It had been a week or two since the Valentine's Day party in which Calintha and Fallon had originally come up with the idea of gardening and cooking lessons. And today was the first Wednesday that they had actually set a date to meet. She had spent her free time before the appointed meeting time to make sure her house was clean and that she had at least some semblance of ingredients in her fridge.

She was dressed comfortably for the occasion, a pair of skinny jeans and a graphic t-shirt under an open cardigan. Calintha figured that she couldn't really under dress for her own home, and wanted to wear something that was practical for both cooking and gardening.

Slightly nervous, the blonde girl sat down at one of her kitchen stools. Calintha didn't even need the clock on the wall to tell her that it was about 10 minutes until their appointed meeting time. She had no doubt that Fallon would arrive on time, since she seemed to have a knack for that kind of thing.

Hopefully tonight would be pleasant for the both of them. She knew that at some point, Barren Pines was going to enter the conversation, and that it was going to be a difficult conversation to swallow. At least, though, she could tell someone else about her dreams and feelings that really understood what she was talking about. Calintha needed that more than anything; her nightmares were becoming so bad that it was difficult to find the courage to close her eyes. Eventually exhaustion won out thankfully, but it was a dreadful occurrence.

Fallon was on time to Calintha's. She was actually a little bit early. Some might not realize, but it was actually just as rude to be too early as it was to be late. So the cinnamon-haired girl made a pit stop and a tea and coffee shop near Calintha's apartment and picked up some clover honey sticks to use in the tea she brought.

When she finally reached the door, small tote-cart filled with food in hand, Fallon was two minutes early. She knocked and waited, adjusting the ribbon at her waist. It was still cold in Destiny City, but Fallon was slowly shifting back to dresses. Her legs were covered by a pair of black opaque tights with equally black heels and a pale salmon dress fell just above her knee. She had only worn a cardigan, not a jacket, and would probably regret that on the walk home.

But Fallon was happy. Why wouldn't she be? She was getting another chance to reconnect with someone who remembered Barren Pines. Those people were few and far between, and Fallon would not deny a chance to talk with any of them -- least of all someone she liked like Calintha.

Calintha had left her door propped open, having remembered the fact that she had forgotten to tell Fallon to ring the buzzer. Hearing the faint but telltale noise, the girl rounded the corner and down the short flight of stairs to the side door. She opened it up smiling, beckoning the other girl inside. "Please, come in. My apartment is just up to the left."

The blonde girl led the way up the stairs and into the apartment. "I'm really glad that you agreed to come over tonight Fallon. Make yourself at home." From this point, she wasn't really sure where to go. Plants first? Food first? Chit-chat? Calintha didn't know enough about these things to take charge.

Though, she had a feeling that Fallon would enjoy her liberal use of labels and organization. Cali had picked up a tip or two from the girl in the hospital and had applied it liberally.

When Calintha appeared, Fallon grinned, hoisting her little cart up the stairs to the girl's apartment. There was something so mature about having your own place. Fallon couldn't wait for the day she took that step, even though it felt far off. Dorms were one thing; an apartment was another. There were some nights when Fallon would stay up late to design a potential future apartment, hypothesizing where it would be and how many square feet she would have to call her own. She'd sketch up schematics and label everything from the bed to the lamp before folding the sketch up and stashing it away with the others. Fallon never threw them away; they were all potential plans.

"It's bigger than I expected," she said, sliding out of her coat and hanging it on the back of a chair. The place was nice, very nice for a high school kid. There were organizational things Fallon would have done differently, but over all, Cali had done a very nice job. Fallon nodded approvingly.

Calintha might not know where to go next, but Fallon did. She knelt by her cart and pulled out a clear casserole dish with some kind of pasta-looking contraption inside. "I hope you like lasagna," she said, crossing to the girl's oven. She started opening drawers at random, pulling out rags. Her fingers traced over the labels on the spice jars, and she shot Cali a grin. It was good to see that the blond had taken a note from her organization.

"I just want to get this started before we do anything," she said, cranking the oven on. It would take a few minutes to preheat, maybe more if it was a crappy oven. Fallon drew one hand to her hip and placed her other hand on the counter, evaluating its cleanliness. "You've done a nice job with this place. Do you like it here?"

"Yea, it was one of the only 1 person apartments near enough to Meadowview to walk, so my mom caved." As Fallon proceeded to take over her kitchen, Calintha felt a little relieved. It was nice to know that the other girl could take charge while she was still getting used to things.

"Lasagna sounds delicious, I can't even remember the last time I had it." Calintha smiled back at Fallon, happy to see her labels were getting noticed. It had become something of a terrible hobby of hers- she'd been labeling almost everything that was practical to be labeled as of late.

"I like the place a lot. The windows let in a lot of light during the day, and the little old Chinese man that runs the Paper lantern drugstore downstairs is really nice." She smiled wryly. Old Mister Kean was an interesting fellow, but he was nice enough. "Though, I must admit its rather lonely, not having a roommate or anything. Otherwise the apartment is great."

Noticing Fallon putting her hand on the counter made her glad that she'd decided to clean extra hard the week before. Pretty much everything had been scrubbed or wiped down. Then again, that was mostly due to Calintha avoiding sleep. "How do you like Crystal?"

Lasagna seemed like an easy thing to cook, but Fallon actually had a hard time with it. She couldn't save a casserole in the middle of cooking it, not like she could with veggies on the grill or seared fillets. Once the ingredients were put together and popped in the oven, that was it. This one looked good -- no burning, no over-merging of layers. She'd watch Calintha's reaction carefully when they started to eat.

"Roommates are overrated," Fallon said, waving a hand dismissively. "You should just have more friends over. When it's just friends, you can always ask them to leave when you need a little quiet time." It had been a blessing of epic proportions when Fallon got placed in an empty room at Crystal Academy. She had been warned that the other bed would not stay empty forever, but it had been two months. Fallon was getting cocky.

Behind her, the oven beeped to signal it had preheated. "Crystal is nice, proper, organized. I'm not as good of a student as some of the other girls. My history teacher hates me. I swear -- she has it out for me. I told her I didn't like learning history on the first day, and she made me go sit in the hallway." A frown crossed her features and she popped the oven open. "The worst part is, she still quizzed me on the information I was in the hallway for. I would've said something, but I don't want to get a reputation at Crystal as a behavior problem." Fallon knew that title all too well. No -- she refused to be a behavior problem.

She laughed a little. "Yea, that may be true." Calintha hadn't particularly though about roommates 'cramping her style' but it was very possible that they would. She didn't like it when other people touched her plants, in particular, which is something that would probably be strange to another person.

"That sounds a little ridiculous, her testing you and all. Sounds like a typical teacher power trip to me." Almost every teacher at Meadowview had power tripped at some point, always thinking that theirs was the most important class. Actually, the only one she couldn't ever recall doing so was her English teacher, Mr. Gordon. "Though, that being said, why don't you like learning history on the first day?" It was a little strange, but she knew that Fallon had her quirks just like everyone else. After you pushed passed some of the weirdness they were actually rather endearing, in a bizarre sort of way.

Fallon popped open the oven and slid the casserole dish inside. It closed shut with a thunk. She stared through the little clear window for a few moments before turning back to Calintha.

Why did she hate history? Fallon wasn't entirely sure. It was always her worst subject, despite her penchant for memorization. Honestly, the trouble she had was with theorizing why things happened. Teachers always wanted that. They wanted essays on reasons that WWII started and on why Pinochet was or was not a monster. What did any of it matter? The past events of history could not be changed. Writing about the massacre in Rwanda would not save any of the lives lost there. Fallon had a hard time devoting so much of her energy to a cause that she considered already lost. What mattered to Fallon was what she could do in the here and now. Looking at the past only illuminated failures, and Fallon was too forward-looking (or rather, present-day obsessed) to give it too much thought.

Of course, that explanation was too long and winding.

"History is frustrating. It's the same things over and over, but with different countries and different names. No one can understand why something happened the way it did and when it did except the people who were directly involved in it." Fallon crossed to a chair and thumbed the back of it. "None of the history I have ever learned has felt personally relevant to me, and so I've never cared about it."

Fallon shrugged, and a swatch of cinnamon hair fell over her shoulder. "But that teacher is a psychopath out to get me. Now -- show me those plants. You know I'm excited to see what you've done in this space." Just like that, Fallon changed the subject and was happy to move on.

Calintha watched as Fallon popped the lasagna into the oven, trying to peek at what it looked like. "That makes sense I guess, though my father always said that those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it. I, however, think more like you do."

At the mention of her plants, Cali motioned for Fallon to follow her into the other room. "Sure thing, this way." While there were plants everywhere in her apartment, the main center of her botany was in the other half of the space.

The workspace took up the entire corner and then some. Shelves were inset into the walls and held various jars in various sizes. Each was labeled and dated separately with ingredients and purposes. The workbench was tiered, 3 of them holding plants in various sizes and pot types. All of the plants were also labeled, and most had one or two post it notes detailing the last time it had been fed, watered, or pruned. The bottom 4th level was dedicated to various tools that made gardening a bit easier, and UV lights were strung up over the top of it. "What do you think?"

Fallon gave one last glanced to the oven and then followed Calintha to the other side of her apartment. When Fallon entered the next room, she stopped to stare wide-eyed. "Wow," she said, crossing to the plants inset into the walls. She worked a slow circle around the set-up, pausing to read the little labels.

A strange aloe plant caught her eye, and she lingered in front of it. Then she turned back to Calintha. "It's great. I'd recommend investing in plastic sleeves where you can insert index cards to update the information. The post-it notes aren't reliable to hold." Fallon reached out a finger and touched one. It fluttered to the floor. If this had been her room and someone else did that, Fallon would have lost her s**t. She stooped to pick it up and tried to stick it back on the pot. It didn't work so well.

"What do you do with all of these? I mean, they're lovely," not that Fallon could truly appreciate them, "but there are so many. Do you sell them?" Some of the plants looked so similar that Fallon assumed they were the same thing. Was Calintha trying to build her own forest?

Calintha had never thought of plastic sleeves and index cards, but that would certainly be a major improvement. "I'd never thought of that, but that would be great. As you can see, the post-it-notes don't always stay as well as they should, particularly when the pots sweat."

She watched carefully as Fallon surveyed her plants. She always thought it was interesting when other people looked at them, particularly all together. The wall of green had a strange effect on people. "I do sell some of them, mostly through online transactions. Though, a few shop keepers around Destiny City know who I am and will occasionally buy the rarer varieties. I also use them as ingredients." She looked rather lovingly at her plants. "The jars to the side contain various medical aids- things for burns, cuts, and scrapes. There is also a tea bush up in the corner for making tea, and several of the spices in the kitchen were hand dried." Plants were very, very useful for those that knew how to use them properly.

Fallon perked up. "Tea? You grow tea? Do you have any... now?" Her eyes searched for the plant, but Fallon didn't know what she was looking for. It was all green to her. She had never had the pleasure of picking her own leaves. It was just another way for her to gain control over her meal. Could Calintha help her do that?

She moved in the direction Calintha had indicated, but still couldn't pick it out. "What variety do you grow?" she asked, glancing back over her shoulder. "I love tea. You should show me how to pick tea. I've never done that." This was a big deal to Fallon. She drank a lot of tea and prided herself on having a variety of culinary experiences. Perhaps Calintha could open the door for her to have a new one.

"Yea, I have several different varieties currently. The tins are in the kitchen- I have two different white varieties, a tin of black and a tin of green." She reached up to the top of her work bench, carefully pulling down a long rectangular pot, about a foot in length and at least half as thick. Trimmed neatly on the inside was what looked like a miniature rectangular hedge.

"Its a Camellia sinensis plant. From it you can make green, white, oolong, and black teas; it just depends on how you cure them and when you pick the leaves." Calintha flicked on the UV lights that surrounded the workbench. "Its still dormant now, but when it gets closer to spring it'll flower and that's when it'll be ready to pick tea from. So in a month or two I'd love to show you how." She smiled, happy that she had chosen something that really interested Fallon. Calintha had a hunch that it would peak her interest and had been happy to find out she was right.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 20, 2010 10:33 am

The little hedge was bright green and immaculately trimmed. Fallon was immediately pleased. "Definitely. I hope you understand that you have just given me permission to show up at your house demanding tea the moment that plant is ready for harvest." She nodded emphatically. Tea was a passion for Fallon and tending her own tea plants could be another fun hobby to add to her growing list.

The shrink would be proud.

Standing in the apartment smiling, Fallon wished that she and Calintha had been closer at Barren Pines. They had a few classes together and saw each other about the halls, but she had little personal conversations with the girl short of, "Do you need to borrow a pencil?" or "Did you understand the history assignment?" But now they had an opportunity to change that. They had come out on the other side of a dark cloud, together.

The lasagna would be done soon, and Fallon began to migrate back toward the kitchen. "Calintha," she said, voice growing serious. "What do you... remember? About Barren Pines." It wasn't an easy question to ask, but Fallon felt compelled to do it. Her shrink got very concerned every time she brought up her old "school" and everyone else just looked at her strangely for even referencing it. But Cali had been there; she would understand.

Calintha laughed as she pushed the hedge a little farther back, making sure that it wouldn't fall or be knocked off of the end of her work bench. She was always overcautious now, as in this cramped space she had bumped over and broken a few pots. It was such a hassle. "You're welcome over anytime; I'll let you know when its ready."

The blonde girl followed willingly into the kitchen area, offering the other girl a seat a the island that stood in the center. The lasagna smelled absolutely delicious, and Calintha was more than excited to eat some. "I know why your asking. Everyone says that it was just an organ trafficking ring." She looked up at Fallon. "But you know as well as I do that its not true. I remember...school. Classes, having a greenhouse. It was lovely, wrought iron decoration and glass. They put it at the end because they thought my plants would scare others." She paused, remembering her gardening teacher. A lovely old woman, always wore a sickening shade of pink. Cali smiled and looked down at her hands.

"We had some classes together. I'd been at Barren Pines a while, but they were accepting new students from the area. Then... well... then things get a little fuzzy." Her brows furrowed a little as she thought. "Something bad happened at school. Some...kid got sick, really sick. He maybe died even? After that, well, I woke up in a hospital bed with not even a third of my classmates." Calintha sighed, and looked over Fallon.

Fallon would understand. She had been there! At least, Cali hoped with her entire heart that she wasn't just making things up like everyone had insisted. "What do you remember?"
