"Yo! Marcillus!" The voice called from behind a stack of boxes and Marci perked, sticking her head out the door.
"Yes? What do you need?" She called, a box already in her arms.
"This stuff all needs to be packed away on the shelves. Everything goes in the labelled holes - don't screw up or you'll have to redo it all. Top to bottom." The man's voice was stern as he spoke and then he turned, leaving the Candidate a moment later.
She'd been tasked with organizing this spare equipment room for the barracks and it was stuffed full of the most random things - and in utter disarray. But, as she wasn't particularly strong - fast, sure, but strong not so much - it was slow going hefting all the boxes up into the proper places. More then once she had had to empty most of a crate then refill it piece by piece so that it wasn't so heavy.
"I'll get it done, sir!" She smiled at him before she set her box down inside the room, adjusted her cap so it wasn't c**k-eyed, and moved to push the new stack in with a huff. She had to labour at it a moment before she leaned in enough to get it moving.

"Need a hand?"
A harsh voice came from the door the man had just left, another figuring now standing in the doorway, their shoulder leaning against the frame. It was a fellow candidate, probably one a bit older than the girl in the room was, and they seemed to be watching the interaction taking place with relative disinterest. Perhaps the offer had only come as a means of getting out of other work, but no one would really know unless further conversation was had.
Yulu, for her part, wasn't going to repeat herself.

Marcillus jumped at the unexpected voice and she looked over, peeking out from behind the stack of boxes she was trying to manhandle into position, "Uh... if you're willing? I can manage, though. Just might take me a while..." She grunted as she put her weight into it once more and shoved the stack another foot or two forward.

"I don't offer for the sake of offering."
Yulu took a few steps in and easily lifted a box, a slight sound of surprise escaping her lips. She didn't think so much work here at the Weyr would actually start to pay off in terms of strength, but it seemed like it was a true thing. All those long hours of shoveling and lifting only served her well, and part of Yulu wondered if the Candidatemaster made everyone do this things in an attempt to strengthen them up for dragons. Anyone who was weak certainly could not care so well for such a beast.
"Just tell me what needs done and I'll help you get it done faster. Tasks like this are usually given to the new people in an effort to make or break them, and from the looks of you it could probably go either way."
There was a small snort of judgment as Yulu looked this stranger in the room up and down, the box in her arms shifting upward as though not to leave any weight on the area around her hips. It looked as though she were wearing a thick belt, or was pudgy around her waist.

Marcillus inctinctively stepped back when Yulu came forward to grab a box, nodding as she cast her gaze to the side, "I'm supposed to organize this storage locker. There's labelled shelves and cubby-holes." She pursed her lips as she cleared the way for the door and tilted her head to the side. This was a task to measure her worthiness?
Well... the other person had offered help... "Isn't you helping.... against that 'do or die' mentality? I, mean, thank-you for your help! But doesn't that lower my regard with our Supervisors?" She seemed intent on maintaining a good image from the tone of her voice and fiddled her hands before her, "I know I'm not particularly strong... but I'll get it done, one way or another, because they asked me to."

"I generally don't care what our higher ups have to say, at least not this close to the hatching period. There are eggs on the sands and short of a brawl they won't deny anyone the chance to stand, since they don't want a repeat of the last event."
Yulu shifted the box she held in order to get a better look at the label on it, and once she found its match on the shelf she quickly deposited it before looking to pick up another one. She had no real motives for helping this girl out today, other than not doing her own sets of chores, so there wasn't a need for conversation. What aid would come her way of knowing about this person, other than another face she knew?
"I take it you're new here though, as I don't remember you around here. I'm pretty good with faces and yours is one I can't place."

"But they wouldn't want someone who's not appropriate for the role, either." She replied quietly, tilting her head to the side, "What was the last event? I've heard murmurs here and there but nothing's been said outright and it's rude to poke around."
Marcillus nodded at the question of her recent arrival, "Yes. I was Searched not too long ago. I'm an Apprentice Runner. My name is Marcillus. Pleasure to meet you!" Setting her box down, she moved over to properly greet the other Candidate, "Sorry for not introducing myself sooner... I wasn't expecting the help."

"The name's Yulu, Senior Apprentice Healer with focus on trauma."
Yulu shook the hand that was offered to her quickly, the box in her arms only shifted for a moment in order to give her a free hand, though as soon as the shake was over the box was moved back down and Yulu turned to put it on the shelf. As she moved the little bump around her waist seemed to shift as well, slithering slowly further up her torso as if to get away from the pressure and movements. Yulu didn't seem fazed.
"As for what happened it's not rude to ask around about it. They Weyr lists it as a point of shame and seems to like pointing out that fact every chance they get, so I'm rather surprised you hadn't heard. The 'event' as everyone seems to call it was actually the last hatching, in which there were only three greens on the sands, original four. The last one went between, screaming the whole way, and the others ran rivers of blood before they Impressed."

"Oh! A healer!" Marcillus grinned at that, clearly impressed, "That must be a difficult profession... Blood and bone and all that.... I don't have the stomach for it." She laughed softly, obviously embarassed by her inability to deal with blood.
She'd been about to respond when the bump, well, slithered and the girl's brow shot up in a look curious surprise, "Your... uhm. Baby? Seems active. I didn't know they let pregnant Candidates stand..." Yulu didn't look pregnant but maybe she was one of those people who carried the baby weight on their hips rather than out on the stomach? The slither was awfully odd too... She pursed her lips in confusion, not sure what else to say.

"I'm not pregnant. It's a firelizard who just happens to prefer keeping herself away from the eyes of others that's moving around underneath my shirt."
Yulu frowned at the sheer stupidity she had just heard, hoping her ears had played her for a fool and she was merely imagining this girl calling her pregnant. Did she not know anything at all about children, or basic human make-up? It wouldn't be surprising, considering she had jsut said she had no stomach for things involving blood and guts, but general human anatomy? Seriously?
To prove that she wasn't making things up Yulu pulled the collar of her tunic away from her neck, allowing a little golden head to poke itself up and through. The flitt had beautiful blue-green eyes, her mood clearly calm and humorous, and the moment Song turned and laid her gaze on Marcillus she let out a small chirp.
"This is Song."

"Well I thought it was an odd kind of thing for pregnancy... but that sounds better then 'your stomach is twisting in odd shapes'. I'm sorry!" Flushing, because she could fairly feel the thoughts between the words, she turned away and promptly began lifting the boxes and trying her (slow) best to put them in their place.
She did, however, stop when the little golden head poked out and she gasped in delight. It was so cute! "Song?" Shoving the box into its place, she padded over and leaned forward, poking out a finger to waggle it at the golden flit, "And she's a gold! Aren't those really rare and hard to find? I've seen lots of green and blue firelizards but... she's so pretty!"

"Yeah, her name is Song. She was a gift, so I got lucky in terms of the egg potluck."
Yulu pulled her collar out a bit more as Song moved from inside her shirt to her shoulder, her eyes swirling at the sight of this new person. She certainly wasn't someone Song had seen before, not blue Shiver's person at all! Where was Shiver and his person, the people her person seemed to like the most?
That question popped into Yulu's mind along with a massive amount of images, though Yulu dismissed them all one after another by thinking of the girl before her and the work they had to do together. Song seemed a bit disappointed by all of this, a little chirp escaping her beak, though she quickly looked up as a wagging finger came closer to her body.
What was this strange new person doing?! A threat to her person perhaps, or wanting to be friends? Song didn't know!
"I haven't seen many other Golds as well save for this little one, but I'm rather content with that. She's special in her own way, and I'm sure I'd love her all the same regardless of the color of her hide."

Inching her finger forward as the firelizard paused in confusion, she tried stroking the little gold's head. However, she stopped quickly when Yulu spoke once more, "I- I didn't mean to say you would.... my apologies, Yulu. I only meant that she was a pretty flit." Fidgeting, she backed a few steps away then noded and returned to her work.
"I'm sorry... I need to get this chore done. She's a wonderful firelizard, I meant no disrespect."

" . . .what the hell is wrong with you? Were you dropped on your head as a child or something?"
Yulu couldn't really believe just how this person in front of her was behaving, acting all normal and spoiled at one moment and then at the other cowering away like she was some struck dog. It irked her to see someone act this way, almost the exact same way she would have acted where she back at her home, and the frown on her lips almost turned into a snarl of displeasure as she spat out the words.
"If you want to touch Song go ahead and touch her, she's not going to bite. If you want to ask me things, go ahead and ask me. Your meek attitude is going to get you stomped all over here at this Weyr, and not just by people like me."
She hadn't meant to snap back, but Yulu wasn't going to stand here and just watch this person flinch and whimper like a kicked animal. It was....disgusting, but only because it reminded her so much of her childhood. . . were it possible.

Marcillus winced as if struck by the leading comment, shaking her head as she continued to work at maneuvering a box into an opening that was barely big enough. She didn't say anything, however, falling into the pattern such speech inspired. Going so far as to shy away from Yulu when the other continued, the Candidate shook her head as she finally forced the box into its place. "I'm sorry..."
At a loss of what else to say, she stood before the other, waiting for inevitable tongue lashing that came when people disapproved of her. She hadn't even known this person an hour yet and they were already telling her she wasn't good enough! It stung her and she stepped back, gaze down. She'd been trying to be considerate... attentive and appropriate.... had even thought this one might not mind her - Yulu certainly seemed the type to take charge and Marcillus instinctively fell into step with such a lead.
"I don't mind orders... And I don't want to bother you. I'm sorry..." She pursed her lips, swaying from side to side as if unable to decide whether she should move or remain still. "They say I wouldn't be Standing if there wasn't a Gold egg on the Sands... that a woman's place is not with a dragon... and all these other things on what they expect of a woman. Is it so wrong to want to live up to those expectations?" She spoke softly, as if trying to justify her meekness.
