Roni wasn't as easy to find as Fellendar had initially predicted. As it turned out, she was not the only shy girl Standing as a candidate (never mind in the entire Weyr). There was nothing about her that was particularly outstanding, besides being shy. The problem with trying to find someone who wasn't particularly outgoing was the general lack of knowledge to her whereabouts. Perhaps she just didn't want to be found? The Harper snorted indignantly and tossed his head. Who wouldn't want to hang out with him?
The former Harper, undaunted, decided he would search High Reaches top to bottom if so necessary. (He really hoped it wasn't...that sounded like more work than weeding out tunnelsnakes!)
Fellendar got lucky, however. His third stop was the firestone sacking and, lo and behold, there was his target. Unable to wipe the victorious smirk off his face, he trotted over, dodging the other candidates saddled with the sorry task. "Roni!" he crowed, close enough to pounce if the younger girl should try to escape. "I was starting to think you were avoiding me! I have an adventure for us all lined up, alright? Firestone time is over!" He grinned a little harder and bent over, wrapping his arms around Roni's waist in a poor attempt to hoist her over his shoulder. The Harper grunted, clearly not used to physical exertion, and staggered a little.
"And away we go!"

Roni had been sacking firestone. She'd been doing so diligently, but with excessive care, which made her slower than the other candidates. She kept glancing around to see if she was doing it the same as the others. She didn't want to get it wrong and cause some dragon to choke. That'd be just like her. She was quite involved in that process when Fell arrived. It was clear that she was happy to see him, her smile took up half her face. But before she could react, he'd already grabbed her.
Meep! Meep, meep, meep! Roni kicked, yelped, realized she might hurt Fell, stopped kicking, yelped, and began to giggle. "Don't drop me! I. Don't." Giggle! "Drop me." The nerves were there, but she trusted Fell. Fell wouldn't hurt her. And he'd come to find her. Because he was nice and he liked her and that was great. "I was doing firestone." Meep! "I'm supposed to do firestone!"

"I won't drop you," Fellendar crooned, trying his best to mask the grunts and groans as he wobbled away from the small group of candidates, ignoring the looks he was being fixed with. Some, clearly those that didn't know him very well, just gawked as he kidnapped one of their comrades. The others just looked disgruntled, but it was very hard to talk Fell out of anything he actually wanted, so forward the youth marched. He barely made it out of eyesight before his knees started to buckle, and as quickly as he'd lifted Roni, he collapsed a shoulder and slid her down, trying to disguise his panting with a little cough.
"So, I have something that is way more important than sacking firestone. I mean, Thread isn't even falling." Ignoring the tiny voice in the back of his head charging him with blasphemy, he waved his hands to the side in a manner of speaking clearly unfinessed and unable to interpret by anyone else. It took him a moment, but eventually the candidate realized he needed to express his thoughts with words (and it should become immediately clear why the poor lad had no future as a Harper). "We're going flit hunting! You wanted to fly, and obviously you can't fly on a fire lizard. But it is sort of close. Sort of?"
Fellendar shrugged, nothing but good nature. "Come on, then. Much more useful than firestone!"

If Roni noticed that Fell put her down rather abruptly, she was tactful enough not to say anything. And, as Roni was far from the Senior Queen Rider of Tact Weyr, one could assume she probably hadn't noticed. She settled with one more tiny squeak startled into stumbling a bit before settling back into place. Glancing back toward the firestone sacks, she looked as if she might protest again.
But then Fell said the word 'Flit' and all her objections suddenly felt weak and silly. Surely it was important to go flit hunting. Because the little eggs needed looking after. Everyone said the wild flits, the greens especially, were bad at it. So if they found them, they'd be doing a good thing, right?
"But--" she attempted, nonetheless. Another anxious glance at the chore she'd left behind. She nibbled at her lip and gave a little huffing sigh which did little to disguise her growing excitement. "I guess. A lot of people had firestone. No one's doing flits. Looking for them. So. Someone should? Us?"
And then, just as quickly as she'd given in, anxiety struck and Roni, who'd been doing a surprisingly good job of looking Fell in the face without her usual shy posture, began staring back at her feet. "But. I haven't done it. Hunted them. I might do it wrong. Mess up. You might do better, without me. With someone else. Who knows how."

As soon as Roni started to doubt Fell's plan, the young man grabbed her by the arm and began to walk, lest the other candidate start to back out on him. "It's really hard to mess up finding eggs," he replied, "because it's not like we need to catch them. We just need to find them, and the thing is, green firelizards are stupid." He glanced back at his comrade with a toothy grin, releasing her arm once they'd made it a sufficient distance from the others sacking firestone. "And if I went without you, I'd get nothing done, so you're coming with me. End of story."
That decided, Fell continued forward, waving his hand. Clearly expecting Roni to follow behind, the former Harper decided they should try some of the ledges first. Firelizards sunned themselves like dragons, right? "Okay, so I'm thinking we need to check the warmest place we can think of. Which is either near the lake or the perches." He hesitated, running a hand through his thick black hair before glancing over his shoulder at his follower. "I am not entirely sure how we'd make it up to the perches though," Fellendar admitted, narrowing his eyes as he pondered this quandary.
"Suggestions?" he asked, immediately realizing this may have been a mistake.

Roni allowed herself to be pulled, scampering beside Fell with anxious little double steps. There was some eagerness there too, buried beneath the worry. Having a firelizard was like having a tiny, not terrifying dragon. That was an idea she could certainly warm to. Beyond that, she liked being with Fell better than sacking firestone. It wasn't the chore she hated, but the other candidates, clustered and talking and being strangers. She was pretty sure they hated her already.
But Fell didn't. He'd said so!
And now. Now she had to climb to the ledges. And she wanted very much to do so, because then Fell would be happy and approve of her and smile and that would be good. And there would be eggs, which they would share, and she'd tell her brother, and he'd tell Dad. And--
Wait. Ledge.
Right. She could do this. Without even bothering to make a suggestion to Fell, Roni pulled away from him, and rushed to the wall beneath the nearest ledge. She immediately proceeded to attempt to scamper upward, making it all of a foot above the ground before losing her grip on the sheerer rocks above and falling on her butt.
From her new prone position, she stared up at Fell, her lower lip protruding dangerously. "I don't-- I don't-- I can't. They're too steep. I'm sorry."

Mouth agape (he would later claim that he was just opening his mouth to warn Roni), the black-haired youth watched his companion scuttle away from his side, practically unprompted, and attempt to scale a wall. Raising a hand to stifle his chuckle, Fell shook his head and inhaled deeply, grin spreading from his lips to his eyes, something sparkling deep in his chocolate eyes. "It's okay, kiddo," he replied, shaking his head as he choked on a laugh. "It's okay. I think the ledges are for dragons anyways."
He jumped into a trot, jogging over and offering Roni a hand. Once she was back on her feet, he ruffled her hair (a custom he was growing fond of rather quickly) and turned to peer out at the lake. "You know, I reckon that's our only other option. I'm not sure either of us could reach any-" He frowned, hands on his hips as he glanced sideways. One could all be see the gears turning.
"What if I put you on my shoulders. You check the ledges you can see, and then if there's nothing, we'll go check the lake. But we need to at least make an effort!" And with nothing else to say, he bent down and offered his shoulders for Roni. "Who knows? Maybe we'll get lucky!"

The tears threatening in Roni's eyes retreated under Fell's reassurances, and she even managed a small, hopeful smile when he ruffled her hair. She was still a little sore, both in pride and in body, but mostly she was just relieved that Fell hadn't laughed at her. Or worse still gotten angry. Climbing was apparently harder than she'd thought. Lots of things were. She was learning that.
At the suggestion that she climb up on Fell's shoulders, she looked more than a little dubious. Sure he'd promised not to drop her, but. But. But. "Umm." She eyed him, not even sure how to proceed. She'd never ridden on someone's shoulders before! It seemed like a dangerous way to get around. "Well. Yes. I guess. That'd be better? If I could see. The low ledges, at least. Right?"
And, as with the wall, having decided, she rushed to comply. Sometimes it was dangerous to spend too much time thinking about things. She managed to get settled on Fell's shoulders with only a minimum of kicking and possible injury, but she seemed unsure of how to hold on, grabbing nervously at his hair, realizing that was a bad idea, and knotting her fingers together instead. She just knew she was going to fall!

Managing to withhold any grunts as Roni clambered up onto his back, Fellendar stood slowly, grabbing his companion's shins in a feeble attempt to keep her balanced. Of course, the younger candidate grabbed him by the hair, which really didn't help much. Fell stumbled a few steps backwards, cringing as he tried to keep himself from whimpering. He heaved a sigh of relief when the younger candidate released her grip and the former Harper was able to move forward again, taking careful steps to keep from rattling Roni any further.
Once they were all but on top of the sheer rocks, Fell stood up on the very tips of his toes. "Do you see anything?" he asked, silently hoping some silly firelizard actually left some eggs upon the lowest outcroppings. "They're round, fairly small, and sometimes they're rather colorful. They might be hidden a little, some flits are smarter than others, so see if you can move any rocks around or something."
The black-haired youth made another soft noise, shuffling his feet and jostling Roni a little as he tried to arrange her weight more evenly over his shoulders. She wasn't really that heavy, Fellendar just wasn't that 'do physical labor' kind of guy. Of course, he'd never admit it, not ever, but the youth was praying silently she found something and got off quickly, lest he collapse in an undignified heap.

Roni did her best to hold still, falling into a frozen sort of motionlessness at odds with her usual frantic and confused energy. She didn't want to fall, and this new position felt a lot less stable then the earlier, over the shoulder arrangement. Still, other than a few nervous little squeaks, she managed not to object, and she kept her hands away from poor Fell's hair.
Leaning carefully, carefully over the lip of the ledge, she peered around at the abundance of rock and rock like objects. Her reach wasn't great but she had a pretty good view of things and though she didn't want to she managed to lean a bit to peek around some of the larger outcroppings.
And there, just there, something bright caught her eye. An incongruous flash of purple among the gray and brown. "Egg!" She clapped her hands in glee as she spotted it, forgetting her fear and wiggling excitedly in her precarious seat. Poor Fell was probably learning exactly how angular and bony little Roni was. There wasn't much cushion to her. That much was clear.
"There's one! An egg. I see it! I see one!" Leaning forward in a frantic attempt to grab it she immediately realized how far beyond her fingertips it was. "I can't. It's too far. I can see it but it's too far! Fell, what do I do?"

This time, Fell was unable to bridle groan as he staggered under Roni's ever shifting weight. "An egg?" he wheezed, trying his best to ignore the little tremble crawling its way from his knees to his torso. He could hold her long enough to reach it. Surely, he could hold this wee little girl long enough to grab the-
Shaffit!
Fellendar whimpered, swaying a bit before stumbling forward. "Roni," he croaked, hoping he didn't sound quite as pathetic as he was feeling in this very moment, "stand on my shoulders and jump, okay? Get the egg and I'll help you get back down."
Honestly, it was amazing his brain was still functioning at all, between holding his breath and counting backwards from ten, there shouldn't be room for any higher thought in there. Perhaps training with the Harpers had paid off a little after all. Then his knees started to give again and oh, oh! That was close, that was far too close. Perhaps being a Harper wasn't that beneficial after all, but in either case, he needed to get the candidate off his shoulders right now.
"Hurry!" he whined, already wondering how he'd explain his collapse to the girl.

Now, no one could say that Roni didn't adore Fell. Indeed, it would be a cruel person that implied she wasn't trying very hard to impress him. But even Roni, with all her anxiety and desire to please, was not going to stand up on Fell's shoulders and jump. She would die. Plain and simple. She knew it to be true.
Luckily, though she was only just able to peak over the ledge and had extremely limit reach, she could peak, and she did have reach. She managed to get her hand around a (hopefully) well anchored rock, and pulling with all her might squirm her way up onto the ledge, pushing back against poor Fell for leverage. It was not easy, and she certainly wasn't quick about it, though she was at least supporting much of her own weight.
When she finally made it all the way up onto the ledge, she collapsed there, laying on her back and gasping while she attempted to regain her strength. Fell might just have the time to recover before she noticed, as it took her awhile to regain her feet.
"I. I see it. It's purple. I'm going to get it. For you." She very much wanted a firelizard of her own but Fell was the priority here, no question. "I... Oh! There's two! There's two, Fell! I'll get them. That's okay? They won't break will they?"

He was going to die.
Yes, he was definitely dying, Fell thought, sprawled across the ground as he panted and tried to figure out which way was up.
Ultimately, the important thing was that Roni got up there unharmed and she got the eggs, but still. Fellendar was fairly certain he was never putting anyone on his shoulders ever again. After a moment of regrouping, he struggled to his feet and brushed the dust off, leaning up to try to get a glimpse of his friend. "Two? Two, you say? Why, Roni, we must be the luckiest egg hunters this side of High Reaches!" he exclaimed, mega-watt grin fixed back in place. "Yes, yes, you go and get them, it will be find as long as you're gentle."
The candidate pressed himself to the rock face as closely as he could, standing on the very tips of his toes. Pushing black hair away from his eyes, Fellendar couldn't see much beyond the top of his fellow candidate's head, the ledge a little to high for a clear observation. "Once you have them, bring them over here. I will help you down, okay. I'll catch you. Promise!"

Standing on the ledge made her nervous, walking more so. It seemed best not to think about getting back down. Roni was pretty sure that she'd die in the attempt. It wasn't that she didn't trust Fell to catch her. She just trusted herself to mess up even more. This had been a bad idea, and she was perfectly willing to regret it now that it was to late to turn back.
On the other hand, firelizard eggs! Two of them. One a greenish blue and the other a brighter purple, so bright she'd been able to spot it from atop Fell's shoulders. Taking little shuffling steps, she made her way over to the two eggs, peaking around for more without success. Still, two was a lot more than she'd expected to find. Certainly more than she'd expected to fine while sacking firestone. Fell sure had a way of making days more interesting. She'd even gotten to see the hatching sands with him! Now if she could only avoid dying, today would be a good day.
"I'm getting them." She called down, as she carefully, oh so slowly, gently, nervously, nail bitingly picked up the two eggs, cradling their shells in her tiny hands and holding them against her chest. Kneeling down at the edge of the ledge, she peeked down at Fell. "Here. I brought them. I was careful. So careful. They're warm. Pretty."
With some fear born reluctance, she extended her arm over the side, so that Fell could take the eggs from her. "We did it!"

Fellendar whooped and hollered, bouncing around where he stood as his partner in crime retrieved the eggs. Honestly, the candidate had not expected to find anything, never mind two colorful little eggs. He just wanted an excuse to play outside and kidnap Roni again, but if today was going to reward each of them with a firelizard? He certainly wasn't going to turn his nose up at it! "You did it, Roni! Good job!" he cried, finished his little victory dance as he approached the ledge again.
Reaching up carefully, he took the eggs from Roni's hands, cradling them carefully as he glanced around for somewhere to put them. He was going to need all his attention to get his fellow candidate down and it would be rather upsetting if he crushed their eggs in the process, wouldn't it? Chewing on his bottom lip, Fellendar quickly decided to rest them against the face of the rock just a few steps away. Out of the way from his stomping feet, he could still see them and make sure no one else snatched their prize.
Eggs carefully tucked into the ground, Fell returned to Roni and extended his hands. "Okay," the former Harper called, "I'm ready. You can come on down, Roni."
