I have a question for y'all. Do braces mess with your playing at all? Does it make playing certain instruments hard to play? I'm kinda worried 'cause I play the oboe, and I'm getting braces soon. sweatdrop

I'm actually in the same boat as you. I'm getting my braces on next wednesday, and I'm totally freaking out. I play the tenor sax, and I'm worried that it'll hurt when I roll my lips over my bottom teeth. Can anyone tell us if it really hurts that much or not?

While they make it harder to play, they're great training weights. However, I recommend the Morgan Bumper for all brass players. You put them on your braces, and the braces no longer cut into your lip while playing. I don't know their effectiveness with woodwinds.

Braces is just something you have to get over. WHen I started playing, I had braces, but got them off the next year. It was hard adjusting to them, just like it was hard adjusting when I went back to retainers (I wore retainers and then they broke and then like 3 years later I got them again). MOstly because I created more spit when I had retainers in so i was always draining my trumpet. You'll learn to adapt to your braces- just hang in there. One of our best trumpet players had horrible teeth and went through some serious dental work. ONe thing my BD suggested he do is place is trumpet on a table (make sure it can't move) and the blow into it without touching it. I forget why exactly, but it helps build up your embuchure and stuff.

Braces suck hardcore.... for french horn, at least. I got mine and it set me at least a whole year back. I couldn't even play up to a concert F in the staff for at least two whole weeks. I've had them since last January and I'm almost back to normal.

I was just about to make a thread about this eek anyways, I just got my braces today, and it does hurt and mess with your playing! but you have to get used to it...and change your embouchure some how, talk to your conductor about it...soon?

anyways, I play clarinet, it also depends on what instrument you play...either that or it affects all musicians o-O; except percussionist...and today after eating dinner I tried to play my clarinet and it sounded flat o_O;; for thirty minutes I couldn't get my lips pass my braces...and when I did for fifteen minutes I was just blowing air...when I finally produced a note it was flat... crying either that or sharp...it sounded sharp to me now that I think about it...(I'm fortunate I didn't get into all southern, they'd hate me if I was sharp ahahah)

braces hurt and are a pain in teh butt crying

When you first play it is really hard to play or press your lips against the mouthpiece( i play clarinet). I have had braces since may and now i think i play better than when i didnt have braces. Just make sure you get a lot of wax because they cut into your cheeks.

It hurt me a bit, but it's not so bad. I play the clarinet, and it impacted my playing, but it was great for practicing my mouth shapes and breathing. I'm a lot better at that now. They suck while they're on, but they make you a better player in the long run ^_^.

Out of curiosity, what do you play?
PostPosted: Tue Dec 27, 2005 8:47 pm

I guess it depends on the person.
Mine didnt hurt at all. It depends how your teeth are.. if they are pushed forward or not because, of course, if your getting them straightened it would be hard to adjust.
It wasnt hard for me at all.. sometimes if hurts a little bit whenyou get the tightened each month, but they only hurt for me after i finish playing.
Something you get used too.

Dont worry about it, You will still be able to play (hopefuly). I pay the clarinet and my only trouble is that there is more spit (hehe). heart
AND i arrange mine on tuesdays after school (band days) so you'll be able to have a day off when you get them tightened, because i dont recommend playing asap.

I hope all goes well! PM is you wanna talk mor and such.

with brasses I heard you can get special mouthpieces that don't hurt.
I played clarinet and it kinda hurt, I have scars in my mouth from where I played on the braces, also when you get them tightened wait a little while or your just asking for pain, lots of it, and when you get them on and off.
however this is just my experience,

My freshman got braces about a month ago, and one of our BD's got mad at him since he wasn't used to them about two weeks in. It's been a hard transition for him, especially since he plays trumpet. He's been putting some sort of tape on his teeth while he plays to ease the pain (at first it was wax! gonk )

As for advice, I can't give you much, since my braces came off before I was old enough to be in band. But I'll say this: practice regularly (but not every day! gonk That would hurt!) so you can get used to them. Don't play anything complicated or high. Eventually, you'll get used to it.

Then again, I don't know much about oboes...

I used to have braces, and they didn't really bother me that much. Guess it depends on what instrument you play.
