There a beautiful lake some distance away from the playground, the water is clear and sparkles in the daylight. This place is secluded and surrounded by lush trees. Everything is perfect and it is said that the lake glows in when the moon comes out.

Walter placed Freya down and she bolted to the water almost instantly. She was so excited to come to the lake, she just loved the way everything looked with its reflection coming off the water. She couldn't understand it quite well and dabbed her hands on the water, creating ripples and distorting the reflection of herself. She giggled, "Look! Look!" She called over to Walter.
He stepped forward and looked down at her playing. He gave a smile and bulged his eyes out in amazement. "Wow, sweetheart! Do it again!"
And she did a few times more, entranced by everything her activity. The reflection waving in ripples, the wet feeling on her hand, the splish-splash sound. Her attention went elsewhere for a bit, but she smiled big when she saw herself in the water again.

Hayden, being the adventurous kid he was, had managed to sneak away from his caretaker and found himself at the lake. The lake itself wasn't so bad, but Hayden didn't like it for some reason. Nevertheless, he stood by the shore and stared down at the water rather intensely for someone his age.
He wanted to try getting in it, after all it looked like a super sized bath, but for some reason the idea of getting in more water just seemed appalling to him. Frustrated, he turned his lime green eyes up when he heard the sound of voices off to the side. He watched the two curiously before he turned and stomped along the side of the shore to get closer to them. His mother had said not to talk to strange grown-ups, but he figured it would be okay if he just talked to the girl playing in the water.

Walter sat down at nearby tree as she played and took out his cell phone. Ugh, he thought. I told my assistant I wouldn't be coming in today, so why does he have to bother me now? He the call some distance away from Freya, he knew this situation was probably going to get him to say a few things he didn't want her to hear.
Freya looked up from her splashing to see a boy around her age coming close to her. She smiled big. "Hey, hey! Come here!" she coaxed. "You gotta see this, look!" She said again as she slapped her hand down on the water, sending more ripples across the lake that traveled well past how far she'd ever think to swim.

He wandered over to Freya and then sat down next to her, watching the ripples with intense interest. "S'it hurt t'hit the wa'er?" He frowned, eyes narrowing on the offensive stuff. Timidly he reached out and poked it with a finger lightly, causing a few small ripples that disappeared almost instantly. "Weeeeet..." He complained and shook his hand as if he'd touched the most disgusting thing ever.

Freya look at Hayden curiously, still smiling as ever. "Heeey... It's not bad, look!" She dunked her entire had in the lake and moved it around. She held up her wet hand and grabbed his hand with her wet palm. "See? It doesn't hurt."
Walter had his hand over his forehead. Such a headache. Of course he couldn't expect his assistant to be okay for just ONE day! He always had to hold his hand while talking with clients. He calmed down and took a breath and began his long list of instructions.

Hayden stared at her, eyes wide with awe. The water didn't seem to phase her at all! He allowed her to take his hand into hers, and kept his eyes focused on the water. "Dun like wa'er..." He commented bluntly. It felt weird to him, even in the bath.
Still, he was determined to enjoy it like this girl did. He reached out with his other hand and placed it into the water. It stayed there for a few seconds before he shrieked and pulled it out. Something felt very, very wrong. He pulled his hand out of Freya's and then touched his neck where he felt the vibrations from speaking, but even though his mouth was moving nothing was coming out!

Freya winced at Hayden's shriek before she noticed that it had seemed to be cut off abruptly while he still had shrieked. "Huh? Whatsa matter?" she tilted her head with a concerned look as his hands went to his neck. She turned to her dad to see if he could help her, but he was facing away now, behind a tree and waving his arms again. He usually did that so that she didn't hear him use swears. She frowned at him. Silly daddy, she thought to herself. She looked closer at his neck. "Issit a bug bite?"

Hayden opened his mouth to reply, but again no sound came out. That only worried him more, so he waved his arms around a little and then stood up. The water had probably made it so he couldn't talk, and as soon as he came to that solution he backed away from it.

"You're weird, but that's okay," she said as she tried to make sense of him. She looked as he backed away from the water and quickly stopped when she saw a stick. Instantly, she picked it up and started poking the water with it before slamming it down as hard as her little arms could. It wasn't that hard, but it was enough for her to be amazed by the wooshing sound of the stick and the wet splash against the lake.

Hayden simply stared at her for a moment. He wasn't playing a game! The distress was enough to cause him to seek out some form of help elsewhere since this person obviously couldn't notice the problem. He turned and started to walk away, eyes scanning the surroundings for other people in the area.

"Hey! Don't you wanna play with me?" Freya yelled back out to Hayden. She stood there with a hopeful, but still pouting face.
Hearing the outburst, Walter looked up from his phone to see a boy near his daughter with no sign of an adult. Instantly, he shot at his assistant, "Look, I don't care what you do, I gotta go NOW." He would slam his phone, but it was expensive and required him to slide his finger across the screen. No way to do that in any sort of anger or urgency. He quickly shot up from behind the tree and strolled hesitantly to the two of the, trying not to seem too freaked out.
"Uh... whatcha kids doing?" He tried to regain his composure, but by looking away a moment and turning back, almost as if he expected to be a new person once his face returned to them.
"Oh, that boy came and played with me but he's weird," Freya stated. She distanced herself from him, fearing that she was going to be in trouble for talking to him.
"Freya... that's not a nice thing to say," Walter replied.
"Sorry..." now she knew she was in trouble.
"Not to me, Freya."
"Okay," she looked over to Hayden. "I'm sorry I called you weird."
"What's his name?" Walter changed the subject quickly. He had to be in control of this situation without alienating either of them, but he had a better chance at redirecting his entire workforce from a cellphone than that.
"I dunno..." Freya trailed off, looking at him almost expecting him to come up with a way to get out of the situation entirely.

Hayden ignored her shout, he most definitely didn't want to play in the water anymore. Instead he kept trudging along until Walter appeared from behind the tree. Now don't go talking to strange adults okay? His mother's words echoed in his head, but Walter seemed to know the little girl he'd been playing with so surely it was okay to talk to him? He'd tell his mother about it later, maybe that would make it better.
Hayden opened his mouth to talk, but this time a series of crackling noises (I hate doing this, but think of the Grudge? The noise that lady makes) came out instead of actual words. Hayden clamped his mouth shut and placed his hands over it, a surprised look came over his face. On one hand, he was regaining some voice, but on the other it was crackling!
He glanced from Freya to Walter, wondering if Walter was going to be as oblivious to his problem as Freya had been.

Walter looked down at the boy with an eerie suspicion. Something was obviously different with this boy, but something was different about Freya, too. He had learned that when she started glittering everything in her room by touching it. Or perhaps the boy just had a throat problem.
"He's being weird again," Freya almost warned.
"What did I just finish telling you?" Walter shot back.
"Sorry..." she came up to Hayden and felt his forehead. "It isn't hot... Can he still be sick?"
"He probably just lost his voice," Walter tried to rationalize out loud.
"Huh?? Really? You can DO that?" Freya was amazed for a second and starting to look at the boy with amazement before realizing that something was wrong about losing your voice. "How do we find it?"
"Oh, it's not like that, honey," Walter began another explanation. "He probably just needs something cold to drink. Like ice cream."
"What, really? I want to lose my voice too!"
"Don't be silly, it's not as good as you think."
"Voice! Here voice! Come back!"
Walter's hand met with his forehead once again. "No honey, it's not like..." he stopped himself before going on yet another explanation to her. "Well, I suppose we'd need to try to do something." He looked over to Hayden and came down to his level. "Hey there, sweetie. Do you know where your mom or dad is?" he asked. Maybe they knew about him better than he could guess.

[Freya is just adorable!]
Hayden remained silent while they talked about the possibilities of what could be going on. Well, to him it was obvious that he'd lost his voice, but he couldn't tell them that now could he? He opened his mouth again to talk, some more crackling noises came out along with a few normal "ahh" noises as well.
He shook his head, he had no idea where his big brother had gone and he didn't know how to get back to his house. "Ssssk..." He tried saying his brother's name, which of course failed but he at least got two of the noises out. "Desss..." He tried again, it seemed that the more he tried to speak the easier it was coming back to him.
