Kaida presented a very different picture to what she usually did as Cassara and her walked slowly towards their destination. Her normally happy face was fixed in a sombre expression, almost befitting a funeral, instead of her normal light coloured leather outfit she wore a black dress, if asked she would say it was because she wouldn’t miss it and stains didn’t show up easily, she wore none of her jewellery, for it would merely get in the way, and her hair was out of its usual tight bun, instead it hung around her face casting shadows upon it and adding to the general feeling of gloom that surrounded her. The only thing that seemed out of place was the large esky she was carrying.

“Are you sure about this Cassara?” She asked with the worry she felt permeating her voice. What they were about to do was so dangerous and there was no guarantee that what Cassara had planned to help would work or simply make things even worse, she did not wish to think about what she may have to do if things went too wrong.

Cassara had plenty of shirts, wraps, and pants that she hadn't thought twice about changing her out fit. Perhaps she should eventually think about doing so because honestly when it came down to it her wardrobe was rather bland. Sure she had her concert outfits but that was just suits and those certainly wouldn't do for today- especially since there was a good chance of what ever she wore getting blood stained and tore up and heaven only knew what else.

"Never been more sure of anything than I am now. Well," she grinned, "I was sure of things when I married you." She stretched the length of her human form as they walked.

"Failure is the only thing I fear. The fog will make me face my fears... That is why I am damn near positive that this will work," she gave Kaida's hand a good squeeze. "Worst case the Island sees me as a play toy. We both know he's a greedy selfish pig. And, if I get raped again," she took a deep breath. "I've got you. I've always got you. Always had you." So, maybe she had a second (unexpressed) fear.

Kaida just sniffed, put down the esky and pulled Cassara in a tight hug, trying not to cry. She was so worried that after today she wouldn’t have her Cas anymore and she wasn’t sure what she would do if that happened. Truly the island taking her wasn’t her worst fear about this, her fear was that in the state that she would be afterwards Cas wouldn’t be able to overcome her fears and that it’d just make the problem worse – make her feral.

“Do you think we’re close enough yet?” she asked, she knew that if they had to walk much longer that she would lose all the nerve she needed to do what was required of her.

"We're as close as possible," Cassara answered as she hugged Kaida tightly. "Once step into that fog and I'm fairly certain we're going to get separated and forced into facing what we fear alone." Her voice was softer than it ever had been- it was this that actually told of how she felt and that she did have more fears than she was letting on to.

She stepped away from her lover and looked at her violin. It was the object that helped her through so much and she hoped that it would work with this as well. She knew that she was going to need something to help her control herself...

“Very well, I suggest you lie down for this – it also might be a good idea to strip, my clothes didn’t survive the state I was in after my transformation.” Kaida said firmly as she gathered all her courage, the next few hours would not be pleasant. As she waited for Cassara to do as she asked she set down the esky and opened it to check on what was inside, depending on how long this took what she had brought could be vital. Especially if anything caused the island to take a sudden dislike to her, it was midday out here and if it was anywhere else she would be violently ill but the islands sun did not hurt her, for now.

"Just remember that once you've done what you've got to do to shove me into the mist," Cassara said as her ears flattened. "I'm totally not worried about loosing this out fit... I've got a dozen more at both living locations," she spoke of her mothers house and their own.

She didn't think twice about the second request. In a mater of moments she was on the ground. She held no regrets about her decision. Her love was that deep. "Love you," she whispered.

“I know, I know. We’ve gone through it a dozen times before we got here.” Kaida said patiently, she had no clue what Cassara was thinking at the moment but she was sure they’d be a little fear.

“And I love you, forever and ever.” Kaida said with as much love in her voice as possible as she kneeled down and kissed Cassara softly. Pulling away she moved her head down to Cassaras neck and wrapped her arms around her so that if she struggled she couldn’t break lose.

And with that she bit down. It would take about 10 mouthfuls before the virus would decide that Cas was a viable host and make her gums start to bleed so that it would get into the bite wound. From there it would rapidly go through her blood stream and consume whatever blood was left, effectively killing her. For five minutes Cas would be truly dead and that would be the hardest bit. During that time the virus would be working its way into her bone marrow before forcing the cells to start producing the virus en mass instead of blood cells. Then when the virus had fully replaced blood in her system it would, and this was where her knowledge and Mamwas guesses got fuzzy, basically restart her system but make subtle change to her genetic code to make her a better host for it.

But that was all come she’d only just started drinking.

Cassara was strangely at peace. Anticipation was high and it made her hot all over. It was strangely almost more intimate than some of their more private moments. Feeling the world slip from her she let her eyes slip shut slowly.

She couldn't have been more content at any given time. She was in lover's arms and about to join her in forever. She knew there were consequences- she'd deal with them when the time came.

There was no fear in her that within seconds she would feel as if she being torn apart and made anew. Like an experiment in a scientific lab. It was all worth it. And, that made it easy for her.

Kaida pulled mouthful after mouthful of her loves blood, dutifully swallowing it and waiting for when the virus would decide that Cassara was an acceptable host. She tried to not linger on the heady taste of her mates blood but she knew she would always remember it, this was the first time in many years she had drunk fresh from the source. Finally she felt a pressure in her gums and the blood vessels along the surface popped, the virus spilling out flooding her mouth before dripping into Cassaras open wound as she held still.

Hissing slightly at the pain from the vessels rupturing and then repairing she pulled back and wiped the bright blue toxic looking substance off her lips and watched in satisfaction as the wound that had been left by her fangs closed up, that meant the virus has gotten in.

All she could do now was wait and hold Cassara, her job of getting her into the fog would not happen until after the virus had gotten to the staged that it had killed and revived her.

It was the white hot pain from the venom that brought her back from the 'light'. The light she had never intended to get to close to. She knew her love was awaiting her return- making it a silent struggle to not just let go.

It felt as if every inch of her was on fire. As if she'd been thrown from heaven into hell. Every peaceful thought and content feeling she had felt previous as she slipped into the realm of darkness was ripped from her.

It was as if she had swallowed a thousand sharp objects of various sizes and shapes. And on their trip down ripped into her before settling into her stomach.

She wasn't sure if it could be heard or not or if it was even a true feeling as she felt her bones crumble. Jelly and nothing more. She was helpless, lifeless as the virus took control of her.

As she lost control she lost her human form- not entirely but just enough to make her look awkward. Everything went haywire. Parts of her would revert back to dragon and then back to human. Her various splotches of red freckles expanded over her body until her skin was red.

Tears collected. She would try to scream but it was pointless. It wouldn't let her have her voice just yet. And, thus it remained in her head. It forced her to take everything it had.

When she thought it couldn't possibly get any worse her entire life flashed before her- out of order. The virus picked and choose what it wanted to see- her to see. Granted there were some pretty good memories. However, there were the times she had fought so hard to forget.

It was at that moment that her body reverted back to an entirely human shape with the exceptions of her tail, horn, and ears. Her eyes shot open as she sucked in a breath.

"No," was the first word she spoke. The last memory she had been forced to watch was when he'd climbed atop of her and she'd been forced.

The virus was nasty and cruel. It had a mind of its own. She just hoped that that was the last time it would be so violent with the exception of her new found need for blood to survive. But, it was no worse, no better than the island itself.

When the virus began to make its physical changes on Cas Kaida let go and stepped back, watching in a sort of horrified fascination. Roses retelling of this hadn’t quite prepared her for the truth of what it was like to be on this side of the transformation. She had to concentrate very hard not to lose the contents of her stomach as she watched Cas, for want of a better word, melt and then form again all the while shifting as a blue tint slowly covered her skin. The very last thing in the change that she sensed, during when she knew the virus was ripping through Casssaras memories, was how Cassaras scent change, it went from that of a beloved mate/prey/possible host to that of a beloved mate and one of us; the second one being something entirely new to Kaida and she couldn’t help but just stand there savouring it for a moment.

Then she opened her eyes and sadly knelt by Cassara, now was the time – before she gained the strength to move. Giving a heave she let Cassara roll into the fog before turning and running in the opposite direction so she wouldn’t be tempted to follow.

Cassara's skin was extra sensitive. She felt the dirt and grass beneath her shift as she was rolled into the fog. It was chiller. She rolled onto her stomach and dug her fingers, that were turning into claws, into the earth. She was forcing herself onto all fours. Her tail swung carelessly, heavily behind her. She felt lighter and it made balance difficult.

She watched as red scales formed up her arms. It was then that she realized that she was still not in control of herself- far from it. She jerked her head upwards as she roared. Bits of her randomly transformed from human to dragon and back again.

In all this it felt that her brain was being ripped apart. Every sense was heightened. She drew in a deep breath and quickly coughed. It was strange how unnecessary this human function was now. She felt the trickle of blood run down her nose. She had to blink a couple of times to focus.

"Who's there?" She whispered as her ears swivled.

Cassara could hear the soft humming of a familiar tune. The song of first love. One of the pieces that she use to be proud of. Now she tried her best to shut it out along with all the memories that went with it.

"You can never forget me," Vicky whispered as she crawled up next to Cassara's form. She ran her fingers along Cassara's spine and whispered sweet nothings into her ear.

Cassara wanted to snort in protest but instead moaned uncontrollably. She didn't know when it had occurred but she was now realizing is that she was paralyzed- forced to endure.

"You're so easy," Vicky whispered as she nibbled Cassara's ear. Her hands ventured to other more private areas. "Always helpless... Even now," she laughed.

Vicky was dead- had been for some time. What was alive and thriving was the island and the virus. She was realizing that they were working together to tear her apart. Something in Cassara snapped. She was not easy. She was not helpless.

Cassara swung her tail, She expected to hit flesh but instead she hit nothing. She struggled to break from the virus' grip. She growled. Everything in her tingled as she pried herself from its grasp. Finally she was on her back and breathing heavily.

Kaida sat taking shuddering breaths as she tried to ignore the part that screamed at her to go back and grab Cas and never let her go because she knew she couldn’t do that, this was Cas’s time. She alone had to figure out how to handle the Virus, Kaida couldn’t tell her – mainly because everyone handled it differently. Her Sire had embraced it like a long lost brother, she’d spent years fluctuating in and out of a coma like state as they tried to find even foot before coming to a mutual agreement but she’d only been able to do that because the Virus didn’t know how to deal with her kind, Cas didn’t have that luxury.

Suddenly she shot up, barley breathing. Up until now the Virus had been practically purring in her mind, so happy that she had finally turned another, but now it was snarling in fury – not at her but at her Fledge. Fear pumped through her veins and headless of Cassara’s previous warnings she ran headlong into the fog and to her mate.

What she found in the fog nearly broke her. “No, No, No. Not my Cas, not my darling mate. Please” she begged, practically wailing at the site before her. Her beloved Cas lying broken on the ground, a pool of inactive Virus – a deeply unsettling dark blue – spreading out around her as it flowed from her eyes, nose and ears. She’d feared this from the start, remembered the terror that had filled her when her Sire had whispered words of it as he slowly drained her. Her shining star had fought against the Virus and hadn’t won, but neither had the Virus, and in what would have been an agonizing last few minutes died.

All Kaida could do in the face of this revelation was scream to the heavens her grief, voice almost giving out.

Cassara wasn't exactly sure how long she'd laid there staring upwards. She wasn't sure if it was over or just beginning. What was up and what was down. All she knew is that it was all around her. It left her feeling violated, empty, dirty... She wanted to shut her eyes and give up but she'd come to far. She pushed the thought from her mind.

Then as if her appendages were attached to strings she pulled into a sitting position. She growled and swung her arms. She didn't want to be attached. She wanted to be free. She easily shift to dragon. It was easy- to easy. She welcomed the scaled skin, the armor. She felt less used.

Then just as easily as she shifted to dragon she shifted to human. She was learning that she did have control over the virus and that it didn't have control over her. From here on out it was all about coexistence.

Cassara pushed her mess of hair behind her ears and out of her face. She took a couple deep breaths. There was something she was suppose to remember. However, her mind was empty. There was no thought other than how to operated her body. She snorted.

Her ears swiveled when she heard a branch snap. She breathed heavily and forced herself not to panic when she felt a set of hands on her shoulder.

"It isn't over," the Island whispered into her ear. "She's come for you..." it released it's grip from her shoulders and took a couple steps back.

"Come for me?" She growled and held her head. It hurt so bad to think, to try and remember. The virus wanted her to remain empty- where she was completely without will and completely controllable. What had come for her? Was it friend or foe?

She spun around to get a look at what surrounded her. Emptiness. Dizziness. She collapsed to her knees but refused to cry. She forced herself to keep the thought that this was all solvable.
