Does anyone in the guild have, or has had this? I currently have prenatal depression, due to the stressful situation that im in. After the baby is born, i will be going for tests to determine hormone levels and all that lovely stuff to see how long i have been effected by this.
There are a couple pages in Todays Parent Pregnancy and Childbirth, the winter 2004 edition, that explain what this is. I read it, went to my doc, and she said to see a counsillor, or deal with it (aint that fun?).
What have you guys done to get through it? What things can help?

I'm not sure about parental depression, but I have good old clinical depression. Besides meds, I find that exercise helps a lot. I know it's like the last thing you feel like doing when your down, but it can make a big differance.

I'm with Angie on this one. I never had post partem depression, but I have been a lifelong sufferer of clinical depression.
However, I am sure there are some other members who have experienced post partem depression. Just give 'em a while and I'm sure you'll get some more responses.
I wish you luck with it though. From what I hear, it can be tough and long OR mild and quick.

From what I heard stress or depression like this could be the result of family history, such as someone in your family has had this kind of thing before. Another is the stress of having your baby or the pregnancy itself. You should see a doctor rather than wait until the baby is born to do so because I've heard that if you wait and this kind of things gets worst then it could affect your baby.

I have suffered from severe depression for quite a while, and it got worse with my second pregnancy. I was pretty much ignored. I partly explained it away that if i wernt pregnant then i could leave my husband (We were doing terribly)I had lots and lots of stress, which also included a false positive on a routine hiv test at a prenatal vist (i didnt learn it was false till right before i had the baby) Ive also foundd that any birthcontrol I take also makes my depression worse. I would defiently seek the advice of a professional. A counselor may be better able to help you . Doctors seem pretty useless to me when ever theres something outside their field. All my doctor ever did was try antidepressant after another. What i do to deal with the really bad days is to find something i truely love doing, or something mindless (like gaia fishing) and just get lost in that. Eventuly youll feel a little better. even solitare on a computer has sometimes helped me. Basicly get your mind off of things for a bit.

me again I also wanted to mention that even though you're pregnant you can take anti-depressants. If you're really depressed it's better to take it and risk mild side effects than to not take it. I'm on zoloft and that works great for me. I've been on it since I gave birth to Sascha who's 2. They gave it to me for post pardum... I've had depression forever but had found other ways to control it until I gave birth. Suddenly I couldn't hold it together, I felt like just moving was too over whelming. I cried histarically for three days, then walked in to my doctors and said give me some meds. Anyway I just wanted to let you know that if you feel like you need the extra help don't be afraid to ask about meds, because there are several you can take during pregnancy and breast feeding. Good luck to you and if you ever need support pm me.

My doc wont put me on anything while pregnant, she wants me to fight through it on my own, or with a counsillor... which i understand completely, but she could try SOMETHING for it.
There is a family history of mental problems on my fathers side, from anger management to just plain crazy. lol. Depression is a fairly big one though, a lot of people are coming out of the closet now and telling me about it.
Anyways, i'll talk to my doc again about getting the tests sooner than later, but i dont think she will go for it. For some reason, she doesnt want to much at all going on in this pregnancy.

If you believe medication will help, get insistent. Don't be polite, this is your health and your baby's health you're dealing with.

I wasn't depressed during my pregnancy which is surprising because I had a history of clinical depression. After my son was born I was hit with full blown post-partum depression that I guess somewhere along the way turned into just plain old depression. After about 6 months I finally got medical insurance and went to the doctor, he put me on Celexa which I took for over a year. I got off it in late November of last year and I think I'm having a relapse. This time I don't want to be on meds and I'm looking into some alternate methods of dealing with my depression.
I'm on one of the lowest dosage birth control pill brands there are, but I think it worsens my depression. I've been on Depo, even worse.

The pill definately can cause mood swings, with me it was hell, they they realized that i cant take it because of how much it throws my system off. Mood swings 24/7, a never ending period, zits, the whole sha-bang.
