Later this week I have to teach a professor how to create a web page for my state's German teachers association. It should be a fun site to create but I am worried about my ability to clearly explain web design and coding. This professor has little to no experience. I know that since this site is going to be for state-wide teachers, I will have to make the code up to standards, but it seems rather intense to teach someone about such things when they are just starting out. So, what does everyone else think? I was thinking I would teach the professor to use paragraph tags and heading tags, but leave the css styling to me, only explaining why I would use it. I hope to make the site with each tag closed ( , ![]() , etc) but most people start out in design view which makes that difficult. Please post small ideas, experiences, or helpful links. Your help would be appreciated! heart ~Hahn

I would say when you are teaching this guy start out with the most basic, most needed stuff. teach him how to change the font/color/size of text, how to start off the page how to put in a image, etc.. the most commonly used stuff first. it won't be as hard as you think, I taught a boy I know who didn't know any html all of that in about 15-20 min, and once he got the hang of using the greater than, less thank signs and how it basicly worked he picked up other things quite fast.] however, a small word of caustion. when you first learn to make text 20 fonts sizes and colors, you want to do all those at once, most people who have just started with websites that I have seen tend to go a tiny bit over the top with text effects and such. if he tends towards this trend, simply find a way to convey to him that it should look very professional, wich elimanates some of those over the top fonts and wild cyan-yellow-magenta combos ^__^

Hrmm...
So is he creating the entire site, layout and all? Or are you doing that, and he's just writing content?
If he's doing the layout as well... um... it probably won't be brilliant xp
If he's just doing the content, thats not so bad. Get him to start out in code view (just tell him that design view is for fools, appealing to a professors pride in their intelligence usually works), and teach him the standards way straight out, instead of normal html. Just get him to use the normal tags (NOOOOOO tags!) and link the stylesheet for it on your own. Explain what the stylesheet does, and say you'll explain it to him in more detail after he's got the hang of html.
Well, thats how I'd do it anyway 3nodding
So so, want to write the html tutorial for next month's e-zine? blaugh

SilverVixen Just as a note... I think the teacher is a woman... Not sure where Hizzahn is! He's usually on! smile Sleeping with womens blaugh Thanks Chisa, that is pretty much how I planned it out. I hope I'm not still going to sick. I think I am supposed to teach her how to make webpages, she has some design/content ideas. Until recently the site was hosted by another school and the torch is being passed. Thank you for the ideas so far. I'm going to ask my boss what he thinks as well. Keep 'em coming!

I'm pretty much in a state of disbelief because of today. I made an initial layout for the Idaho Association of Bilingual Education, seen here. It is only a first draft and I made it in two days. I sent that link to the professor I've been working with and she essentially told me that she like the old design better. Good cripes it's a spawn of Frontpage wizard, aka SATAN. I was excited about making this page, I thought the design looked good and I was going to show her that there is so much better. This is a liberal arts college! There are going to be teachers from every highschool and college in the state. I think we need to make something a bit more out of the box! crying I don't know if I can swallow my pride and use the FP design. I'm not better off pushing the 133t key right? Someone tell me I'm a decent web designer gonk

NO! NO USING FRONTPAGE! Your layout is much better than the original one *shudders*. I realise that thats just your first draft, but I still have a couple of suggestions blaugh The mauve background confuses me a bit, because it doesn't seem to go with the blues in the middle bit, or go with anything else on the layout. Also, since the site will be aimed at both men and women, steering away from colours that the more stupid men might find effeminate might be a good idea. I'd go with a CSSed list menu like the ones at Listamatic so you can avoid using pictures for them, and maybe use a picture for the heading, which is a little plain so far, instead. I generally find 10 or 11px font easier to read and neater looking than the default 12 (I think thats what it is...). Last of all, if you don't specify a height for the content section, it will stretch to fit whats in it, instead of stopping short. sweatdrop Sorry, I know you didn't ask for a critique, just couldn't help myself. I really do like it so far though, especially the slightly off center look. It will work well at different screen resolutions, and besides the purple has a nice, consistent and easy to read colour scheme. If your teacher reeeeally prefers the old one and refuses to be swayed, maybe find out what it is she likes about it? It may just be that she prefers a left side menu, or the colour green, or something that you can easily incorporate into your layout without destroying it, and thus avoiding the EVIL THAT IS THAT OLD LAYOUT.

Yeah, major changes ahead for this one. I keep forgetting that dreamweaver previews in iexplorer instead of firefox. It looks like crap in the REAL browser. Thanks for the tips Chisa. Good call on the listed menu. It was giving me a hard time earlier so I just went with the graphics since I had to make it presentable by the end of the day.
Sigh. I guess I'll work on it some more. I've pretty much always had creative control so this feels really off.
So are the colours different on everyone else's screen? I'm on a laptop so I never really know what things look like. It looks all blue to me.

FP is better than you. LMAO at you Hizzahn. You would be better off using a MS WORD template. Geeze, what are you trying to do, actually create something that looks good! AGHAST. Go back to school and maybe spend sometime reading my books. stare

I did a couple updates. Okay, I like it so far. The only problems is, I'm terrified by color. I always make my pages too blue. I want to break it up a bit as well. I can't decide if I like the state logo push to the left enough that it hangs over the border or not. I am going to put some sort of subtle pattern in the background, not quite sure what yet.
I wanted to make the logo faded but the professor lady complained rolleyes
I don't know if it is because of the deadline or if she does actually like it, but she is going to use my design. It is going to be presented to the board next week so I've got to start moving content soon.
