Act 1: Limits

Part 1: Orestes
The GRE-Cobalt drifted through space in silence, it was part of a small patrol group monitored the outer rim of the Empire after Romulus' coup. Onboard the Cobalt was a contingency of around 350 personnel ranging from medical officers, infantry, and Tactical officers. It had been a casual job, with occasional system sweeps, and the not so often "Boredom break". Of course most of the personnel took their jobs seriously, some merely wanted some action.

As the crew maintained to themselves, the observation deck was occupied only by one person, an Ompim by the designation of "Orestes". The observation deck had always been his place, his escape, his sanctuary if you will. From there he could gaze out into the stars and think, from this little sanctuary he didn't have to deal with the obnoxious humans below. He stood in his Legio armor, it was as black as the void of space and had a pauldron covering his right shoulder, hanging from his waist to his knees was a kama, each was colored black and highlighted with red trim. He was part of the Terror Legion, or as the Ancient Romans would've called them: Frumentarii .

This of course made him stand out from the rest of the personnel, for he had been the only Frumentarii agent aboard that ship, and for all its worth, the ship only needed one. Though it never phased him when the other legionnaires would stare or talk quietly as he passed them, he was far from being hurt by emotional warfare. If anything he was a master of playing with others emotions and creating facades that only he would know were in place. It could be a cruel thing to do, but sometimes it was necessary and it earned him a reputation of suspicion and animosity. Still it would not phase him, nothing did.

Regarding the animosity however there were exceptions to this.
"Orestes."
the voice was from a young lieutenant by the name of Henry Daniels, he was a nice young man with ambitions and dreams of heroism. A stereotypical image of a Roman soldier if anything. He had a loose relationship with Orestes and were more of acquaintances than friends. Still so far Henry and-
"There you two are."
Renee Carter, a heavy weapons soldier belonging to the same unit as Henry, appeared on the observation deck. Orestes sighed, even if they were both "close" to him, he still always appreciated quiet and peace.
"And to what do I owe you two the favor of this visit."
His voice was almost robotic and lacked emotion but it was something the two Legionnaires had gotten used to.
"Well,"
Henry started first placing a gloved finger on his chin in thought,
"We were just bored and decided to come and find you, considering we're on our "Boredom break"."
Orestes sighed at Henry's response
"If anything make yourself busy and clean your armor or something productive."
Renee raised an eyebrow,
"Henry, clean?"
she laughed
Renee sighed, all three of them had been in their armor,
"So why do you always come up here Orestes?"
Orestes looked back at her, three of his eight eyes stared at her, they were empty pools of black and to others were quite frightening.
"I come up here to relax and to allow myself thought."
Renee shrugged and Henry shook his head at her.
For the rest of the thirty minutes the three talked about things that otherwise would've made Orestes leave, however they were his closest things to friends and for that he would deal with them.

Time passed by with relative ease for Orestes, who managed to avoid the fact that Henry and Renee had once again brought up the fact that he was genderless.
"So how do you guys reproduce again?"
Renee had always been curious to how his species managed to find enjoyment.
"It's Aesexual, similar to taking a part of yourself off and growing it like a plant."
Renee chuckled
"HA you're a plant."
Orestes sighed and his expressionless face had betrayed no signs of discontent
"I'm not a plant, I'm a living breathing organic creature, like yourself, the only difference is that I see differently from you, I can manipulate mental frequencies, I'm not of the same species, and-"
"You're genderless."
Renee interrupted
"Just because he doesn't need sex to reproduce doesn't make him weird."
Henry added in Orestes' defence.
"Still everyone needs a little personal pleasure, I mean don't the Ompim do anything like that?"
Orestes motioned for her to sit down,
"Considering my species is absent of gender the need for physical pleasure doesn't matter."
Henry sighed
"To be honest, it almost seems a bit strange, don't you all have female and male variants of yourselves, or at least it's clear in your voices, and if anything I've noticed the female part of your species is rather flat chested."
Renee added
"If that's the case don't you all something to do in each others company?"
Orestes thought back and began to weave his tale.

Orestes however wouldn't be able to explain his childhood as the Cobalt's intercom barked to life,
"All crewman, Yellow alert has been initiated, please report to your stations immediately."
Yellow Alert, was a standby warning for unidentified ships looming close, Orestes reacted immediately and shifted into his leadership role.
"Henry, Renee, with me now."
Henry and Renee nodded in unison and accompanied the Ompim, to the bridge. In the halls, infantryman and other crewman shuffled past them, some holding the standard issue laser rifle close to their bodies.
"Both of you grab your rifles, helmets, and while your at it grab my-"
he ceased, he wouldn't need his Helmet.
Renee and Henry obeyed without a single moment's hesitation and left Orestes to continue to the bridge.

On the Bridge Captain Darius Colva, stood eying the derelict hulk that now drift infront of the ship. Orestes entered and saluted, some members of the Bridge crew glanced at Orestes and he could sense their emotions rise slightly, most with fear. However those feelings ceased as Orestes let his heritage take effect, from his mind he created a field of relaxation that slowly crept its way into the bridge crew and allowed them a calming focus to take their minds off of whatever fears had gripped them before.
"Captain?"
Orestes stood a few feet from the captain, the cool interior of the bridge maintained a nice moderate feeling, while the dull neon blue of the monitor panels gave a faint luminescence to the bridge.
"Can you sense anything from it?"
The captain had a sense of worry about him, the ship from here looked foreboding, it was damaged in some areas, and it seemed as if life support systems had been down for a while.
"From this distance no Captain, I assume you've hailed the ship numerous times, have you received any reply?"
The Captain turned about to face Orestes
"That's the problem, we have."
The Captain brought up a schematic of the ship, from there Orestes noted where the major systems and defensive weapons were located.
"From the looks of it Agent, the ship has lost all life support capabilities, nearly every gun on the ship has been damaged or destroyed, and there are numerous hull breaches on the upper and lower portions of the craft."
Orestes kept his stance, in theory unless they sealed the inner bulkheads in the ship and managed to ration supplies, there should be no survivors. However the Bridge was located far from the center of the ship, where the schematic indicated the communications tower was, although it was a possibility that the survivors managed to secure a radio.
"Orestes, I would like you to assemble a small strike force, you will be accompanied by ten legionnaires from there, I would like you to locate any survivors, and find out what happened."
Orestes didn't like that plan at all
"Sir, regardless if there are survivors or not, the chances that anyone aboard that derelict would be alive are extremely slim, even then we don't have proper knowledge of the situation save for a response and a schematic."
The Captain turned again
"I know you have a displacement among humans but I want you to know that even if there is an extremely small chance, even if the crew are nearly dead, it is our duty to retrieve them and either restore their lives, or let them end among fellow brethren."
Orestes inwardly sighed, he would soon regret this mission.
