The rain pelted down in the foot hills of the mountains. The blue-black mare nuzzled the slowly cooling body of the older mare. "Please..." she whispered quietly. "Please don't leave me..."

The mare snapped her head up and looked around the misty area surrounding her. "Help...?" she called out quietly to the emptiness. "Help..."

Shivering with cold and realizing the futility, she slipped under an outcropping to shelter her from the pelting rain until morning.

He headed slowly to the calling. His head was low and his ears pinned back a bit as if to shield himself from the rain tho it was futile. He was lost in his own thoughts as usual, just letting the feeling guide him. When he was close enough he heard the soft cries of another, blinking a bit out of his wandering his head lifted up, ears perking. It wasnt often he heard cries for help, as that usually meant they werent close enough to death. It was only when he drew closer that he saw her, and the other she was calling help for.

His heart sank for her, seeing how hopeless she was, and knowing he wouldnt be able to help. He hadnt ever really faced such a situation, so he wasnt too sure how to react. His colorful presence he was sure would be hard to miss as he came closer, his head lowered a bit as he quietly came to their sides, looking over the dying one with firm but warm eyes before they shifted to the darker younger mare.

"You should go... you shouldnt have to see this...," his voice sounded softly against the rain.

Her eyes snapped open from the doze she'd slipped into. She blinked at the large male. "But...I...Where did you come from?" She'd been sure she'd scouted the area earlier, mostly worried about predators and found no traces of anyone.

"I...I don't have anywhere to go...my dam..." she said haltingly shivering from the cold and the odd calmness of the stallion. She fidgeted and scooted back further under the ledge wondering if she could disappear.

He let out a heavy sigh as his ears docked more. Coming closer he moved a wing over her a bit to shelter her more from the cold before moving another wing over the dying mare. He wished he could tell her, it would be alright. He wished he could calm her sadness and her fears but he only settled himself a bit, his voice still smooth and low.

"What happened...," he asked. Normally not caring at all, he didnt like to get attached to those that were dying and maybe ignorance was better than knowing.

The mare shrugged. "I don't know. We were heading to a grazing spot we knew a little higher in the foothills when she just," she trailed off for a moment. "She just went to her knees. I knew she was old, but I never thought." she leaned against him a bit taking comfort in his warmth.

"I don't know where to go, or what to do...I've never been alone before, and I don't know where my sire is, I never met him." she stamped her foreleg staring at the ground.

"I'm Deneb, by the way...like the star."

He was quiet as he looked still to the older mare, ears docking a bit. His wing folded still over Deneb to cover her from the rain. He was the last person to give someone on advice. He was the last person to tell someone what to do or where to go.

"Im requiem.... song of death..." his words trailed off. That was the shorter version of it really but that was all she needed to know at the moment. He didnt remember really meeting either of his parents, the only thing he knew of parents at all were how Starlet dealt with hers, which seemed to be a world of problems.

He lay there for a while, just quiet. Mulling things over, his mind sometimes just wandering until it was blank. "Well...your welcome to roam with me..." he offered softly. Not really sure if thats what he was wanting to do or not, but he knew better than to just leave the female here alone in the cold dark.

Deneb looked up at him. "Your name...sounds...ominious..." she said trailing off. She stood absorbed in her own thoughts only breaking off when he made his offer. "I...are you...?" she stopped letting her thoughts collect watching the falling rain.

When it began to look as if it was going to stop for the night she finally looked back up at him. "I'd like that, I think." she said quietly. "I promise not to be a bother, and once I find somewhere I feel at home...I'll let you be." she said giving him a faint smile.

He didnt mind sitting there a long while, just letting her gather herself. It wasnt as if he had anywhere else to be and he couldnt feel another calling right now. He finally shifted to look at her before getting up, he might as well warn her now tho before it cause any issues later.

"There are times, where I have to go to the dying, just like tonight. Ill let you know if thats where Im headed, so you can stay behind if you wish," his voice was low as he turned to leave. Of course... he didnt always know when it would happen, but he could try to tell her at least. His wings flexed a bit to shake the water free and he stopped a moment to stretch. His massive wings and body popped and snapped a bit before he settled again to look behind him to see if she was going to follow.

Deneb watched him stretch and settle himself before carefully stepping out in the clearing sky. She took a deep breath and moved over to the body of her dead mother. She gently touched her nose to the still form and whispered a quiet prayer, before lifting her head and letting out a breath.

She slowly turned toward the angeni and trailed after him. "I'm ready." she said. She slowly made her way down the gentle slope letting him lead the way.

Her whispered prayer and her tender, sad moment almost brought him to tears himself. He couldnt remember a time when he himself had a family and in those moments he wondered if it were a good or bad thing. The pleasure her mother must have brought her during their life together, or the pain of their seperation, which was greater, was it worth it in the end? He paused a moment, blinking clear his thoughts as they started to consume him again. He nodded to her words finally and turned to lead her away from this place, if at least somewhere warmer. Tho he led her quietly, it made him think about himself in a way. Was this why he was so distant from people? Because in the end it was nothing but pain? Finally, he couldnt help but to ask, his voice carried to her as he stopped and looked back at her a bit.

"Was it worth it?" he inquired, as if really wanting to know. Maybe seeming more like a child in his question more than trying to pry or seem bitter. "Is it better to love and lost, or never loved at all?" he used the old phrase he had heard before.

Deneb tilted her head towards the Angeni. She blinked confused at such a question and then quietly considered. "I think...I think it was better to have spent time with her. To have loved her and know she loved me. Its why we form families, find mates, bring foals into the world. Its better to have loved then to be alone for the rest of your life."

She nodded satisfied with her answer. "I think life would be pretty empty, sort of meaningless if you were determined to spend it alone with no hope of ever finding even a temporary port in the turbulent storm we call life."

He watched her eagerly for an answer. As if this would be the answer to all of life's questions. For some reason her answer put his heart at ease. That in the end... at least something was worth whatever pain it caused. Sure, she was only one, but he valued her words. Her words almost seemed like a story, and he was even getting lost in the few she spoke. He felt like curling up and listening to her talk, to go on about love... about family. When she nodded and came to an end, his ears flicked at something. Even something... temporary.

He looked forward again, not even really sure if he wanted to move again. For once, he didnt want to move. He didnt want to wander, to be lost. He looked around a moment before seeing the spark of the fire of his own herd. They had gone much farther than he had realized and he set off to that light.

Knowing she would follow, he kept his deliberate pace until they reached a small, comfortable clearing between the forest trees. There, along the edges were the rest of the herd. Mostly male, but almost all of them with a mate. He looked over them slowly... ears moving. Maybe he wasnt as alone as he thought. Maybe, just maybe... this was his port.

Deneb followed the stallion into the clearing. Although not as shy as other members of her race she still felt slightly nervous around so many new faces all at once.

She lightly stepped around the other males before finding somewhere quiet away from the bulk of the group but still near the angeni, not that she was worried about being around so many stallions, but more that he was just a comforting presence.

She sighed tiredly and settled herself on the cool grass not minding that it was still wet from the nights rain. It felt cool against her skin and helped ease some of the hurt inside.

For the most part, everyone was rather quiet. Some were even asleep. He followed her lead and settled as well, shifting to lay down. His massive wings settled to his side, one set simply shifted to cover them both, tho the act was mindless on his part. Maybe it was a simple subconscious move to protect her or to add more shelter. He looked over everything, his voice quiet.

"I didnt even realize... how many of us there are. It feels like just yesterday I was alone... and that Anon and Kaim showed up looking for a home..," his voice trailed off before he looked at her. "You are welcome to stay as long as you like. Most of us come and go when we like. Sometimes without even a word spoken, just the comfort of each other is enough."

It was as if he was talking to himself as well, coming around to what he really had, that this really was a family of sorts. And that he wouldnt trade it for the world.

Deneb settled under the giant wing. It still surprised her how warm it was under them. Seemed odd for something made of feathers, but considering that birds didn't freeze--

She let that train of thought trail off when the big stallion started to talk. She nodded slowly taking in his words. "Thank you." she laughed quietly then something she thought she wouldn't do for a long while now. "And I understand what you mean. You have an understanding, an understanding that a family has, that while sometimes your apart, you all still care about each other."

She shifted slightly and let her entire body relax. "Thank you, Requiem." she said softly. "And goodnight." she said before finally allowing herself to drift off into a light sleep.
