Does your band have sectionals? When? For anything specific? Do y'all try to have a lot of fun at them, or is it all work, no play? Any funny stories to tell?
We have sectionals at my MS in the months before region auditions and the months before UIL every Thursday. Usually we have a ton of fun at them! Me & my best friend Hannah will always make fun of each other & tell each other, "Go crawl in a hole and die!" "Go jump off a cliff and die a slow, painful death!" We were doing this around the first chair trumpet this morning, and he was just like Ooooohhhhkayyyyy, Hayley and Hannah. I will run away now. He does not understand the awesome power of flute spazziness. <3

Sectionals every week! Our band splits up the days. Trumpets one day, flutes the next. What really sucks is that percussion (Im a percussionist) is on Friday.

This year we only had sectionals when needed. So it really depended on your section. we only had sectionals during marching season though.
Last year, weall had a set sectional dy, when we would go in at lunch. During band camp, we decided on these days. Clarients had fridays. Not sure about everybody else, but I know baritones had friday with us. Student staff meetigns were held every tuesday. This was nice, because then you didn't have what my sl this year did, never have a sectional. They are very useful to get soem help with parts.
When we had sectionals last year, they were a mix of work and fun(when everyone showed up). We did have a bit of a problem with a few people never coming.
My favorite sectional was one of the last we had. We were missing two people, so it was just me, the other freshman zack, one senior our sl Sarah, and another senior Megan. Well, Sarah was workign with just us freshman because we were on second and the seniors were on first. Megan was off fingering her part while she waited. Me and Zack played, but we had the scared clarinet sound, so Sarah got kind of mad. "Clarients are branded as wimps. We are not wimpy clarinets. Both of you need to stop playing wimpily and gain some confidence." So Megan turns around laughing. "Is wimpily a word?" "It is now."

We try to be serious but never get a whole lot done. We usually split into sub-sectionals, where talented players work extensively with another member of the section who struggles a lot. (It's usually SL with a freshman, SL with a sophomore, me with a sophomore, and guy who doesn't need help but isn't good enough to help anyone.)

In our marching band, we have sectionals on Monday evenings, which are run by the director's assistants (fancy name for section leaders). Each section rehearses in a different part of the music building. My section (2nd 'nets) always gets stuck in the garage -_-
When I was in youth orchestra, we had occasional sectionals too where special instructors would come in. Woodwinds were always in the jazz room, which was fun because there's all kinds of interesting stuff in there (old marching uniforms and instruments, etc.).

All of the back rooms in out band room have cameras in them, so we have a lot of fun whenever we have sectionals back there. We're still not sure if there are microphones oon the cameras. So one day one of my friends in the flute section said "I wonder if those cameras have microphones. Let's find out." Then she just started listing off every dirty word she could think of. When she was done she just said "Let's see if I get in trouble for that one"

I love to tell my freshmen, "WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE..."
...we did 30 yards of lunges, two ways. ...we did 100 crunches; 50 forward, 25 to the left, 25 to the right. ...they lasted an hour and a half. ...we had to test on our marching music. ...we had to do 75 push-ups. ...we had to do 30 leg-throws; 10 forward, 10 left, 10 right. ...we had to do 6-5s, forward, backward, and sliding, at 180 bpm. ...we had to run a lap for every minute we were late.
And this was all for just the flute section that year. And we all seemed to enjoy going. It was great! :] The section leaders all planned the days (there were three days we could attend, and we had to go to one each week), and it was all on their own.
The best quote? From one of our males my freshmen year, in response to the drill form. "Good things have curves! *curvey hand motion*" Guess he didn't realize he was in a group of mostly girls. razz
Last year, our SL had one music sectional, but that's because she was SO busy with other activities. This year, as SL, I tried to get sectionals together, but it was only me, another junior, and two freshmen out of our 15 flutes. sad
