I was in band in college for three years and it all depends on what school you go to. The music will be hard and more complicated because you are trying to improve your skills and technique by playing harder music. You might even march on the field at a football game and play easy music for a halftime show or for pregame. All I can say college band is really fun and you meet new people and play some really great music (not all the time though).
I hope this helps you ^_^

All my friends that joined college bands hated their lives. To them it was boring and not really honing their skills. many just went to drumcorps instead

I'm in college marching band and I really enjoy it, though I was never in a competitive high school marching band so I can't compare to that.
I don't think it's that much harder than high school band, just faster-paced. We learn a new halftime show for each home game and have to memorize a lot of music. The good thing about joining band though is that you will have some friends at your school before classes start, because of band camp. smile
Of course, it will depend a lot on the school as mentioned above. Schools that put a lot of emphasis on football will probably have a larger/more competitive band.

I'm only a high school junior, but my college friends (and my boyfriend) have all told me that college band is a LOT more fun. Football games, shows, the instructors, and the people - it's all pretty fun. I'm hoping to be in one too. :]

I'm a freshman in college, already did first semester marching band, and it was absolutely fantastic. I'm not sure what your local college would be like, but ours is tons of fun. Intense, but fun.
It's a lot more fast-paced than high school, since the entire band is meeting fewer days a week, and the first game comes up pretty quickly. My college marching band had an entire week in the summer, for about 14 hrs each day, learning music, drill, sectionals, and marching.
Our first show was a 2009 show with Lovegame, Panic Switch, and a few other songs that I can't remember right now, and that one was fun, but my top favorite show of all was the Michael Jackson show (No, it wasn't chosen as a tribute; our instructor had chosen it even before he died). We played Beat It, Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, and Thriller. Yes, there was a dance that went along with that, and it was amazing. The crowd loved it.
Practice is intense, but it's all worth it when you get out there on the field on game day and the crowd cheers you on.
