Try to relax. It was easy for her friends to say that, they weren't about to stand for a hatching, and apparently they weren't too worried about the possibility of the plague returning either. How anyone could be so laid back she had no idea, but apparently some people were. She was not some people. She was scared.

The water of the hot springs was trying to relax her muscles, but her body was fighting back. It didn't want to relax, her spinning mind had it convinced that it was going to have to run away from something very soon indeed. Shivering despite the warmth, Layla drew her knees up to her chest and hugged them.

Since word had come from High Reaches about what was happening she hadn't been able to calm the racing of her heart or put fear out of her mind. Either she was thinking about the plague and panicking, thinking about the hatching and panicking, or thinking about both together and seriously panicking. There was no way this was going to work, but she supposed the springs was as good a place to freak out as any.

Shivering again, Layla dropped her head down onto her knees and closed her eyes. It would be alright. It would. It had to be.

Ugh! A look of disgust passed over the boys face as he made his way out of the caverns. Catching tunnel snakes was not easy and he didn't smell very pleasant. Unfortunately, it was one of the easier ways to make a few marks and he did want to have some saved up. Although sometimes it was hard to fit it in with all of his chores. Though, keeping busy was something that he enjoyed lately. It didn't allow him too much time to think, and there were days where he much appreciated not thinking.

Zhierd hurried along to where the hot springs were. He was pretty sure that he could be smelled from miles away and he needed to get cleaned up. There was no way he was going to go the rest of the day smelling like this. How on earth would he get any girls? He grinned a little at that thought. He hadn't really had much time to socialize lately but maybe there would be a pretty girl at the hot springs? One could only hope.

The boy slowed to a casual walk as he entered the springs. There was usually water about and he didn't particularly feel like falling on his face today. He was sure there would be plenty of time for that later. Looking around a little, he saw a few riders over to his right but on his left sat one girl who seemed to be alone. Was she a candidate? He thought so, she definitely seemed to look familiar. Zhierd doubted he actually knew her but was pretty sure that he had seen her around. Until recently he hadn't been very social with girls. Mostly just awkward. He carefully climbed into the springs and moved closer to her. "Mind if I sit with you?" He asked politely.

The sudden voice made her start up with a yelp, and immediately feel like a fool. Why did she have to jump at everything? Why did she have to be so scared? "Uuuh, umm, sure," Layla sniffed and splashed her face with water, hoping that this would hide the fact that she had been crying. Some hope. "Go ahead," she went on, trying to force a smile, "I'd appreciate the company... Umm... Are you... Zhierd?" She thought that was his name; they hadn't really talked before, but of course she'd seen him around the place. "It's Layla," she went on, just in case he didn't know.

If she was in his situation and didn't know, she'd be too embarrassed to ask, and would somehow end up looking really stupid later because of it. If she could spare someone looking stupid, then good. Nobody needed to feel bad even when life was going alright. When the threat of plague hung in the air, everyone needed all the help to feel okay that they could get. Especially her.

"Nice to meet you Layla. I mean I've seen you around before too but I've mostly been keeping to myself lately." He shrugged. Had she been crying? Her eyes looked a little red but maybe she had allergies or the water was bothering them. Either way it would be terribly rude to ask or point it out. Instead he thought he'd try and cheer her up a bit. What with the hatching and the rumor of the plague, there was plenty to be upset about and frightened over lately. As it was he himself was a little worried about the hatching. He had been to one before and it could get really ugly. Especially if you weren't fast enough. Although the chance to impress was definitely worth it.

"You're a candidate too right?" He asked. Although he was pretty sure she was but it would be silly of him to assume and then be wrong. Zhierd smiled at her again. In times like these it was best to stay hopeful and friendly. Besides, everyone could use another friend.

Good, either he hadn't noticed or he was being nice enough to ignore it... She suppose offering comfort would have been a nice gesture too, but right now she preferred to pretend it wasn't happening. Comfort wasn't really possible, denial just about was.

"Yea, I'm a candidate," she nodded and pushed her wet hair out of her face. "This is my first time to stand," she went on, "because there's a gold this time, so nobody minds there being girls on the sands. Have you stood before?" Had he stood for the last clutch, for the horrible greens? She wouldn't have been shocked if everyone who'd been there refused to ever stand again... and yet she supposed she would have been, really. Certainly they'd be afraid, but anyone who troubled to go out on the sands for a clutch of four small eggs must desperately want to Impress. It was worth the risk. It was worth just about any risk.

Zhierd's smile faltered a little as Layla mentioned the last clutch. "Yeah I was at the last hatching. It was my first one." He said rather softly. The memory of the last hatching wasn't a very a pretty one and he did not want a repeat. However, the chance for impression was too strong for him to not go to anymore of them. Besides, the terrible trio was something of a fluke. Honestly he was glad that he hadn't impressed any of those three and he did his best to steer clear of them.

The boy put his smile back on then. If it was Layla's first time it wouldn't do her any good for him to worry her even more. There was always a risk when you went out onto the sands but they all did it for their chance of impression. Though dwelling on what could happen was not a good idea. "That last clutch was something of a fluke though. I highly doubt this hatching will be nearly as terrifying." He paused for a second before continuing on. "You know, I honestly don't understand why most people around here don't think girls should be allowed to ride a fighting dragon. It's just crap really. I've met some girls and woman who are much more mature and able bodied then a lot of boys and men I've known."

"Yea," Layla smiled weakly and nodded, "I know... I've never seen one like it before, hopefully I won't ever again either. You expect a few injuries at a hatching, especially with a large clutch, but nothing so bad as that... Let's hope that this next one is making up for them, and nobody gets more than a bruise or two." It was easy to say that, but it wasn't easy to actually hope for it. The world was spiraling down, a bloody hatching would be just another drop down towards total chaos.

"As to girls with fighting dragons," keep distracted, "I don't really know either... My best guess that I ever thought of was that it's about breeding. Maybe when the tradition started, they needed all of the girls who had the potential to Impress to have children so that more people with potential were around. If a girl Impresses a fighting dragon, the chances of her ever having children are pretty small... So I guess that might have been a good reason once, but it's just stuck as a tradition?" She knew it wasn't like this at other Weyrs, High Reaches even had a female wingsecond with a blue dragon from what she'd heard. That would be pretty amazing. She couldn't imagine herself in such a position of command, but she could invent a story about somebody who was.

Zhierd nodded as Layla talked. What she said made sense and he had heard it before a few different times. "I can see why they wouldn't want Women on fighting dragons in that case, though you would think that we wouldn't be quite so medieval now a days. Especially since the other Weyrs are more accepting of it."

The boy studied Layla for a few moments before continuing on. She seemed really nervous, though he could understand why. "I remember how nervous I was before the last hatching. It can be kind of scary to think about." He told her. "Instead of dwelling on all of the things that could happen, just think about the dragon. What might he or she look like? Think of the bond you could have. Just try and remember why you're going to be there and what the goal is. Especially when the hatching begins. If you want you can come stand by me. I'll protect you." He gave the girl a little bit of wink.

Hopefully he could help raise her spirits. If she was going to stress about everything that was going wrong she'd end up killing herself with worry. Zhierd always thought it better to just let life take it's course and hope for the best. There really wasn't too much you could do to change things.

Layla managed a grin at that. "Thanks, I might take you up on that offer." She already had Yulu to hide behind, but there was no harm having another volunteer. The more people she could potentially hide behind or seek comfort from the better... Don't think about anything but the dragon. Good advice, advice she'd been trying to take for days. It was easier said than done though, hard to ignore the word that plague was back, to not remember what had happened at the last hatching. She'd keep trying, but she doubted she'd succeed somehow.

"I should probably go soon, though," Layla added after a moment, glancing up at the position of the sun. "I'll need to get dry and changed before my next chore block... Hate to rush off on you though, when we've finally started talking... Maybe we could hang out again sometime?" Was it alright to say that to a boy, or would he think she was after a date? Honestly she was a bit too tired and worked up to care about that right now. If she had to explain herself later, so be it.
