The Essence of Evil

PostPosted: Fri Dec 23, 2005 8:45 pm

Have you noticed that many of the people in the teenage generation now who fit the hippie idealology the most are kids in the punk/metal/goth crowd.

We have this head shop in my town- Starship, which was a total hippie shop. They still sell "novelty" bongs and s**t. Anyways, the only people who shop there now are either old stoners or metalheads/punks/goths.

Ironic considering Hippies are usually about positive vibes. Although the thing each of these subcultures have in mind is open-mindedness and ******** the mainstream (even if not in those words).

Also, one of my friends and I are both pretty much hippies, but he's a metalhead and I'm a goth (no, I'm not even one of those Mansonite posers either!).

Do you think this could work?
Are you glad the subcultures are finally getting along?
Do you understand this?

That reminds me of the episode of South Park, with the Hippie Jamfest. They scare away the hippies by playing a Slayer CD, because hippies can't stand death metal. "this music is so angry, it's killing my buzz". xd

But, you're right. Most hippies nowadays have more diverse musical tastes. I know a guy who's favorite band besides Phish is Opeth. And I have another hippie friend who is into hip-hop.

Maybe it's because more styles are avaiable now then there were in the 60's, so people have a lot more options and can be more open-minded.

I think I remember that episode. xD

I don't shop in the malls much nor do I pay much attention to "scenes" unless it's right over there in my line of sight. So I couldn't really say for sure who's going where or what's going on with different groups of cliqued people. o:

I don't really cornerhole myself. "Hippie" is just an aspect of the essence of "me". I'm not full-out hippie, nor anything else; the only full thing I am is "me". I think for me that's more of a reluctance to submit to things like that. xD
When people ask what I am, I'll most likely say a student, or a friend, or a daughter, or ect. The various roles I play. What I am in other senses I guess is up for interpretation. (:

About the different people in the hippie scene then, from my viewpoint, is that I don't really think that people are changing what hippie is, but that a vast different sorts of people are adopting aspects of "hippie" into themselves and expanding in that sense. If. . . that makes sense. O:

Yeah, "hippie" isn't really a clique, it's more of a way of life.

A lot of peole now like to define a hippie as someone that listens to a lot of old rock and wears tie-dye shirt. I've got a friend at my school thats like a total goth and he carves words into himself (yes, this is the catholic seminary) and listents to things like the beatles and polyphonic spree, but doesn't fit the hippie image.

Hell, I'm dating a complete punk, and we're like opposite people, but its like a yin and yang thing thats starting to take shape between the different groups.

I think the diverse musical taste is a result of the messages the music has. In the '60's hippie rock focused on love and acceptance. Modern punk/metal/goth also focuses on acceptence and expression, but in completely different ways.

if i get what you're say then i agree.....like i don't think that you have to like a band like phish to be a hippy you can like other types of music too......but it's also not just reserved for music. you don't have to talk or dress like a hippy....i guess what i'm saying is it's more of a state of mind than anything else........

It's good that metal heads are getting along with goths. 3nodding Instead of calling eachother freaks they all hang out behind the library doing who knows what in peace. mrgreen

Idead. Back when the subcultures started- they hated each other, but it seems like they realized they were all after the same thing- just in different ways.

<333

Who you are is not how you dress, the words you say, or the music you listen to; it's your actions and ideas that define you as a person.

Genres and cliques are just a gathering of like-minded people with some same interests.

I really like that the way you say it you almost sound like you're talking about religion... They really are all after the same thing. Except, I don't think they're all done hating each other yet. cry
