He really liked wearing the winter cloak outside whenever the weather was chilly, the warmth of the furs wrapping around his body like a full, portable blanket, and as Panata shuffled out into the open Weyrbowl he was more than thankful for them. The air had been growing colder during the day, almost unbearable at night, leaving much to be desired in the want of warmth for all who dwelt in the Weyr.
All the creatures about the Weyr were starting to show the effects as well, many beasts in the stables restless and growing longer coats. Even the normally energetic firelizards were staying where there was warmth, Panata's own pressed against his ribs beneath his many layers. He was certain that this had to be his little Green's first winter season, his Brown's second, but for the three of them it was the first time they would truly experience the cold.
The sky was bright and clear above them as they shuffled out, the gray color a hint of the freezing temperatures yet to come that night, and Panata glanced up towards the hazy sun in an effort to tell just what time it may be. Instead of noticing the sun however, it was another golden object that caught his attention. Something massive and beautiful - a dragon perhaps?

Amelia was decked out in winter furs as well, her hood and sleeves edged if fluffy, pepper-coloured fur. Her breath misted in the air as she turned about, looking into the sky with a sort of longing pride. The goldrider had her hands up but they weren't pressed to her lips, instead they cradled a small pouch. It was warm to the touch and misted a little bit, keeping her hands warm.
Around her, there were three smaller forms that circled and played, chasing the occasional snowflake that drifted down. Above, with the gold shape, two other smaller shapes danced in the wake of her passing, bringing her total of flits to five.
Above, the swish of wings and rumble of an annoyed gold warned off the troublesome flits as Sharath experimented with banking. She'd mastered glides fairly easily and had taken to working for wings to develop the muscle more fully. It was quick, really, and she was eager to take her rider aloft but that required mastering flight.
Which, of course, resulted in frequent practice and exercise - something Amelia encouraged, even in the chill, so long as it wasn't too cold. She, after all, wasn't so active and tended to freeze if left alone outdoors for over long, even with her furs.

Panata's eyes turned away from the sky and the Golden dragon for a moment, their next task trying to locate the woman who was bonded to said massive creature. It wasn't hard for him to do, she was one of the few people that had actually ventured outdoors on this cold day, not to mention the many flits that fluttered around her head gave away some of her identity. He raised his hand and gave a call out of her name, pretty sure that despite the fact she was a Queenrider she could still be addressed normally, and once he was sure her attention was had he started walking towards her . . .
.. . . only to trip on the corner of his boot. It caused him to fall face first to the ground, dislodging the two flits that were trying to stay warm against him. They both chirped in protest over the sudden introduction of the cold, Meisir's cries a lot more shrill then Atrisi's soft ones.
"Ooohm."

Amelia had turned when Panata had called out to her and blinked as he promptly decided to greet the ground as well. Laughing, the ex-Excavator shuffled over and offered a hand to him, "Are you alright? I didn't expect to see anyone out here.... it's so cold."
She grinned as the flits disappeared from near Sharath to appear around Amelia in a cloud of colour and chittering as all five of her flits greeted the newcomers. Images of indoors and dragons, herself... even Panata and food echoed through her mind and she shook her head, always amazed at the sheer amount of dragon gossip that flits seemed to partake in.
Who is that, Mine? Sharath called as she wheeled above, dipping into a lazily spiralling dive.
Panata. He woke me one day and he had a brown firelizard that rather appreciated your appearance. She felt the dragon riffle through memories at that and the confirmation as Sharath found what she was looking for.
Oh. Greetings, then. Hopefully his firelizards keep yours busy. They keep trying to teach me - I cannot roll and move as they do. She huffed, shaking her head, At least, not yet.

"Ah, yes. Sorry about that."
Panata grinned as he took the offered hand, pulling himself to his feet and quickly dusting off whatever snow clung to his clothing. He was thankful that his sleeves were a bit too long for him, his hands allowed a quick and warm retreat after the action was completed. He was surprised to see that amongst all of Amelia's firelizards there was now a brown, his memory telling him he hadn't seen that one before.
"I actually kinda like the cold, it's a new experience. I've never really been out in it because I was always trying to be busy, and since I was free today I want to try something new and let Meisir and Atrisi see the outside. This is Atrisi's first winter, and Meisir probably doesn't remember his."
At the mention of their names the two flits came to Panata's side, though Meisir once again seemed loathe to leave the beautiful gold and green that looked to Amelia. The pair sent messages of their own to the boy, mostly about the other flits and the dragon in the sky's . . . butt ( thanks Meisir ), and he laughed it off with a good smile.
"I don't think I have Atrisi when last we met, nor do I think you had that lovely brown?"

"Ah. Yeah, I try to enjoy it a little bit. It's always so hushed when it snows and everything's blanketed in ice that glitters when the clouds clear. It's pretty but I inevitably have to take a hot bath after to defrost." She chuckled as she offered him the warmed stones, "I've taken to carrying these - heat rocks. Helps keep your fingers warm."
Her gaze slid to the new flit and she held out a gloved hand to the young green with a smile, "It's the first winter for my brood as well. I don't know about Docili... He's kind of small though he picked me rather then hatching and Impressing to me." As the calling of his name, the little brown alighted on Amelia's forearm and peered at Panata, chirping. "I just sharding hope I don't accumulate any more... I have a rainbow, now. My own little Weyr... and not much mindspace to myself." She sighed, "Three little ones and a big ol' glorious Queen."
Turning her face skyward, she watched as Sharath tried a sharper sweep and smiled when the gold managed it without much trouble. "Though the little ones seem to enjoy showing Sharath how to fly." At that, the blue and bronze blinked Between once more, shortly followed by the green, leaving the brown and gold to flutter about around Amelia.
"How have you been? Was Astrisi a gift? She's really pretty. Nice and bright, reminds me of spring."
Above, Sharath trumpted annoyance once more and Amelia chuckled as the flits zipped about their much larger cousin, trying to show the queen the 'how to' of 'proper' aerial acrobatics - nevermind she was still learning to simply fly.

Meisir wasted no time in leaving Panata's side the moment the other firelizards shifted as well, adding his own form of annoyance to the crowd trying to "teach" Sharath what to do. Panata didn't even bother trying to call him back, he knew nothing would tear the little Brown away from his precious lady, so instead he kept his focus on Atrisi and the conversation Amelia was offering to him.
"With so many teachers I bet that she'll be unrivaled in the sky when the time comes for all of us to actually take flight. I hope we'll stay peaceful though, but it's better to be prepared."
It made him happy to think she was talking to him so naturally still, even though her dragon had aged to the point where most would avoid a Weyrwoman and allow her a sense of peace, and Panata did his best not to blush with thanks when he was handed a heat rock for his hands. He took it with much gratitude, enjoying the warmth.
"Atrisi was actually found by Meisir a seveday or so ago. He happened to feel there was a pretty lady around and he let me know, so myself and another rider went and found the clutch. They had already hatched and were the only two really to survive the carnage."
At the mention of her name again the vibrant Green padded over to Amelia's extended hand, her wedge-shaped head take a small poke to the object to see what it was. When she found it could do her no harm she proceeded to land atop the outstretched arm, chirping contently.
"She and Meisir do not get along very well, despite him having found her."

"I don't know... she seems rather determined to learn on her own. She's already tried to claw poor Altaica from the sky." She frowned as she glanced at the golden flit, amused by how she was echoing the motions of Sharath higher up. "Sharath doesn't take too kindly to the 'suggestions' of other golds."
That is because I am just as worthy as they, Mine. Why should I listen if my place is equal? The gold called, the indignant tone in her voice impossible to miss.
Sighing, Amelia shrugged faintly, I know, Sharath. But sometimes help is given earnestly and is not a sleight against your honour. Mm?
The gold simply snorted and returned to her practice, having decided she would rather improve her flying abilities then argue this point. Hers was a stubborn one and while the gold loved her all the more for it, it sometimes was frustrating. That, and she was getting chilly - they would not be out much longer.
"Really? She's only a week old?" Amelia asked, blinking as the tiny green crawled up onto her arm. Smiling she wiggled her fingers and cooed at the flit. "What happened? Did a Wher find the nest, maybe?"
At his complaint that the brown and green didn't get along, she tilted her head to the side, "They don't get along? But she's female... isn't that what Meisir chases all the time?"
She had to conciously filter the images her flits were sending her - mostly of gold butt - as they tried to figure out what Meisir was so interested in. This, of course, prompted some sort of comparison and critique of Sharath's hindquarters among the males assembled and Amelia couldn't help but laugh at that. "Your brown's a bad influence. Now they're all judging Sharath's rear..."
Hmph. The gold swept suddenly right but she didn't shake the firelizards and instead growled at them, a low, throaty sound meant to warn the little admirers off.
Ulysses and Nebulos backed off, but not by much - much to Sharath's chagrin.

The youth nodded in agreement over Sharath's determination, though he didn't see anything wrong with it. A Queen who wanted to be better was perfectly fine with him so long as she didn't intend to abuse her power on anyone or anything.
"I don't know if a wild Wher got to the nest, but there were very few eggs. Atrisi was near the front along with the other flit, so I was able to grab her rather quickly and get her away. And weird, isn't it? He shows the same amount of interest in her as he does tunnelsnakes, which is next to none, so often he leaves her alone. Atrisi owes him her life and I try to explain that to both of them, but I feel it might be better if I left it all alone. They'll get along eventually, come the time Atrisi decides to Rise."
Panata sounded like he knew what he was talking about, or at least sounded pretty convincing, and he nodded in response to what Amelia said about Meisir before he actually shook his head in apology.
"I'm sorry about that, he just li-"
He nearly jumped out of his skin the moment Meisir's fear over Sharath's growl came into his mind, his face growing quickly pale, though almost as instantly as it had come it passed. Soon his mind was filled with thoughts of pretty dragon once again, as well as competition. Meisir was not going to lose to these others, no!
"He won't give up until she attacks him, I'm certain of this. I really wish Atrisi had been his interest enough to keep him grounded."

"Hmn, well then she's a lucky one then. Maybe he'll be more interested when she Rises, yeah. I almost wish Ulysses would pay less attention to us - he's always finding gifts and things. Or that Nebulos wasn't so possessive of 'his girls'. Docili's too lazy for him to worry about but the blue is definitely a competitor as far as he's concerned." She chuckled, looking up as Sharath growled and sighed.
Hey. Don't hurt anyone. Tell them to go away if they're so annoying. She sent, frowning at her independant dragon.
I don't care where they are. As long as they're not trying to guide me. She shot back, tossing her head as she leaned into another turn that would bring her back around for a straight approach to Amelia.
She shrugged, Just don't hurt them. They're just trying to help.
The simply harumphed as the goldrider turned back to Panata. "He'll learn fast enough if he annoys her enough. Though she might also break his poor heart too. She can be rather blunt about her opinions. So, what have you been up to? It's been a while since we last met."

"I hope you're right about them getting along. The hissing and spitting over my bed each night when them fighting for a place to cuddle against me is counterproductive. I can't sleep and they can't sleep so we all end up with dark eyes and slow work ethics the next day."
Almost to prove his point Panata let out a soft yawn, his hand moving to rub the tears from his eyes that had developed during such a process. He had been falling asleep during some of the lessons lately since things were so quiet, not to mention every now and then even daring to doze off during chores. Him falling asleep while standing straight up was still something to talk about.
"I'm not sure I'd know how to properly deal with a broken-hearted flitt, not since they seem to have excellent memories anyway. A few days ago someone was telling me that they believed flitts had better memories than dragons, but I wasn't so sure about that. Does anyone really know anymore?"
He looked thoughtful, though he quickly moved on as the conversation moved on. No need to dwell on it.
"I've been doing really good, been spending my time doing chores around the Weyr and trying to meet other people. It's harder to get things done with all the Cold season coming so quickly, lots of people staying indoors, but I have found that I have a knack for cutting and peeling. I never thought I'd be good at something like that."

"Assign them sleeping spots?" She suggested, tilting her head to the side as she adjusted her furry hood, "That's how I organize mine. Everybody gets their own little territory and that area's theirs to maintain and sleep in. Docili gets my book case and desk... and he's always fiddling with stuff. It's almost like he's driven to tidy those areas." Amelia chuckled, "There's got to be room enough to designate 'sleeping quarters' for your flits. Everything else can be common space?"
With five fire lizards and a queen to care for, Amelia was quickly learning how to manage her brood of dragons even if she was still learning about handling the politics of people.
She glanced up at the green who blinked away from Sharath to hover in the air before Amelia for a moment before blinking back, "I.... don't know about that. 'Sar can't seem to pay attention to anything for very long. She has a horrible memory. Altaica, though, has a fairly decent memory... though I wouldn't be surprised if they shared impressions among one another - not exact memories but 'this is good', 'this is bad' sort of things."
"Cutting and peeling?" She echoed, "You work in the kitchens now? I'll have to come visit then, bother you while you're working." Grinning, she winked.
Meanwhile, Sharath had settled into her approach and it wasn't long before the sweeping of her wings threw up the drifts of snow and covered the two. Amelia hollered her complaint only to bend and form a snowball that she then pegged the gold in the nose with. Sharath started, rearing up as she fanned them again, the two girls laughing when a miniature snow storm whipped up. It's cold Mine, if you're finished pretending to be an icicle, let's go inside.
"You're the one that insists on practicing even in the cold, Sharath." She replied, turning back to Panata, "Apparently we should proceed inside now. After you?"

Panata was thankful that he had turned his back the moment the Queen had come to land, his body showered with cold snow that clung to him like an unwelcome guest, though he managed to shake it off rather quickly and just in time to watch a miniature snowball fight errupt between rider and her dragon. It made his heart ache a little to see such love shared, his mind sometimes wondering about the empty void he often felt inside his body, but that didn't last too long as the kind emotions of Meisir and Atrisi almost instantly filled in his mind. They loved their person a lot, even if they couldn't agree, so there was no reason for him to feel so sad and lonely.
When Amelia suggested it was time to go inside and get warm Panata nodded dumbly, his legs wasting no time in carrying him towards the entrance top the tunnels. The heating rock in his hands was slowly growing colder with each step his took, probably his imagination at best, but he wanted to be inside before it went cool entirely. Still, he remembered that Amelia had also asked a question before he'd started to move, so he politely responded.
"Yes, in the kitchens. I actually rather like being in there thanks to all the warmth and the smells, and I would love to see you there some time. Maybe you can give me a hand if you want, or I can sneak you a fresh roll."

Sharath padded along behind them, nudging Amelia's back with her cold snout to remind the rider she could not fit the Kitchens any more. Not comfortably anyway. I know. We're just going to stand near one of the hearths. I'm not going to leave you, Sharath.
The queen simply harumphed at that, Good. She was told and tired, she deserved some warmth and attention.
"Aye, I like the smells and warmth of the kitchens too, same with the tunnels though the scents there area vastly different from the kitchens." She chuckled, "I would help if I could but I think the staff would protest. I can try, though, next time I see you? And don't worry about fresh rolls!" She got enough special treatment, she didn't want to seem like she was using Panata. She genuinely liked the boy, but she wasn't so callous as that. "I get a lot of treats already... I don't want you to have to work extra for me. You're a friend, not a servant."
Her flits popped into existence around them in a rainbow coloured cloud and her gold settled on her shoulders, much to the brown's dismay as there wasn't enough room for both. The bronze, green, and blue didn't seem to have a problem with flying along but Docili was incredibly put out. Pouting, he finally settled on Amelia's head, or more precisely her hood. "If you fall off, it's not my fault." She spoke, amused by the wobbly, uncertain emotions and images the brown as sending her and as he tried to remain balanced.

Panata watched as all the flits burst in, rather glad that Meisir had stayed by his side as they moved and that Atrisi had been content to gather into his arms the instant they hit the warmth of the tunnels. He wasn't too sure how he would have dealt with all the little creatures flying around him in want of something, so having two that were mildly behaved made him happy enough. Any more than that and he might have some issues.
"It...it makes me happy to know I can be your friend. I don't hear that word too often around these halls, not with everyone so worried about things lately like the constant cold and the need for food. In fact, it's almost like there's something coming that people are scared of anyway, an underlying fear of sorts."
He'd been hearing whispers and rumors for a while, though not enough to have any idea what anyone could be talking over.
