¨*:·.♥.·:*¨ Previously I had always followed the widely accepted rule of matching your avi's hair to the rest of the avatar... Recently, however, I have kind of been straying from this rule, mainly because of the fact that there are a few wigs that have come out that I adore heart and can't use them enough. How do you guys feel about this? Part of me cringes when my wigs don't match but the other part of me just ignores it.

usually i follow the hair-match-outfit rule for my tekteks however, sometimes i change the hair for the sake of the avatar's style
it really depends what kind of theme you are going for

Well I'm talking to people who are specifically in the matching style

Sometimes you match and you go for a theme at the same time. In that case it's more important to be true to the theme if you are to add a hair that doesn't match. The rest of the avatar should still be matching. It's fine.
You can't go around adding Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy hair to everything though. Well, you can, it will just seem weird.

Ah yessss the great hair matching debate.
I believe the hair should match. If you're going to make a straight up matching avatar, the hair should match. The eyes should match. And if possible, the skin tone should be balanced and/or match. If you're going for a matching avatar, everything should match.
Then there's the other side of the debate. "But irl, you don't put on clothes that match your eyes and hair. That's just silly!" Yes, that would be. You know, unless you had hot pink hair. Then that'd be awesome. C: Anyway~ This is a little pixel doll, not real life. If you're going for the matching style, you should match. I think it's a waste to try so hard only to have hair ruin the matching look you've got going.
And, well,... it also depends on the hair color. I think it's disappointing when someone has a perfectly matched avatar and then bright brown hair that stands out. If they had something more pale that doesn't make me go, "aaahhhhh hair" then it's all good. (white, light blond... maybe even black.) About a year ago, I contemplated getting a hairstyle in that pale blond color. I saw a a lot of people who wore matching items, yet didn't match their pale hair. I thought it was pretty. I didn't look at their avatar and think "aaahhhh hair" because the hair didn't stand out. It blended into the background. But no, I decided to stay with my grey/white theme. Actually, the whole reason I used to go with grey hair was so that my hair wouldn't stand out much. We had no wigs. We had one hairstyle that could pass for white and I didn't like it. XD; I figured grey wouldn't stand out too badly if I felt like being colorful and not adding grey to match. Now that I have wigs, I guess it's time to move on to color. XD
Sometimes a different hair color can add a nice color splash effect and create a focal point around the face. In that case though, I don't consider it to really be a true matching avatar. With matching, the colors should be spread evenly so that the eye flows over the avatar. There shouldn't be one item drawing the eye in to any one spot. > < Having a focal point might not be a bad thing, but I still say the wouldn't match. XD;
With that said... I don't really care if someone doesn't want to match their hair. I'll ignore the hair if someone says that's what they want. <.<;;; Sorry, talked a lot again.

Well, speaking as someone who only changed my avatar's hairstyle once and that was to go from newbie to something that matched my real hair...
Unless I'm going strictly with a theme I want my hair to match. Always. Which means I have a bunch of wigs and hats. I suppose it helps that I don't deviate color schemes much.

¨*:·.♥.·:*¨ I guess my main reason for it is that all the wigs I really love wearing rarely have a lot of matching options...but I still love wearing them so I've just decided I don't care that much. Actually, I DO care, but I've decided to care less until I have a bunch of items to match them with. Ha (: Thanks for all the feedback people

I actually don't think that hair needs to always match. Sometimes, in a read and green outfit, a flash of inky black hair adds flare instead of just choosing green or red. or, with something like a blue avatar, some silver hair might complement the blue quite nicely. Sometimes, matching hair is too much, actually.

It seems to me that the colors of hair that doesn't match that are accepted by people are only colors that actually exist in nature.
Anyone have an opinion on that?

I don't have an opinion on that, since to me any hair that doesn't seem to be really matching the shades is not working. It doesn't matter whether the hair that differs greatly from the color scheme is light brown or bright pink, if it doesn't match the otherwise well matched avatar, it just doesn't fit in.
I've grown to be such a nit-picker lately, I even choose the hair that has the shade of white I need for matching. x'D That's why I've failed at golden avatars lately. Blond hair isn't enough to me, it has to be gold - and I don't feel like buying the hair items that have the golden hair option just for one avatar. >.<;; If I can't find the perfect hair, I just cover it with head items. : D

Ehhh... I have a personal bias against avatars where everything matches except for their brown hair. It's the brown hair color that bothers me. If the brown doesn't stick out much, that's okay. I've seen a lot of soft pale blond, but it just blends in more to me. Black blends in more. So do white and grey. Red often has a nice color splash effect. But for some reason, I swear that whenever I see hair that doesn't match... it's always brown. XD; It's just something I've grown tired of seeing.

I think you should DO WHAT YOU WANT with your own avatar. You're supposed to be having fun and enjoying it, right? smile Screw most idiotic peer (or other) pressure to conform to the norm. As long as you're not 'injuring' others or making yourself look like an utter a**, then viva la differance! biggrin

We like to make our avatars based on matching, so it's nice to share personal preferences for the details with people who feel the same.
People who don't like matching can naturally make their avatars according to their own personal likings. :]
