Who was it that was looking forward to this in particular?
DT and Moon?
I just saw gaia's ad for it and recalled Moon posting. Is it out? Anyone looking forward to it or seen it (if it's out)?

I wanna see that movie with the three couples and going to the resort or something. it's a comedy movie. Mom was going to order it the other night but then we got preoccupied and didn't get to watch it (comcast).
Anyone seen that one yet?

It looks like a not nearly as dark version of American McGee's Alice.
PostPosted: Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:35 pm

@ Moonlight:
Wasn't that movie... lessee... was it the one with Vince Vaughn???
Couple's Retreat?
Is that the name of it?
I think that's the movie... Haven't watched it yet, but it looked really funny. lol rofl

Anyway, the new Alice in Wonderland movie looks pretty cool, but until we actually see the movie, it's still unclear... I even got me avi all greened up. mrgreen

...Hmm... wonder if it'll be even bigger than Avatar? (Doubt it, but still... Tim Burton's directing, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter... lots of expectations for this film... 3nodding )

Has any one else tried the little game on Gaia where you have to match the emotes that Alice has over her head? It looks like there's other areas, but it kept taking me back to that one spot over and over...

I'm honestly afraid of the new Alice movie.
The movie looks visually stunning, but the storyline I'm not so sure about.
Apparently it's a sequel to Through the Looking Glass.
So Alice is going back as a teenager.
(Because in the books she's like ten, she's a kid)

The storyline definitely has potential, but that way I see it it can only be either really good or really bad.
I think it's one of those movies that's being overhyped, so I'm purposely trying to keep my expectations very low.
I'm still peeved that it appears the Mad Hatter is a huge, if not the main, character in the movie.
It's "Alice in Wonderland" not "The Mad Hatter in Wonderland"
(If you read the book he really is only in it for maybe a chapter and then reappears again for a couple pages towards the end.)
When it comes to movies based off books I've read I'm very picky.
I'm like those comic book nerds, no offense if you are one I mean nerd affectionately not meanly, that b***h and moan everytime a new superhero movie comes out because Hollywood is going to ******** up their favorite classic characters.
but with books.
Alice in Wonderland is one of those movies that I'll probably have to seperate from the book to enjoy.

I watched Percy Jackson and the Olmpians: The Lightning Theif the day it came out.
(Accidentaly, I swear if I knew it had come out that day I wouldn't have gone to the movies. I just happened to idly check the shows that morning and was like "Hey, let's watch that" because my mom only went to work half the day. I hate going to the movies when it's really crowded and it was a full theatre.)
But it was pretty good.
And no, I haven't read the book if anyone was going to ask.
Now that I've watched that there aren't really any movies that I want to go see though.

I don't like the fact that it's in 3-D
=/
It tends to push the makers into putting alot of pointless scenes meant purely for
"Oooh Look at all those random 3-D Object flying at you! Sure you're stuck watching leaves fly around for 5 minutes BUT! They're 3-D Leaves!)
Plus 3-D gives me a head ache.
But aaanway.

I adore the books.
And I like seeing the different movies made from them.
Some have been an interesting twist on the books,
others have been very faithfull to them and made me quite contend
and yet others have made me want to throw something blunt and heavy at the people responsible.

I'm hoping that Tim Burton's attempt won't be in the last categorie.
So far I'm rather excited about
although I do feel a healthy amount of worry that it will be a failure.

I'm actualy quite fond of Tim Burton movies.
I like the look and feel of dark innocence in them.
But...
I rather thought his remake of Willy Wonka was absolutely dreadfull though Dx
And his Sweeny Todd, although decent entertainment,
is not among my favourite films.
Have to admit the movies based on his own ideas rather then remakes tend to be much better.
So him taking on such a cherished book worries me alot.

And the fact that he's making it a sort of a sequal actualy calms me down a bit.
Since well...if he's not really following the books he at least can't mess up the storyline.
(dear god how I worry about the character though. He do not like what I've seen of the Mad Hatter so far :c )

But I'm rather excited about 5 of the actors in it
-Alan Rickman as the Catterpillar
-Christopher Lee as the Jabberwocky
-Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts
-Stephen Fry as the Chesire Cat
-Helena Boneham Carter as the queen.

The White Queen also looks faintly interesting.

I'm not so sure of Johnny Depp.
I do admire him as an actor,
but ever since the PotC craze
the mere mention of his name annoys me to a point,
but that is through no fault of his own
since he is an talented actor.
(Hell. He used to be one of my favourit actors. Still is too a point,
even if I rarely like admitting it these days since I don't like being sacked together with crazy Jack Sparrow fans, since honestly. Not his best role by far.)
So hopefully he'll do well.

I'm just not completely sure if he's suited for it,
since from what I've seen from the comercial he's a bit...
Willy Wonka like =/

Okey. My rant is done now.

That's it!!! Couples Retreat!! I wanna see it!! ^_^

So Alice is going to be a teenager and is it based on the book then or the 'dark' alice version? And what's Through the Looking Glass? 3nodding

I'm surprised at it being 3-D. I had no idea. Seems like most movies are. Wonder if it'll be amazing in IMAX like Avatar. (We keep saying we'll see it in IMAX but everytime it's like "ready to go?" "eh...not today...tomorrow?". One sec I feel like seeing it the next second...not so really...)

There's nothing really wrong with 3-D in my opinion. There's plenty of things out there that's really good in 3-D, but then there's others than simply use them as decorative. As Klikk said,

Oooh Look at all those random 3-D Object flying at you! Sure you're stuck watching leaves fly around for 5 minutes BUT! They're 3-D Leaves!)

That really aggravates me.
Anyway, apparently I'm completely out of the loop, cause I've never heard of this... "Through the Looking Glass", so I didn't realize that the Alice in Wonderland movie was a possible sequel to this... whatever it is.

One thing I've got to say: If someone makes a movie of "Wicked" and totally butchers it, I will be p*****.
The play based on the book is totally tame and foolish compare to the book.

Throught the Looking Glass is sort of
the sequal (but not really since it makes no real reference too it)to Alice in Wonderland. Bouth are written in that nonesence literal style.

Many movies have sort of messed the two together.
Like the Disney version,
for example many movies called "Alice in Wonderland" have the characters Tweedledum and Tweedledee,
who do in fact only appear in Through the Looking Glass.
And of course the poem they recite about The Walrus and the Carpenter is also only in Through the Looking Glass.

So yah.
The movie being the sequel to Through the Looking Glass
is basicly the same as being a sequel to Alice in Wonderland since
bouth are kinda about Alice being all confused in Wonderland and then waking up being all "Well wasnt that odd"
Just slightly different characters.
Alice in Wonderland has the Queen of Hearts.
And Through the Looking Glass has the Red Queen, who instead of being in playing card theme is chess themed.

So yah.
All that text is me basicly saying that it's not nececerie too have read it.

Although I do reccomend it since Literary Nonesence is always great fun.

Wicked ay?
I've never read it. It's on my "to read" list though. Since it sound rather interesting.

I feelt that way when I heard they were making "Stardust" by Neil Gaiman who is without a doupt my favourite author and I'd always been very fond of Stardust.
But then came the movie...and...it was like,
so very different. So very very very different.
Which annoys me on one hand since it gives people who havent read the book a completely wrong idea of it and again, I liked the book, it's got a dark sort of origional grimm tales feel too it and the viola! There comes the movie all happy, and cheerful.
But on the other hand I like it since its sort of a charming film.
And it's sort of more...roughly based on the book instead of trying too follow it, kinda like a different approuch to the story idea which is better then trying to make it accurate but failing badly since every important scene wouldnt have fitted without going all Lord of the Rings on it...
And appearantly it was the dark nature of the book with all it's sex and violence that was making it difficult adapting into a movie. so yah making it all humourus with flamboyant pirates (the pirates in the book were quite serious only appeared for like...) and such propobly made sence.
Plus Gaiman appearantly gave the screenwriters his blessing,
...
I still dislike how the movie ends. It goes all Hollywood
:'c

And yes.
This rant is so totaly unrelated too this topic.
I honestly have no idea why I even wrote this.

I was about to cover Through the Looking Glass but klikk beat me to it. xD
But she reminded me I've been meaning to read Neil Gaiman since I've heard a lot of good things about his books but never picked them up since I'm always reading something else.
(I thought Stardust was a quite charming movie, was it really that different?)
PostPosted: Thu Feb 18, 2010 4:00 pm

Extremely different.
The main storyline and some of the main characters are of course the same but honestly,
The book is much darker, and most of the character behave way differently in the book.
Plus there are no crossdressing pirates.
....
there should be though, since honestly. There is nothing that can't be made slightly better with crossdressing pirates.

But yes.
The difference between the book and the movie is sort of like watching a Disney version of a fairytale and then reading the origional version of it.
Where all of a sudden you find out there is all this blood and violence and the occasional sexual reference.

I fully reccomend reading Neil Gaimans novels.

If you tell me something about your taste in books I could perhaps reccomend a book of his too try first?
Since I'm pretty sure I've read about all of 'em.
Since they're awesome.

I can't think of anything that wouldn't be better with crossdressing pirates.
That was hilarious.

I see.
It's strange when movies do that.
But good comparison.

I'm pretty open with books.
People keep telling me to read Good Omens which was specifically the one I kept meaning to pick up.
I also meant to read Coraline a while back but it was $15 for the skinny little book so I bought a much larger book for the same price instead.
PostPosted: Fri Feb 19, 2010 2:46 am

Especialy since it was Robert.
I honestly never thought I would see that man crossdressing.
But there he was. Dancing. In his little skirt.
Yaarrr.
Good Omens is pretty darn good.
And since it's co-written with Terry Pratchett it's like...
I have no way too describe it.
Since he sort of shares the "favourite writer" spot with Neil in my mind.

So that one has a bit more comedy then his ussual work.
Or perhaps only different. Since he does comedy quite well himself, he"s just a bit more subtle about it then Pratchett.

American Gods is however one of my favourite books,
favourite of Neil Gaimans books and really just my favourite book in general.
One of the few works I've read that actualy manages too put the old Gods walking around in the modern age and make it actualy work.
This is mostly because Neil obviously does his freaking research on Gods and also manages too put his own unique spin on them.
Like the Norse gods that are in it. He actualy got them right.
It's amasing how few times people actualy manage that.
Ehem./end rant/
Aaaanyways. That's a good book of his if one wants too read something more serious then Good Omens.

Plus if one reads that one could go ahead and read the semi-sequal
"Anansi Boys" which is actualy quite hilarious with murderous flamingos and jolly african gods who like karaoke and fedora hats.

If however, one wants too read something a bit more whimsical,
"The Graveyard Book" would be a good choice,
a story about a boy name Nobody, mostly normal other then fact that he lives in a cemetery and is being raised by ghosts,
the story sort of follows his growing up and his adventures in the graveyard, like the abandoned city of ghouls and the terrible Sleer.
(I'm giving no spoilers I swear, I pretty much know the description of the book by heart and I'm not giving anything away that isnt there)

And well.
If one like Alice in Wonderland sort of a feel to a story
"Neverwhere" would be a good choice actualy.
A story about a man that after helping a bleeding girl ends up being dragged into a city below London, a city where things forgotten and Lost end up.

Also if you are into short stories and story like poems, and would honestly just like a clear wiew of his range as a writer,
then he does write fantastic short storier.
I would reccomend "Fragile Things" and "Smoke and Mirrors" for that.
They have absolutely smashing stories in it. Ranging all the way from sweet little whimsical stories about an Old lady that buys the Holy Grail at a thrift market and a Knights Quest too get her to let him have it, and too sexual horror stories, science fiction and fairytale style poetry.

<.<
I like talking about his books but none of my friends are that active readers so I never really get the chance.
So yes. 'cough'

I've never read Terry Pratchett either. sweatdrop
But all those books sound really interesting.
Especially "The Graveyard Book" and "Neverwhere"
It's going to be tough to pick which one to read first next time I go to the bookstore. xD
I may just pick up one of those books of short stories to give me an idea of what he can do, as you said, then go from there.

I don't read as much as I used to because I can't seem to find the time.
But right now I'm reading H.P. Lovecraft.
I picked up a book of his stories a while ago and I'm really liking them.
But right now I am also right in the middle of "Lolita" and "Only Revolutions" and "Genius Squad"
(I lost "Genius Squad" though, otherwise I'd have finished it a while ago.)
