I have the Forgotten Realms supplement in PDF form which includes racial info about drows so you can play them as characters. Beyond that, I'm not sure there's any "right" way to do it. (I could try to send it to you if you like~)

Honestly I would suggest not playing Drow if you are just starting. I know it'll be a hell of a lot easier on your DM if you don't. Drow tend to be very overpowered and it can make the DM's job of keeping everything in balance that much harder unless, of course, your DM is specially tailoring a campaign for Drow or similar characters. Trust me there as I speak from experience.

However, if you do wish to play a Drow and have the approval of your DM, there are a couple of different ways you can play a Drow. The first thing you have to know is what version of D&D you are playing. Though most people use version 4.0 (the current version), there are still those that play with version 3.5 for various reasons. I actually still DM 3.5 because all of my group agrees that we like the world much better then 4.0.

Anyways, back to the topic. In 4.0 there are really only two viable types you can play. The first is the typical Drow. Cruel hearted in nature, you are pretty much as evil as evil gets. You are conniving, cold-hearted, and generally will do anything you can to make yourself more powerful. The second type you can play as is more the Drizzt Do'Urden approach. Your a Drow that has turned their back on the regular lifestyle of the Drow. You could play as a "good" Drow, or just one that isn't necessarily "evil".
If you play 3.5 and use the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, there is one additional option. You can also play as a Drow that follows the goddess Eilistraee, in which case your character would be good and usually devoted to bringing other Drow to the light.

Those are the ones I can think of, at least. Anyways, though, good luck on playing your Drow character. It can be one of the hardest races to play.

wow... talk about 2-Dimensional gaming... stare

alright, lemme give ya a li'l help 'ere....

in the Forgotten Realms setting, Drow are found both on the surface and in the Underdark. they can be broken down into severel groups of backgrounds...

~ Drow from Menzoberranzan or Ched Nasad are archtypical FR Drow. they live by gigantic pecking orders within Matriarchal Theocratic city-states. they have a ruling council of 8 Noble Houses, and then the rest of the Noble Houses. each house in teh city is numbered, the first eight being the ruling council, headed by the First House. if you do not belong to a Noble House, you don't have any rights. (except females, who in this case can still command any male)

all females are taught to be Priestesses of the goddess Lloth, the Spider Queen. some lucky few maage to escape training, but are often sent in hiding for fear of being ostracized and killed for heresy. males are taught to be warriors or wizards, but are more likely than females to choose other classes, since they'll be treated like s**t anyway. everyone in these cities are ranked according to gender, House, whether or not they are Noble sof that house, proffession (male Wizards are superior to male Warriors, male Assassins/Rogues are superior to male Clerics, female Priestess are superior to female Warriors, who are superior to female Wizards, who are superior to female Assassins/Rogues), and titles. Matron, First Daughter, Second Daughter, Third Daughter, etc..., First Son, Second Son. the Mistress of the Academy, Master of the Wizard Scool, Master of the Warrior School. the Archmage is the highest station a male can get, and if he is the First Son of the Matron of the First House, then he has the absolute pinacle of station. even he is lower in station than a Houseless female who scrapes by with prostitution.

they do not trust, period. they are paranoid, haughty, and believe themselves to be superior to all other beings. slavery is common among them.

~ Drow who worship Eilistraee usually come from the above type in origional background, but can also be raised as Eilistraeeans on the Surface (or even, much more rarely, in the Underdark). they are usually stuck between worlds, having many old habits of their former Llothite lives, and being harsh, just like their Llothite cousins. they have difficulties trusting, but try very hard. they usually will refrain from slavery however, but may or may not hold on to their personal belief of being a superior race. they will still try to reach out to other Elf-kind, as is their religion. they are still Matriarchal, and only females may be Priestesses of Eilistraee, just as only females may be priestesses of Lloth.

Eilistraeean Drow who were raised in that religion are much kinder, more sympathetic, but still Matriarchal and sometimes very judgemental. they don't think of themselves as superior to other Elves though.

~ Drow who worship Vhaeraun are very much to the Eilistraeeans like Black Power was to Martin Luther King Jr. ... instead of trying to reclaim a harmonious place with the rest of Elfkind, they seek to take over the surface and control it for Drowkind only. they are usually in the mindstate that they should also be patriarchal, however there are also many sects that believe in gender-equality. they are concerned with privacy and secrecy, and take alot of security measures, especially to keep their own identities and faces hidden. stealth is a lifestyle for these Drow.

~ in some Underdark Drow cities, males have risen to power, usually instating Patriarchal Magocracies, where it is much like Llothite Drow cities, but where male Wizards rule, and females are worthless second-class citizens completely subject to the whims of the Patrons.

there are also the occaisional unique Drow lifestyles and cities, which develop based around their needs or environment.
