Strange how you know inside me
I measure the time and I stand amazed
Strange how I know inside you
My hand is outstretched toward the damp of the haze

And of course I forgive
I've seen how you live
Like a phoenix you rise from the ashes
You pick up the pieces
And the ghosts in the attic
They never quite leave
And of course I forgive
You've seen how I live
I've got darkness and fears to appease
My voices and analogies
Ambitions like ribbons
Worn bright on my sleeve

Strange how we know each other

Strange how I fit into you
There's a distance erased with the greatest of ease
Strange how you fit into me
A gentle warmth filling the deepest of needs

And with each passing day
The stories we say
Draw us tighter into our addiction
Confirm our conviction
That some kind of miracle
Passed on our hands
And how I am sure
Like never before
Of my reasons for defying reason
Embracing the seasons
We dance through the colors
Both followed and led

Strange how we fit each other

Strange how certain the journey
Time unfolds the petals
For our eyes to see
Strange how this journey's hurting
In ways we accept as part of fate's decree

So we just hold on fast
Acknowledge the past
As lessons exquisitely crafted
Painstakingly drafted
To carve us as instruments
That play the music of life
For we don't realize
Our faith in the prize
Unless it's been somehow elusive
How swiftly we choose it
The sacred simplicity
Of you at my side

Tears wetted the fur on his face. Tears of sorrow. Tears of joy. Tears of love, born from this journey - this pilgrimage - the land of his brother. His dear brother. The only connection he had left of his dear, beautiful Mother.

Well, no, that was not quite true. His children - Mawi's and his. They had her in them, too. They had her strength and love for life. They held her colours, some far more than he did. To look at them he could see her there, almost as if she were alive in them. As if she were not truly gone. And the thought brought another tear pooling down across his cheek and, in the same motion, he leaned sideways, seeking to press his head against his loved one's shoulder. His beautiful mate. The female he had chosen to spend his life with. Who he could not live without.

His Mawi Mai.

"I couldn't have done this without you."

And from behind them came a voice, calling out to them. A voice he knew. A voice that tugged at his heart strings. His brother's daughter. His niece. The one who had his mother's name.

"Uncle! Auntie! Wait! Please!"

She was so slight in build, but strong in life, too. It seemed that late Kirjava had passed on her strength as a gift to all her children and, in turn, her children's children.

"Please wait!" And she closed the gap between them, slowing then, trying to catch her breath before speaking again.

Mawi Mai had a few tears falling down her cheeks too. She wasn't as connected toward all of this as Aapep was, however she did in fact love her mate's mother. She looked up to Kirjava when she was alive and not only that but she really loved her mate and seeing him cry made her pretty upset herself. She looked at him as he leaned into her, she licked his forehead before purring her. She enjoyed this adventure it was a interesting thing for her to go on. She had never left the pride before this, and she was happy to head home but she was going to miss this place that she wandered toward with her mate. she was also going to miss the lions here. So all of this was bitter sweet.

She let out a small purr in response to her mate's words before she then nodded. "I'm glad to have you, I'm glad to be here for you." She nodded before she paused at the sound of a little voice.

She turned around with a smile looking at the small cub, nudging her mate and then licking the side of his face. "Hello little one." she said quietly to the cub she was curiously on what was going on but she was going to stop and find out.

He looped his tail around hers, smiling softly towards her, through the tears. But he had no time to respond as the tan coloured female came up behind them, panting and puffing as she caught her breath.

"I something wrong, Kirjava?" It seemed odd to speak the name, but there was much of his mother in this one.

It was true, then, that his late-mother still lived on in those she had left behind.

"I...I didn't want you to go without...without saying a proper goodbye. I mean, I know you said goodbye to everyone but...well...I just wanted to say it alone, too." She smiled up at them.

"Thank you for visiting us...even if it was for a sad reason. I guess...I just wanted to say again that you're always welcome and...and that perhaps someday we can come and see you, too? I'd love to see your home, especially after seeing your dancing, Uncle Aapep. Your home is much different from ours and...and I would feel sad not to see it."

She blinked up at her aunt. "Do you think that would be allowed?"

Mawi Mai glanced at her mate before licking his nose gently. She flicked her tail around a few times before her attention was completely fixed on the younger lioness. She was curious on what the little lioness wanted. She looked at her mate but then looked toward the other lioness. A smile grew on her lips. "Thats really sweet Kirjava." Now that she thought about it, it was a little odd to call the lioness Kirjava and for that matter it was a little odd to hear the name.

She looked at the lioness and a large grin grew on her face. The idea of others visiting her pride and family none the less made mawi swell with happiness. She couldn't help but to feel really excited at the idea, they always didn't have that many visitors. She nodded toward the lioness and chuckled. "Thank you for welcoming us again." She then looked at her mate excitedly. "We would more then welcome you to our lands." She nodded and then pawed at the other lioness, her tail flicking around happily making her shakers rattle.

"It's a friendly pride and we welcome visitors. And since your family you would be more then welcome." She giggled a few times before flicking her hair out of her eyes. "You'd get to meet your cousins." She grinned at the idea all of this was really exiting for her.

"That's right." Aapep added with a smile, glad for this distraction from his grief at the loss of his mother and the leaving of his brother and family. "You are always welcome to visit. Don't forget that, okay? And of course, the invitation is extended to the rest of the family."

He purred. "And we'll be visiting again someday. This place is beautiful and you're the only family I have, other than Mawi and my own children, of course."

"Thank you." She replied softly, folding back her ears and dipping her head in a sign of gratitude.

"Oh, and, also..." She looked back up at them, somewhat shyly. "I have something to give to you. A present for you to remember us by."

Around her neck was a necklace that she had worn since she had been old enough to explore. Attached to the necklace were many trinkets she had collected. Shells, pieces of pebbles with holes worn through them, little tangles of dried weed and sparkling objects that she couldn't put a name to. She selected one of the objects and loosed it from the necklace, holding it out to them.

"It's the first shell I found. Very special. Its difficult to find a coiled shell like that which hasn't been damaged." And she smiled, watching them carefully for a reaction.

Mawi smiled as she noticed her mate coming back to life, or so you could say, she grinned and nodded to her. She really hoped that his mate's family would come and visit, she could teach them how to dance and maybe even make drums. They could celebrate around the drum circle with them and have a great time! The idea of it was wonderful. It filled her mind and it made her smile brightly at the idea. She was caught up in her own thoughts, Mawi had always been easily excited when it came to her music.

She heard the female's voice again and her ears perked up. She glanced at her mate and then nodded motioning toward what the lioness had in her paw. She didn't feel it was her place to take it. But then an idea shot through her head. She looked down at her shakers before slipping one off of her ankle and a smile grew on her face as she offered the lioness it. "And for you to remember us."

He made brief eye contact with his mate, then, with a small nod, accepted the gift. Taking the shell gently in his paw. "Thank you, Kirjava. We'll keep it safe with us, always."

And his smile widened at his mate as she gave a gift of her own. He didn't have any trinkets about his person and was glad that his mate had something to return the gesture with. A good gift, too. He knew Kirjava would love it.

And she did.

Kirjava's eyes widened in surprise and for a moment she was utterly speechless. She sat back on her hind legs so that she might accept the treasure with her forepaws, shaking it gently so that it made that pretty sound.

"Mawi...are you...are you sure?"

Mawi Mai grinned widely, she looked at her mate with the shell in his hand. "I'll have to string that up on a necklace for you when we get home love." She giggled slightly before glancing back at Kirjava. "Thank you very much." She was happy to have met all of the lions in the pride. All of this was an adventure that was worth taking.

She looked at the lionesses paw as she put it on gently, moving it up to the spot where it fit, she would have to grow into it a little bit but it fit well where it was for now. She grinned before she looked up at her. "Of course I'm sure!" She giggled a little bit as she nodded at her. "Beside now you have a reason to visit us." She winked. "If it breaks you can come visit, but I've had it for a long time, It will last you a while." She chuckled before leaning forward and nuzzling Kirjava. She knew she could easily make a similar one when she got home. But she was really gad that she had something to give the lioness in return. Something for her to remember them by as well.

"I suppose a dancer should have some trinkets of his own." He jested lightly, but was touched by the gesture of such a gift. It held no great value as a shell, but sentimental value...it was overflowing. He would guard it well, this treasure from his brother's home. This treasure gifted to him by his niece.

"T-thank you." Kirjava murmured, clutching her newly adorned paw to her chest. "I don't know what else to say."

She purred, leaning into the nuzzle, and then stood, smiling widely as the gift jingled about her paw.

"Thank you, thank you both so much." She dipped her head again. "I won't keep you any longer. Have a safe journey and lets hope to meet again soon!"

The smile on Mawi's face slowly grew into a sad one, she was going to have to say goodbye to the lands and the young lioness. The excitement of the event was slowly starting to fade away because of the realization that they were going to. She looked up at her mate before looking back at her niece. A small purr escaped her throat. "No problem hun." She chuckled slightly before flicking her hair out of her eyes and then moved a little closer to her mate.

"I guess it it about time we left. Thank you Kir once more." She chuckled half heartedly then nodded toward her mate nudging him gently then smiling. "Come on love, our children are probably worring about us." She laughed quietly then nodded at him.

"I suppose it is." Aapep replied. "You take care, too, Kirjava." And, pressing against his mate with a purr, he nodded towards his niece and turned to move off, but not without casting a glance back at the pride that, whilst not home, was a comfort nonetheless.

"Now we are homeward bound." He replied softly.

And, Kirjava, with tears in her eyes, watched the pair fade off into the distance, only returning home when they were gone from sight. But as she went the shaker made its merry music and it was as if they walked with her still.
