged to be better at it and to meet their standards and so I eventually did.

No comment on Literate Role Playing Guild other than that guild's management knows very little about what they have and what to do with it. Their claim of being the best role playing guild on Gaia is just plain bullshit they try to pour down everyone's throat. It's quite pathetic really.
Anyways...
Primary reason why role playing on Gaia has been dying over the years is because offsite role playing communities have been soaking up the members that migrate to better role playing sources. It's just the way things are and will only get worse until more guilds start doing their best to maintain a high quality of literate role play writing. It isn't that difficult to string words together into a meaningful sentence that really mirrors your skill as a writer.
I feel for the small guilds that want to strive to become a very literate role playing guild. But like anything on the internet, there is a lot of garbage guilds on Gaia that one has to go through to find a decent active and literate enough guild to role play in.

It's been a long time since I really was excited by a RP either. I am trying to run my own now, with a spin on a 'comfortable" genre . . . but it is slow in starting and I fear it is never going to take off. crying

I feel that the next generation of role players are slowly killing off all but the elite guilds where they cannot access. Unfortunately, this means that the fun guilds have become swamped by an increasing amount of noobs, newbs and trolls. The same for the smaller guilds that just want to get off the ground. The become lost among the s**t that pools up from Barton forums and overflows to the guild searches. I will admit that I am a non-active member of LRPG and am only there to read other peoples posts purely because of the detail and quality. While I am finding some interesting ideas in RPR they quickly die out due to inactivity and that just leaves the dregs. It is this that has been slowly driving out the better members from the role playing community. If anyone has been offended by this, I meant it out of opinion but not malice.

Then teach them. You cannot be a high quality role player when you begin, and they certainly won't learn if no one shows them the ropes.
I had a friend who was AWFUL at roleplay. He did the whole *I glare at you from the dark corner* and *enters to bar* thing, with mile long run on sentences and clawing "Liek dis" grammar. So one day I sat him down and just told him "Roleplay with me." Two years after he's considerably creative, uses punctuation and actually bothers to think about his posts.
If you find the plots boring or non motivational, make yourself a plot that you think would be awesome to try out and be a part of. Structure it with guidelines on what you are expecting from the posts or use a closed plot [from point A to Point B, instead of open outcomes] Make a character application template and discourage the use of demons, vampires or what-have you. Or heck, use natural settings. I've had my share of plain ol' human plots and they've been some of the best I've done.
I do realize that some people just aren't interested in learning, but a few are eager to polish themselves into better writers and those are the people that should matter to you; they'll make a newer gen of players.

My RPs have rules that say that it must be written as if writing a book. Might explain why so few people jump in, but mine also have not so generic themes, Street racing and Gundam are my two main themes

I had started a new roleplay, and no one but one of my friends has joined. x: I'm not sure if it's cuz it's not a good plot or if it's what you're saying, that people are just unwilling to join a "different" roleplay.

I feel the same. I mean, i tried to start a role play a while ago and no one would take because it wasn't complicated or about vampires. *sigh* I miss the good 'ol days

Yeah... I've not been RPing for an long time (about a year...ish) and I do find it hard to up my skills, if anything I'm beginning to get worse again crying .
I own my own guild, and yeah its not perfect and it needs a little bit of work here and there, but it never really took off. I do feel that the main cause of that was the taste the majority of RPers have and the fear to try something newer. Well, to be honest, my RP wasn't ALL that original, but it certainly wasn't at all generic and it just bugs me that I spent all that time on it only to be flooded with requests filled with drivel and trash.
But on the other hand, If no one lets the trash up their skills, they'll stay as trash... So I suppose you have to embrace the crapness and let it grow or we really WILL be stuck with trash forever. blaugh

I mean, I have never joined a rp that needs profiles. I am trying this now and the person is really nice. She is encouraging and I feel welcomed. We need more people like that. people who encourage mistakes and what not

Wow! I never expected to have that much feedback. Thank you for the input, everyone! =3 And I'm also sorry about the mini-rant/deviation/whatever you wish to call this thread. I was just really really curious about what happened to roleplaying. ^^;
It sounds to me like nowadays there are two types of roleplayers: Old school and Mainstream/Band-wagon.
I just hope that roleplays don't deteriorate anymore..so in the words of Giyari, let's "embrace the crap" XD
