Pseudoinnocence Yesterday in Cinema as Lit our class was having a discussion about how the movies we watch, the people on TV, et cetera, influence what we do. The cars we drive, the clothes we buy, everything. One of those things was makeup. Before movies, makeup was worn by two groups of people. Prostitutes and Broadway actors and actresses. Because of Max Factor (Gasp, maybe the brand of your mascara!) women began to wear makeup. Before the revolution in Russia, he was a hair designer for the royal family. Once their heads were cut off, and he was obviously out of a job, he came to America. He opened up a barber shop and advised the people who came to him if they did such and such the blemish wouldn't show. After a while, he was advised to work on Broadway doing makeup and such. After a while, when moving pictures were on their way to becoming famous , the actors and actresses didn't look very good on the low-quality film, so he went and did makeup for them. When the movies got very big, he began to sell his makeup and lured in customers by saying they could look like their favorite actress. So that's how makeup started becoming popular. But, I wear makeup, but I am nowhere near interested in looking like the actresses. I wear it because I like how it looks, although I could go a week without any. Some people refuse to go out in public without makeup on. I have always wondered why. So why, girls, do you choose to wear makeup? Additions: Yeah, guys wear makeup too. Usually as stage makeup or because they want to make a statement. A guy who doesn't wear makeup isn't looked at strangely in society such as a lot of women are. I didn't include guys because I don't know a lot of them who do. I'm not trying to be sexist, I'm just going for a female opinion here.

I wear makeup because I like to make my features stand out, like my green eyes but also to cover up flaws. I have a few scars from the chicken pox and a few bad zits but generally my face is clear.
Because I'm so pale (see my pics in the pic thread), finding the right foundation is hard so sometimes I just cover my blotches and go with barely any at all.
Also, for guys, I don't think makeup looks too good especially if they have a beard. It's harder to make it smooth and I know this from helping with stage makeup.

I don't wear makeup.
And I'm ******** sexy.
The reason is because make up is for people who need to stand out...and I already do. I have good coloring, and I would never want to cover up the beaty of my skin and make my eyes all thick and cakey.
Plus, make up does shitty things to your skin, and the chemicals, when worn over a long period of time, can actually degrade the quality of your skin, making it NECESSARY for you to wear make up every day.
Personally, I think that most people who wear it don't need make up. Maybe, however, it is like a mask to put on, to help a person act in ways that they never would act otherwise....The few times I've worn makeup, I always felt like I was some kind of glass prostitute.

Most of the girls I know do not choose to wear makeup; in the majority of the cases, because they find the effort a waste of time that offers at best minimal benefit; clothing and hairdo tend to be a lot more important in one's overall look by their belief (and one I agree with). The only times they make exceptions (besides stage makeup - and you need lots of it in most cases - is the occasional lip gloss and the like. And even the guys need lip balms (plain beeswax for most - I use watermelon Smirnoff lip balm myself XD ) as an anti-severe-pain measure up here in Alaska, so that's not too big a case.

See, I dont wear make-up on a regular basis, but on certain things, like dances (been a while) and public shows (improv of theatre mostly in highschool, not anymore), weargin make up is in character and you want to appear good for the crowd.
I dont really need make-up, since Ima hawt beast, but sometime it just fits the situation.

Anyways, most of the girls I know only powder lightly and use lipstick, that's it. I think people that don't or won't go out without it need some degree of help...

Actually, a lot of makeup used today is enriched and helps condition the skin or helps with Tzone oiliness. Of course, don't sleep with it on, you need to let your pores breath but not doing anything to your skin can be just as damaging. I have always had terrily dry skin, even as a child and a preteen but it has gotten better since I wear mosturiser and hydrating foundations when I do. Like anything else, quality of the makeup you buy and what's right for you is a determinating factor if your skin stays in good condition. Many people just don't know what their skin type is and what they can do to improve on it. My mom was an esthetician for several years and I've learnt from her how to keep my skin is good condition and what really causes damage. As for wearing a makeup like a mask, I can't see why you'd think most people who do wear make up would act differently because of it. Some go overboard and cake it on and wear it terribly because they don't know what is flatering for themselves. Other people like me know that if I want people to see I have green, I wear purple eyeliner. Just like a girl with nice legs will wear a skirt that accents them. It's not to be provocative, it's to highlight natural beauty.

I don't really go out of my way to wear make-up although it makes me absolutely gorgeous. I have what people call, "shocking features" when I wear make up. And people have commented me more with make up on...and I've certainly been looked at more by people and the sort...
...Yet...I don't like putting it on and making sure it's still on and fine? And it's scary to wear liquid base in Africa because you end up looking ill if it melts o.o;; But mer? I know there is powder and all - it's just never been a major important thing I have to? I'll dress up and put make up on and sometimes when I go out I'll wear make up.
I kinda also feel if I wear make up that I'm lying about my physical beauty? aka Masking the ugly, etc. I have a pretty face, but when you see the rest you wonder w-t-f mate o.o
My argument is, is that I don't need to feel uncomfortable and twitchy over something and have a what percent better chance of meeting somebody to love and cuddle and what-not? And if it's not me, it's not me o.o;;
P.S. My sister hates this "topic" as she believes I was born to wear make-up. o.o

I was a child model when I was six or seven, and then when I tried to go for "older child to teen" category, I was told, quite plainly, that I wasn't nearly pretty enough. That really didn't affect me that much back then, but recently it's been sticking in my head. What if I'm really not pretty or cute enough? That's why I wear makeup. Also, because of peer pressure! I was roped in by my friend 'Giuliana' who is naturally stunning. Giulie was a early teen model, so obviously she is just, *spits word out* perfect. I hate that she can get ANY guy by acting stupid and flicking her hair. She is just gorgeous, and I don't know why she bothers wearing any makeup.
The mask theory: Women are so concerned that they aren't good enough without slap on. that's why the chavvy British girls in my town wear 4 inch thick foundation. They want to be perfect (Said it again) to the males in their lives. Apparently mascara and some concealer solves all your problems. *scornful scoff*
And so, my point is that I wear makeup to feel better about myself. but I wear it in moderation. Usually only black eyelinder on the top lid and a good amount to mascara. That's no a lot, is it? (I totally lost the point of my statement! That's what I get for doing this 11.30 pm on Christmas!)

it seems like it really depends on the person or situation if they'll wear makeup or not. i had a friend once who just HAD to put on eyeliner everyday. no matter what, she didn't even have a full face of makeup on, but as long as she had her eyeliner, it made her feel good. so in a way, makeup can be a confidence booster and after awhile some people get really attached to the idea that they're doing a little something extra to prove themselves.
i only wear makeup when i'm on stage, back when i did musicals and now when i have choral performances, or when i know there's going to be a lot of flash photography. so like weddings, reunions, stuff like that. otherwise i go out completely with no makeup. i just don't like taking the time to put it all on. and believe you me, my skin isn't perfect, i just don't care enough to cover it up xp

I don't wear makeup on a regular basis. If I feel like dressing up, doing my hair nice & getting generally prettied up, then of course I'll wear it, but I'm not about to waste precious sleeping time putting it on!
I wear makeup when: *I'm having a really "ugly" day, or feel very un-confident (not a word, but I'm tired & it expresses what I mean! blaugh ) *I need to be really confident & look as well as feel good (eg: Job interview etc) *I'm going out (party/club/etc) & am getting dressed up for it. *If I'm planning on being out for long after dark (eg: going to a movie at night, then going out for coffee etc). Purely because I have very pale skin. The few times I've been "out" after dark without makeup, I've had several people say to me "Are you ok? You look really sick...." (No, I'm just pale!.... If I'm out when I'm sick... even just a very light cold, everyone tells me I look like death warmed up... thanks guys! blaugh )
Generally, I'm, confident enough in my own skin to not wear it & still look (& feel ) good... at least my fiance thinks so... & his is the only opinion that matters there!

Ah another pale as death person. Easiest way to not have people gawk at your paleness is to simply put a light blush on and it brightens the face enough that you don't get a green sick pale tint that most pale people get in the wrong lighting.

Makeup helps make you feel prettier. Girls like to feel pretty. It's why we like to go shopping and get new clothes. The media gives all these images of pretty young women, and girls feel the need to conform. It's also a "everyone else is doing it" kinda thing. Parents too - my mum used to put make up on me when I was little, so that got me caught on for a while. I havent worn makeup for years now though, only lip balm (organic, non animal tested, 100% natural lip balm - if you want your skin to look better, go for prevention, not sweeping it under the rug -> www.onegrp.com)

I absolutely LOVE eyeliner. I own it in about twenty different colours.
I don't wear it all the time, but when I do I like to have choices. I wear eyeliner to work, because wearing it helps me remember that I need to make eye contact with customers.
If I'm feelng and looking tired, I'll wear mascara too, because it really seems to make my eyes look more open and awake, so I dont look as tired as I feel.
The only other thing I really wear is lipstick, because my lips are usually really, really pale, it makes me look kindof like a corpse some days. So I'll take a thing of carmex and mix it with a colour lipstick, because it softens the colour so it doesnt look harsh against my skin- my skin is really pale, so I dont wear foundation or anything like that, and my cheeks always look flushed, so rouge is out of the question as well.
Again the carmex/lipstick is only while I'm at work- I have to look nice- its required.
Jeremy hates when I wear make-up. He says I'm gorgeous without it, so unless I'm at work, I don't wear it.
