It hadn't been easy to convince L'pin to allow Yulu the use of one of his firelizards, his answer right away having been that she had her own who could do it, but through skilled asking and even the unkind use of her little Gold's ability over other dragons . . . Yulu had found herself in possession of a snappy little Green who merely glared at her while the message was attached to her back.
It was a letter to be sent back to Yulu's home Hold, High Telgar, with the recipient being a man she had dared not speak to in a long time. It had been over a Turn since they had exchanged any messages, the last one having Yulu state she was going to the Weyr to stand and her Father quickly shooting down her dreams. She'd destroyed that message shortly after getting it, having sworn to never need conversation with that man again. Yet here she was, depending on a firelizard to take a message for her, and as Yulu did her best to relay all thoughts and information to Hinalle on finding her father she wondered if this would all be in vain.
There was a good chance the man would ignore her message and send the flitt home empty handed, be that the best case scenario, or at the very worst he could send her back with a letter simply ripping Yulu to shreds one again. A look of nervous terror slowly leaked over her calm face as she finished up the last of the preparations, though she was still able to send Hinalle off without any troubles. While Yulu may have been a little nervous that the Green wouldn't even be able to find her father she had some faith in the little beast's intelligence, knowing that she and Song were from the came clutch.
It was unknown how long it would take for the message to be delivered and a return one gained, so Yulu decided it would be better to pass the weighted time outdoors and away from her own room where she could sulk. It was the middle of the day and many chores had been overlooked, what with all the eggs on the sands and people running here and there like headless wherries, so if she were to go out into the open of the Weyrbowl she'd hardly get looked over for not being productive. The little Gold on her shoulder seemed to agree with this, though the moment the pair started to move out of the barracks she quickly jumped down the collar of Yulu's shirt and out of sight.
The air was crisp and clean as she strode out into the open area, her body shivering slightly against the temperature changed and the cold hide that tried to wrap itself about her stomach for more warmth. She was certain Hinalle would be able to find her no matter where she was, Song acting as an aide there as well, so any place she picked to rest for now in her thoughts was just fine.

Tofir dried himself off vigorously and when his skin was all pink and smarting he wrapped the rough length of cloth around his hips. Cleanliness was divine, and because he'd overslept he had the entire bathing room to himself. The only thing that could have made the experience perfect would have been a private bath, rather than a communal area. Nasty things grew in communal baths. Fungi, for instance. He didn't want warts or athlete's foot or any of the other communicable diseases a person could get walking around barefoot. So he wore his sandals even to bathe and was always one to use the sluice, rather than the tubs. Closer to sanitary. He also went through more soap than any two candidates combined, but he had easy access to the stuff, having access to the healers' stores.
As he stepped outside of the humid room he was joined by Shiv, who disdained the wetness of bathing and preferred only to be oiled with floral scents. At least there'd been no vomit on his shoes when he woke this morning. That made three days in a row. A new record, Tofir thought ruefully. It was sad for a healer to have to be pleased at such a thing. And between his standards of cleanliness and Shiv's habit of puking on his boots, the leather was getting worn thin. The hatching would probably finish them off completely. Damn expensive pet, Shiver was. But hard to stay angry at, even so.
The firelizard was even more quivery than usual, and bombarded him with happy images: Song! His friend gold Song was nearby! They should go say hello! Yes? Song was around! Could we go say hello?
Tofir rolled his eyes and assured Shiv that they could go see Song, if Shiv would just tell him where she was. He also showed Shiv a picture of Yulu with an interrogative. Hopefully the blue flit would understand that his human wanted to know if Song's human was also there. If he did, he wasn't telling Tofir. He just whistled happily that he was getting what he wanted and zipped off, leaving Tofir to follow him out into the chill open air. He was going to kill the firelizard, he decided, just as the doomed blue caught sight of Song and whistled a piercing greeting.

Yulu's wanderings had somehow landed her close to the public paths, a place she avoided during the day because of the sheer amount of people lurking in and out, and she frowned as she found herself standing near where people were dropping off their items before going in to get themselves cleaned. She was about to turn and walk back, all the while questioning why her legs had lead her here while her mind wanted elsewhere to be her destination, when the mass against her stomach started to chirp happily.
"Song?"
Yulu pulled her collar out, their standard method of communication now other then the woman ripping her entire shirt off, and she moved her chin back as the gold eagerly climbed her way up the torso and out onto Yulu's shoulders. She was broadcasting an image of a familiar flitt, a pretty blue Yulu had become quite familiar with over these past few months, and it was hard to ignore the happiness Song was feeling. The little Gold was quite enamored with the blue, if that was a good word to use, though the best Yulu could equate it to was having a friend you wanted to be with very, very much.
"Is Shiv near-"
Yulu didn't have time to ask anymore as Shiv's familiar whistle broke the air near them, causing Yulu to turn and look in that general direction. . . . and clap her hand over her mouth in an attempt not to laugh. Her eyebrows and general expression gave away much of what she wanted to say anyway, the dark structures almost up into her hairline as her shoulders tensed in an effort to keep her mouth closed. There were muffled snorts from behind her hand, leading her to almost have to cup another one over to just stay calm.

Shiver darted to Yulu's shoulder and just skimmed it before zipping around the back of her head to return to Tofir. Tofir waved one hand to ward off his blue firelizard's excited fluttering. When he was shirtless he didn't really want Shiv to land on him. Those claws were sharp. Very clean, but sharp. He already had a crosshatch of shallow white scars on his shoulders from his flit's careless take-offs and landings. Hardly deforming. No one would even notice them until summer, when he would tan darkly from time spent working outside shirtless.
"Yes, I see Song. And Yulu, too," Tofir said to his firelizard. He turned his firelizard-warding into an actual wave of greeting while his other hand strayed surreptitiously to the knot he'd tied in his towel, checking that he wasn't about to lose his covering. It would be a little too much exposure for him to be comfortable with.
Of course, Yulu looked fit to burst with laughter. His eyebrows twitched toward a frown and he glanced down quickly to make sure he hadn't managed to miss something odd and funny, like a smear of blue paint across his abdomen. Aside from winter paleness, nothing. He wasn't about to be embarrassed by his fair skin. It was nice skin. It kept his insides in and everything else out.
"What? Do I detect awe at my magnificent physique?" he called to her. His towel was secure, it was safe to move. So, with a smirk and raised eyebrows he deliberately put both hands on his hips and flexed. Over a turn of attending candidate workouts hadn't exactly left him ripped, but there was muscle definition.
"Impressive, eh?" Song whistled in what could be interpreted as appreciation, but could have just as easily been something else.

Song moved as if she were going to give follow to the sudden streak of blue, her body leaning against Yulu's shoulder and her wings spreading slightly, though she did nothing more than that as she rocked back into her seated position and sent a small greeting back to her friend. Blue Shiver should come over where Song is and be in her person's arms, so Song could move down and they could cuddle like others often did! Her person wouldn't mind, her person also liked Shiver!
"Oh yes, quite so. Of I were any less of a man I'd be throwing myself at your feet right now, begging for you to take me and make me yours."
Yulu chuckled as she drew closer to the pair, Tofir's state of half-dress nothing to her in her eyes and mind. She'd seen people wearing less while bathing together at the hall, and here at the Weyr it seemed bound to happen that no one cared for the modesty most people would like to possess. She wanted to respond in turn to the flexing with her own little challenge, her hands rolling her sleeves up to show her own toned arms. She bent them easily into a matching flex, muscle rippling gently, and Yulu was rather proud of her strength despite being such a small figure.
She would never admit she was proud to be strong for a woman.
"Of course though, with my own muscles I could easily take you off your feet instead. How about you let me carry you around like a princess, since you're obviously in a skirt?"

Shiv let Song know that he was not going to be held by her person, thank you. His person would be hurt if he did that. He didn't even let Tofir hold him in his arms like that. Would Song want his person's feelings to be hurt? No, no. Better to fly and be in the air. It was nice in the air. And very fast. She had bigger wings. She could probably fly faster than him. It would be fun. More fun than cuddling.
Tofir had no idea what was going through his firelizard's tiny mind as he zipped about and turned somersaults in the air. He could only assume he was showing off for Song, which seemed a little out of character for the blue creature, but not completely. He knew that Shiv was fond of Song, since she was one of the firelizards he saw on a regular basis. Whatever it was, it wasn't doing any harm.
"Any time, baby," Tofir quipped. He gave her an obvious once-over that ended in him giving her an upwards nod of approval. Then he laughed. They both knew that was never going to happen.
His laughter continued when she flexed back at him and offered to carry him about like a princess. "Maybe some other time. I really think I'll have to practice my curtsy before we indulge in that little fiction."
He whistled to Shiv, who was always delighted when his human attempted to communicate like a civilized creature, even if he was incomprehensible. He had learned, however, that when Tofir whistled he wanted him to come to him, and leave off what he was doing. A shame. He was enjoying showing Song all the delights of flight. But there was nothing saying he had to stay with his person for very long. He just had to come over initially, and for that his human would send happy thoughts to him, which was worth it.
"What's going on with you? I haven't seen you much, with all the recent excitement." Excitement was one way to put it.

"Liar, you saw me at the touching a few days ago, or were you making eyes at Layla instead? I didn't know you liked the young type so much, perhaps I should try and hook you too up together. She's one to need a big strong partner."
Yulu chuckled a bit, most of her mirth stemming from their banter back and forth about being a princess or being carried. Yulu had been the one first in Tofir's arms, if only because he wouldn't let her walk that time, and the youth found herself wondering if she could actually lift and carry him. She probably could if it were on her back or over her shoulders, but the idea of carrying him like a princess was certainly out of her league. He'd probably break her arms too before actually letting her hold him up, what with his pride and all.
The laughter stopped though as thoughts turned to the task that she has started earlier that day with the sending of Hinalle off to the Hold, and although Yulu wasn't often one to openly share her private business she had come to find that Tofir was someone she could easily speak with. It may have been because he was a fellow Healer, albeit one of a different path, that any information she often got based on news from the Hall or Holds was shared quickly with him.
"But in all seriousness. . . I've been trying to look into a few rumors. I know it's got nothing to do with me, with any of us that should have our minds on the dragons, but for some reason the Healer inside just can't shake this horrible feeling. With rumors of that Plague outbreak at High Reaches and our Riders there I find myself unable to sit idle anymore, and I'm forced to do what a guy's gotta do, even when he doesn't want to."
Yulu had never been one to be idle in the first place, though her taking a direct hand in gather information this time was something new. Direct approaches were often the best ones, and if she found she couldn't get anything from her Father then she'd try the Healer Hall. Someone there was bound to at least give her some shreds of information.

"Layla? She's a little young for me. You want to hook me up with someone, try for someone closer to my age. Not that I need your help." The response was automatic, but almost immediately Tofir ran one hand through his springy black hair. It was getting too long. "A few days ago? That's it? Really? It feels like so much longer."
And it did. A lot that had happened in the last few days. There was the Touching itself, of course, but that was a relatively tame sort of event. He'd taken lots of notes, though he'd not really had much time to sift through them since then, and so in that respect it had been productive. He'd also touched the eggs, of course. That had been an interesting experience. Not exciting or earth-shaking, but interesting. And maybe some of his notes would serve his research well. If he ever got the chance to sit down and do anything with him.
After that there'd come the far more distressing news that the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman were quarantined at High Reaches Weyr, as were Iva and a few other Weyr higher-ups. The quarantine was due to a declaration made by the High Reaches Weyrwoman that the plague had returned. He still wasn't sure what to make of it, but as someone who worked in the infirmary more often than anyplace else as part of his candidate duties he'd gotten to listen to a lot of concerned folks come in and ask if it was likely to spread. He'd done his share of telling everyone that there was nothing to worry about, but with each person that asked he felt more and more worried.
"I know what you mean about the plague," Tofir said. "It's been bothering me, too. A lot, actually, considering it's all I've heard about from the first the news reached us." He sighed. "So, I need clothing, but if you've got time to chat I'd love to. and Shiv has been practically attacking me with thoughts of how nice it is to see Song again."

"I'll follow you out then, and we'll talk on the way. It's good to get the opinions of another healer on all of this gossip, as I'm finding it difficult to separate fact from rumor at this point in time. Everyone seems to have their own opinion on the events at High Reaches as well as that typical 'I know someone with Plague' bit that always follows around a chance epidemic."
Yulu shifted her weight onto her back foot, allowing her body to turn and let Tofir pass beside her to head back to the barracks. It was a bit too chilly for anyone to be standing around wearing next to nothing, and if they were going to have a proper conversation Yulu preferred that her partner in such an event be fully dressed. Seeing anyone without a shirt on brought out the healer in her, the manner of looking over every inch of flesh for signs of malnutrition or whatever else came to mind. Tofir was lucky that Yulu didn't think to pick over him, or he could be pretty sure she'd find something to poke about.
Speaking of poking. . .
"I can't help but notice you didn't scar from the time Song took a bite out of you. What did you use to prevent that, or did she not break the skin as we thought she had?"

"Sounds good," Tofir agreed, his hand straying one last time to make sure his towel was secure. "And trust me, we have more rumor than fact to go on when it comes to the plague."
As he walked back to the barracks, Tofir looked over his shoulder to talk to Yulu until she caught up once more. "Someone did have the sense to tell the head healer in the infirmary what they know, and so whenever we don't have to reassure people that if there is plague it hasn't come to Telgar everyone's reading the records from last time. You don't want to know how much plague lore I have permanently stuck in my head."
Actually, a lot of it Tofir wished he didn't know. Infectious diseases, such as plagues, were exactly the sort of healing that he despised. It turned his stomach nervous and actually made his hands shake and his heart race. Airborne was the worst, but only by a small margin. He was only able to function by constantly lying to himself to convince himself that everyone was cleaner and more conscientious than they actually were. In a setting where plague was a real possibility, he wasn't sure that he wouldn't find himself locked in his office, waiting it out like a coward. Healer training went deep, but it had been healer training that had instilled his obsession with hygiene and contamination in him to begin with. He truly didn't want to put it to the test, which lesson had been more deeply ingrained.
"What I wish they'd do, even though it would probably cause a bit of a panic and present no small inconvenience, is call everyone in to be examined for signs of plague. I think I could recognize it in my sleep at this point." Could. Did. Had nightmares about it.
"That way we could just tell everyone they have a clean bill of health and to stop worrying about High Reaches." And that way Tofir could stop worrying, too. "But what do I know? I'm just a mindhealer who's trained to anticipate how people will react to certain stimuli. Like rumors of plague."
Shiv fluttered around his head and then around Yulu's. He was bored by this conversation. All Tofir ever thought about anymore was people being sick and it was boring. And frightening. It made Tofir very frightened, and Shiv couldn't do anything about it, which made him unhappy. He said as much to Song as he flew around Yulu's head.
Tofir was relieved when Yulu brought up another subject. He glanced down at his chest, unmarked by firelizard teeth. "No, I didn't do anything to keep it from scarring. I was mostly interested in making sure it didn't get infected. Seems Song just didn't bite as deeply as I'd initially thought."

"I could have told you that you were overreacting to her bite, its not like she's some kind of vicious attacker. I don't think other than that incident I have ever seen her be aggressive towards anyone or anything. She still hasn't even tried to fly once, and I'm not sure if that will affect her come the time for her to Rise. It would be silly to watch a mating flight that consisted of flits running on the ground."
Song seemed to understand that the conversation had been turned back to her, her mood moving from the distressed she felt over Shiver's unhappiness to a general pleased. She tried to send some of those feelings over to Shiver as she chirped at him, wanting him still to come closer to her side and spend more time with her and her person. Shiver's person was walking too fast and didn't seem to like being undressed, much like Song's own person, so the Gold believed that maybe being with Yulu would make the Blue happier...for the moment anyway.
"And anyway, back to talk of the plague - I wonder what will actually happen should we find outbreaks. From what I understand and was told by the Head Healer we would all go into a state of quarantine, the healthy moving away from the diseased, but is there really such a place for us to go to? Sending people to Holds seems like adding more wood to an open blaze, and certainly a hold cannot support several dragons. I've sent word back to my . . . contact in the Hold, to see if anything has seriously started to develop there."
Yulu had paused for a moment as she spoke, carefully picking her words lest she drop one that could lead to a bad mood later. She was trying to keep her mind off the message and its possible response anyway, so she needed to keep talking and just keep going. She tried to recall all that Tofir had said before she started speaking again, and her brain fell upon the words 'plague lore'.
"I actually do want to know about what you know over plague, to see if our knowledge differs from one another. You may know some facts that I have never even heard of, or we both might know different methods of detection and treatment.. . .though there is no current cure for whatever may be coming."

An image of Song slinking along the ground, albeit at a rapid rate, while her confused pursuers tried to decide whether they should give chase aerially or on the ground flashed through Tofir's mind and he smirked. Not exactly the picture evoked when people normally thought of a firelizard or dragon rising to mate. It seemed less like the subject of a passionate ballad and more like it would make a comedic farce. Maybe he would compose something along those lines to help the time pass until the hatching, and to get his mind off of the plague. He could present it to Yulu as a joke, and then they could offend all decent ears singing it.
"It could be an interesting spectacle," Tofir argued. "By the way, isn't she nearly old enough for that to be a possibility?"
He knew how old Shiv was down to the day, but since Song wasn't his firelizard he wasn't so clear on her specifics. He did know that she'd been very young the day she bit him, which was a large part of why he forgave her so readily for it. The rest was that she was simply too endearing to hold a grudge against.
Even Shiv seemed to feel that way, as he was willing to fly very close to Yulu to appease her. He knew she wanted him to join her and land somewhere on Yulu, but that just wasn't going to happen. Probably. Not unless she forced him. Not that he knew anything about that. His experiences with golds was limited enough that Song was the only one he'd encountered, and she'd never pulled rank on him before. He might not have even been aware that it was a possibility. He was happy to be as near her as he was. He whistled happily to let her know that.
Tofir winced at Yulu's abrupt return to the plague. He'd have been content to let the matter drop. He hated even thinking of it. The fact that he had a perfect memory for written things made him invaluable. He could quote page after page of statistics and facts, and the other healers could appreciate that much, but they failed to appreciate how very much he didn't want to know all of this. Clearly Yulu couldn't appreciate it either. And she should know better.
"I was under the impression that the quarantine at High Telgar was brief, and only a few cases were diagnosed. I really don't know if there were any of symptoms associated with the Telgar Plague presented in those diagnosed, or if this is a new strain. Personally, I'm hoping this is a threat that remains highly localized. We don't need another widespread plague." He swallowed and stepped into the boys' dormitory, walking to the trunk at the foot of his cot, where his clothes were all stored, packed and folded neatly after having been cleaned to within an inch of their lives.
"What I know about the Telgar Plague is what every healer knows. I just have a lot more individual accounts stuffed into my brain. Quite honestly, I'd rather be rid of them. Someone else can be their walking, talking sourcebook, as far as I'm concerned." Not that he'd been offered a choice, really. "Ask me a question, I'll try to answer, but please don't ask me to just regurgitate everything I know."
There was a slight hint of pleading as he knelt in front of his trunk and selected his clothes for the day. Please, could they not talk about this. He tossed his outfit choice onto his cot and looked to see if Yulu had decided to stop following him at the threshold, or if he'd need to remind her to turn around or something.

Yulu did actually have the decency enough to have her back turned while Tofir was dressing, part of her mind telling her that she did have to turn around as some people were modest, though it didn't mean she walked away for him to come and find her when he was done. She merely stood there and waited for the youth to finish dressing himself all the while mulling over what he had said about not being too comfortable to speak about the plague. Getting answers from someone who would rather talk about anything else in the world seemed like it would be too much of a daunting task for her to try this early in the day, with her mind distracted, so she did indeed decide to try and jump the subject once more.
Tofir had seemed pleased when she talked about Song, and they hadn't seen each other since the Touching, so perhaps. . .
"What did you think of the eggs, now that you actually have had a chance to get on the sands with them? I watched you touch all of them save the Gold, and I know you well enough to know that you probably made a stack of notes based on everything that happened."
She had her own record based on what she felt and what she saw happening out on the sands, but Yulu figured this was as good a conversation as any to get Tofir talking without seeming so uneasy. Dragon eggs and the hatching had to be a relatively tame conversation, and both of them would do well discussing it.
"I should start by saying I'm uncertain to Impress."

Dressed, Tofir dropped onto his cot, one leg folded beneath him and the other out in front of him. Yulu was welcome to accommodate herself similarly, but not on his cot. There really wasn't room unless personal space was going to be violated. Tofir would probably survive, but Yulu really wasn't the sort to invite incidental contact, and for his part, Tofir had just bathed. He wasn't over-eager to touch people either.
Shiv knew he was an exception. He fluttered to the bed and draped his front half over Tofir's extended foot before his human could pull on his boots. Drape being a relative term, of course. He rested his foreclaws delicately on Tofir's stockinged foot and sat back on his haunches. A tentative sort of contact, but there nonetheless. He was relaxed here. This was familiar territory, and better yet it was dry territory. He liked that. Flicking his tail, he whistled to Song that she should find someplace soft to sit because it was nice to sit.
"That's what you're going to start with?" Tofir asked. "Shall I reassure you that of course you'll Impress, and that any dragon would be lucky to have you? It's completely true, of course, at least that second part. I really can't make any guarantees on the first, I'm afraid."
He jiggled his foot to annoy Shiver, who whistled sharply at him, and then he continued speaking and actually answered the question Yulu had put to him about the eggs. "The eggs were...big? Warm? Hardening nicely? What I don't know about dragon eggs could fill volumes." He made a noise that was half sigh, half snort.
"But they were interesting. I don't think I was as strongly effected by them as most of the other candidates. Nevertheless, I did, as you say, take notes. They're all up here." He tapped his temple to indicate where they were. "Indelibly seared into my oh-so-special skull."

"Somehow hearing you say that you think I'm certain to Impress doesn't exactly make me wanna jump up and down and believe you, since we both know if a dragon did happen to look my way it would probably not be for any good reasons. It's not that I don't have confidence that I couldn't take care of such a thing, that I couldn't be a proper dragonrider and join the ranks without issue, it's more or less that with my personality and my. . . style, a dragon would be hard pressed to pick issues over normalcy. You'll Impress long before I will even though, if I recall, you said you didn't want to."
That had been a throwback to their first conversation, a rather disastrous event that had ended with Yulu stomping away and taking her aggression out on anything that she could get her hands on. The vegetables in the kitchen had been chopped very finely that night, almost into slivers that couldn't be used. Yulu wondered if that's why people called her back in to do it several nights later, or the running joke about her skill with her hands came from. Either way she hated the kitchen, it wasn't a place for a guy like her to be wasting away amongst all the ladies and children.
"The eggs were actually doing pretty well for a first clutch, all things considered. None of them seemed to be oddly shaped or have any discolored spots, like it hadn't formed properly and was hardening at a different rate. All are of a decent size too, sure to have good and healthy dragonets."
Yulu knew only a bit about dragon eggs thanks to her Father, his lessons pounded in her head. While she had never gone on with him when he went out to check various dragons in the different areas, she was always there to listen to him when he returned, ever so sure to commit everything he said to memory. They was always a pop-quiz coming directly behind whatever it was he told her, and failure resulted in a usually painful form of punishment.
"I've got to admit that there were some eggs that swayed me a little, a few of them I couldn't hardly understand. It was so interesting to find that they could affect emotions in the way that they were, the reactions on people's faces more than enough proof."
Yulu wasn't going to mention how she felt with that Golden Egg. She had hoped Tofir had not seen her touch it, nor how close she'd come to tears.
