It was a relaxing day. The temperature was perfect, there was a slight breeze, and there were a few flowers here and there that the little blue butterfly could land on. Nova followed the little butterfly her father had assigned to watch over her. She giggled as she watched it fly over to her and land on her muzzle. The filly looked around, noting what everything looked like. She usually had her father around to explain what all these things were and why they were. He answered her questions without a second thought and he taught her all that he could. Now, she was alone and still fairly new to this land. The most she had traveled was by her father's side when he showed her the boundary that was assigned for her not to cross until she was older.
For the time being, she was happy with her boundary and having a butterfly show her the way around. At least she wasn't alone, but she couldn't help but want another's company. Someone she had met, maybe? She watched the butterfly move its wings slightly then looked back her own wings and shook her head. She had no idea how to use them just yet, but she would learn eventually.

‘Why did mother have to wander again?’ Wystan asked himself the question that was always constantly on his mind, he knew the answer of course, since he had asked her mother the very same question, ‘Honey, it is my nature; I go where the North Wind takes me. You and your brother are my companions until you are old enough to travel the world by yourself.’ He then continued to ask why it was her nature; she just smiled and gave the answer he disliked the most, for it does not explain more than the single uttered word. ‘Because’ was all she said; Wys wanted to stop his hoof and say ‘why because?’ but he kept his mouth shut, it was a childish act, of which he would not commit.
The young foal with red and gold wings walked quietly among the path, not really caring which direction he was heading, but even with his brain reeling with his thoughts; he was able to remember the tiny details about his surroundings. It was a skill that he had practiced for months, just trying to master and he was still in the rookie stages of observation. In the far distance, a purple speck went in and out of his vision. Curious, he quickened his pace to get closer to the speck.

Nova looked up at the trees, whose leaves chattered and called out to Nova. She merely smiled up at them and continued to walk along, keeping in the boundary her father laid out. Every now and then, the sun would push it's way through the leaves of the overhead trees and warm the little filly's coat. Her wings would shimmer in the sunlight, much like her mother's did. When she felt one of her wings twitch, she looked back at it and tried to repeat the movement, with little to success. "How do these work?"
Nova finally looked ahead of her once more. Her head tilted to the side slightly when she noticed a small figure moving in the distance. It was a little bit bigger than herself and seemed to be less clumsy than the little purple filly was with her legs. They were new after all... Did the thing... er.... foal pick up speed? Nova didn't dare try to move her legs any faster than they were already going, she didn't want to fall over in front of someone else.

Wystan slowed his pace to a more relaxed walk, not wanting to frighten the speck away before he could ask it questions. Soon he was only a few steps away from the purple foal with a white mane and wings different than his. He smiled at the young filly, “Hi there. I didn’t mean to startle you. You wouldn’t happen to be a wind would you? See, I never met one before, all I know about them is what my mother told me.”
A fluttering above her head drew Wystan’s eye to a beautiful butterfly, his eyes widened, “Wow. I have never seen one of those this close. Is it following you?” with his icy blue eyes, he continued to watch the fluttering butterfly above the little filly’s head and then he slowly turned his gaze back upon her and gave her what he considered his most charming smile, which was no different than his regular smile (he made a mental note to work on it) “Oh, I’m Wystan. What’s your name?”

Nova watched as the colt grew closer and closer and his pace slowed significantly. Her own legs wobbled underneath her and her silver eyes darted around, then focused on the colt when she felt the colt was close enough to make eye contact with. "I-I wasn't startled... Yes. I'm a w-wind." It was hard to think of what to say. She wanted to run away to the safety of her father and hide between his towering legs, but her curiosity would not let her leave. She needed answers of her own.
The butterfly landed on the little filly and she smiled softly, knowing a part of her father was with her. "Yes, he is f-following me. He is my daddy's friend." Her almost pure white tail flicked as her purple ears turned to face the colt. The filly's thin legs shook a little, but she soon regained her balance and tried to play it off. Her little muzzle twitched slightly, picking up the scent of the colt standing before her. Her silver eyes looked over him, taking in his features and his large wings. He must be one of those that her father was talking about... oh what were they called? Angeni! She paused when he asked a question. Would she allow this colt to know her name? "N-Nova... my name is Nova.

“Oh. That’s fantastic. What’s it like having two wings?” he turned his head to the right, she seemed new on her feet, not yet used to the long legs holding her up. He remembered those days, Wys was angry at himself because he was so wabbley and not graceful as his mother, who could walk silently through the woods, while he was snapping twigs left and right. If he remembered correctly, it had taken him a while to perfect the art of graceful walking along with the silent hoof falls.
Wystan’s gaze turned back to the tiny butterfly that had found its resting place on the foal, “Why is he following you and how do you know it’s a he?”
He watched as she took in his scent and gave him a once over; her gaze stopped for a second on his wings, and he wondered what he looked like to her. Some strange foal with four huge wings, while she only had two that were closely folded on her back. He wanted to get a better look at her wings, but he knew that it would probably scare her away and it would be rude in some way.
“It’s very nice to meet you Nova,” Wystan gave a small nod and smile to the filly, “What does it mean?”

Nova sort of just shrugged her shoulders before answering his question with words. "I'm not ex-exactly sure just yet. They kinda h-have a mind of their own." She was growing less fearful of this colt, but still struggled to think of what to say to him. Luckily, he seemed to have enough to say and ask for the both of them. Nova glanced at her wings as the breeze caused the little sparkling feathers to dance with the breeze and glimmer with the sun's light.
She wanted to giggle at the colt's questions, figuring everyone knew about butterflies. Her whole family knew about the butterflies. "Well, my daddy told him to follow me and he told me the butterfly was a boy, so I j-just listen to my daddy."
Her pale tail flicked and she watched the colt's gaze shift to her wings once again. If she knew how, she would stretch them out for him to get a better view of them. Instead, she struggled to simply get them to twitch for now. Nova's tongue curled around her upper lip as she tried and tried again to get her wings to stretch with little success.
"It is nice to meet you Wystan." Where were her manners? Why hadn't she said that earlier? Her father and mother had taught her better. "My name? IIt means chasing butterflies." Of course, her father named her. She was his little butterfly princess after all. "Does your name mean anything?" She was happy to notice that her heart wasn't racing as fast as it was earlier when she was answering his questions and her stuttering seemed to be fading away.

She seemed less nervous around him and Wystan was glad that she had not yet fled (which many do, and he does not understand why? Does he have an overbearing personality or something?) “Really? That’s interesting,” he smiled, “you’ll get a hold of ‘em soon enough, I’m sure of it.”
Wystan noticed that her tone changed just a tad, but then went back to the way it was before, “You’re father can speak to butterflies? I don’t know much about them, expect the spiritual aspects of them, and even that is not much.”
The colt watched as she tried to connect the thought to the muscle movement to spread her wings, there was a slight twitch, then nothing. “Don’t hurt yourself,” he gave her a small kind smile, “I’m not sure this will work, but my mother had my brother and I try it to get our wings under control. I believe it worked because of my hard work; mother on the other hoof disagrees. Wanna try it?” There was no harm in her trying the technique that Isabliss did on her two sons, it would be just a quick experiment that would either prove Wys right or wrong (there was a middle ground, but wanted to be 100% right, not 50%).
“Chasing butterflies, never would have guessed that, I was thinking more of a nova in the sky. You know the star that suddenly increases in brightness and then after a few months or years it goes back to its normal brightness?” He looked up at the sky as he said this, as if expecting (which he wasn’t) to see a nova during the day, “Yes. Wystan means ‘Battle Stone’ in Old English.”

Her soft voice still remained, but the stuttering ceased. She smiled as she spoke to the colt, a true smile not one of the ones her father told her was a 'polite smile.' "In a way, yes he can speak to the butterflies." She was rather proud of this fact. "He will teach me to talk to them one day." Nova beamed with joy and pride, much like her father did whenever she was simply around him.
Her head tilted. Hurt herself? How could she do that? She shrugged her shoulders at her thoughts and listened to the colt explain his mother's idea. Nova nodded her head. Of course, she would do almost anything to learn how to make these strange things on her back work. She glanced back at them, the bit that the sun beat down on glimmered, like her mother's wings did. "Sure, we can try it." The filly said as she turned her head back towards the colt.
All that he said about the star went straight over her head. She listened and nodded and took mental notes. Her father would have to explain this to her. At the explanation of his name, she glanced at his markings. He did look like a stone. "Your name fits you well."

Wys’ eyes widened when he noticed that Nova’s words lacked her original stutter; he smiled, could it be that she was getting used to him? “That would be a sight to see, and to be able to learn how to talk to butterflies… you are one lucky filly.” He beamed back at her, he could not help it.
He gave a small nod at her words, “Okay, first close your eyes. Imagine the place where you are the most happy, and then, when you have that image in mind, take a deep breath in and then let it out. Continue to do this; breathe in, breathe out. Then when you are completely relaxed, and your breathing is in that normal deep inhale and exhale imagine moving your wings, fluttering them, stretching them, whatever you wish.”
It was strange, he never thought his name fit him, because he was not one for battle, but the way she put it, made him rethink that there was a chance that it did fit him.
“Thank you. And your name definitely fits you as well; I forgot to tell you that before.” Wystan was too excited before to tell her that her name was perfect for her. “Are you from around her?”

Nova glanced over her shoulder then returned her gaze to the colt. Had she said something wrong? Why were his eyes wider than normal? Her fears calmed for a moment when he began to speak as if nothing had happened. "You never know, maybe I will be able to teach you how to speak to them one of these days." Her silver eyes looked to his blue ones then at his wings.
It couldn't be that easy to move her wings, right? She closed her eyes like he said and began to imagine being with her family. The filly followed each step precisely, but nothing happened. The wings did more than a twitch now, they shuffled as if contemplating whether or not to unfold and reveal themselves to the world. Like the filly, they were too shy to expose themselves.
She opened her eyes and glanced back at the sparkling wings. "Did anything happen?" Nova asked the colt, hoping that at least something happened.
After that little adventure she nodded her head at the colts previous question. "Yes, I live really close to here. My daddy doesn't let me go too far away." The butterfly was now resting on a nearby flower. "And he never lets me go out alone."

This time when his eyes got big it was with happy surprise, “Really? You would teach me? That would be… I am at a loss of words.” That was a first for the very talkative question asking colt.
Nova closed her eyes and followed the steps that he told her to do, he watched as she tried to move to wings, to spread them away from her body and have them be free for once. To have the feeling of the wind on her wings and the sun warming them as they were outstretched, but all she got in return was a small twitch. The way she asked the question made him want to answer her and say yes, your wings did stretch, but then he would be lying and that would help no one, not even himself.
“They twitched; I wish I could tell you that they did more. Keep trying and I am sure that your wings will spread and you will take flight.”
The soft breeze blew through his mane, keeping him cool from the hot sun high above his head; the scent of wild flowers filled his nose. It really was a beautiful day, not that he would admit that to anyone, not wanting to seem too mushy.
“Ah, and I am guessing that this little guy will tell your father of our encounter.” He nodded his head toward the butterfly that rested on a flower, “Do you want to look around with me? I want to learn more about this place and butterflies.”

Nova watched his eyes grow big once more and she let herself giggle, but quickly stopped herself. She didn't want to be rude after all. "Of course, you are my friend after all." Hopefully he thought they were friends as well. They didn't know each other well, but he was the only soquili she had met outside her family members.
Her face twisted slightly in disappointment, but soon returned to normal and she sighed softly. Practice made perfect, no? Her own mane flopped slightly with the breeze and she smiled softly, enjoying every bit of it. It was the perfect day to make a new friend. It was one of those days one could never seem to forget. It was a perfect day.
Nova glanced down at the little butterfly, who wiggled it's own wings for a moment. "Most likely." She said softly with a smile to the colt. "Yes! I would love to look around with you." The little filly knew most of the place, but always felt she needed to learn more about it, for if she ever needed a hiding spot or wanted to take a friend to a fun place to play.

It appeared like she wanted to giggle but held herself back, “You don’t have to do that, one thing I learned from my mother, is that you should laugh and not hold it back… Friends… Yes.. I would like that,” he nodded his head and gives her a big smile. That was one occurrence that he enjoyed about traveling with his mother, he was able to meet new people and make new friends. There was always something or someone new, they always had different answers for him, and he was quickly gaining more knowledge than his mother (or so he thought, he still has a long way until he could out smart his mother).
He felt bad that his idea did not work and he wanted to do something to make it right, but nothing came to mind at the moment. Where there any other ways to help her move her wings? Well, there was the way that birds learned to fly, but Wystan did not want to push Nova out of a tree or off a cliff. It had bad plan written all over it.
“A good report I hope?” His look a cross between pleading and curiosity toward the little butterfly, then he turned his gaze back on the purple filly, “Good. Which way do you recommend we go? I am in your capable hooves.”

Nova nodded her head. A first friend! How exciting. She would have to tell her father all about her friend, she didn't need the butterfly by her side it seemed. This colt obviously wasn't a threat. She let herself almost completely relax now. He was a friend and it seemed he could be trusted enough for her to drop her guard somewhat.
The purple filly nodded her head with a big grin on her face. "Of course a good report. You have been very kind." She nodded her head and looked around, trying to remember where all her father had taken her. With a shrug, she turned in a random direction and began walking. The butterfly would help them get back if they found themselves lost. "Lets go this way!" Nova began walking, the stopped and waited for her friend to join her by her side.
She looked at his wings four on his back, two on his head, and two by his hooves. "Why do you have so many wings?" Curiosity got the best of the filly and she wanted to learn more about her friend, he seemed to know quite a bit about her by now.
