Perfection

"Ashleigh Love. Perfect in every aspect. Beautiful, smart, kind, generous. Designed at birth to be flawless - so what went wrong?"

PostPosted: Fri Jan 22, 2010 4:22 pm

Preface

It was decided before I was born that I was going to be perfect. Perfect student, perfect athlete, perfect daughter. They said it took a lot of time to make me perfect, but the result was, as expected flawless. My skin has never burnt, I've never had a zit. My hair is agreeable and does whatever I want it to.

I was perfect.

Keyword: was.

It wasn't long before everything caught up on me.

Right on time

My dream ended right as my internal alarm went off. 5:30, time to get up. I quickly rolled out of bed, happily embracing the cold morning air that blew threw the open bay window. The new day would bring about new opportunities and chances.

It was early Spring in Middleton, Wisconsin, and the softball season was just beginning. The air was filled with the scent fading leaves and chimney smoke. Ducks called from the lake only a block away, waiting for picnickers to arrive and toss their scraps to them.

I styled my hair into soft, golden curls - which I would later pull back for the game, brushed my teeth, and had put my school stuff together in under half an hour. By the time I approached my closet, I could hear my older brothers, Nicholas and Jonathan, groggily awaking in their own rooms to the obnoxious sound of buzzing alarm clocks.

Unceremoniously, I slid into a dark toned, sleeveless dress that fell just below my knees, pairing it with a long sleeved, black shrug and a pair of knockoffs of Yves Saint Laurent open toed heels.

I left my room, bag over my shoulder, and made my descent to the kitchen and began making breakfast: eggs over easy, hash browns, and a side stack of pancakes for the guys. My favorite radio station played as I cooked, occasionally causing an outburst of singing or dancing with the spatula for a number or two. All the while, all the food cooked just fine, nothing overdone, nothing underdone.

Nicholas and Jonathan came racing down the stairs just as I dished the last plate and set it on the table. Mom and dad descended calmly behind them, dressed for work and ready for the day to begin.

6:37 - Right on time.

"Good morning, my little angel. Breakfast smells great!" Dad grabbed my head and kissed me on the forehead before sitting down to eat. The boys had already scarfed down their eggs and hash browns and had started on the pancakes.

Mom grabbed a plate of her own and quickly had a few bites of hash browns and eggs and then set it in the sink. "The big case is supposed to come to a close today." She explained on her way out of the house. "Good luck at your softball game today, Ash!" She called before shutting the door behind her.

"Oh yeah, Ash is going to hit it out of the park - knock 'em dead!" Nick exclaimed. I laughed.

"You know, Nick, I think that might just be twisting the rules if I kill someone."

"Maybe... but if you rid the world of one more girl who sucks at softball, I don't think much of anyone would care." Jonathan retorted.

"Well if that's the case..." I paused to look at the clock. 6:53. "Then we all better get going. Dad, you're going to be late to the office if you don't leave soon." Dad looked at his watch and panicked.

"What would we do without you, Ash?"

"Probably starve, not to mention you would all be chronically late!" The boys laughed at my statement.

"Very true, very true, my angel." He chuckled as he went out the door.

I gathered the dishes and rinsed them off and then loaded everything into the dishwasher.

"That hit the spot!" Nick yawned, stretching in his chair. Jonathan reached over and hit him in the gut.

"No, it destroyed the spot!" Jonathan laughed racing out of the kitchen. "See you at school, Ashleigh!" He laughed as he ran out of the house, Nick right on his tail.

Right as I finished cleaning up the kitchen, the oven clock turned to 7:01. Right on time.

My phone rang inside my bag, signaling a text message.

Hey grl. Tst 2day in Chem.

I looked at the number it was sent from, Karen McEwen. We'd been best friends in elementary and had maintained that friendship through middle school, even though she'd gone to prep. and I'd gone to Kromrey Middle. Now in high school, we were practically inseparable.

On formulas, right?

I replied as I turned my key in the ignition of my car, a cherry red, 2010 Mini Cooper my mother had received as a "gift" from one of her clients who's case she had won despite popular belief. The console came to life in a whirl of colors - 7:02 the clock read. Right on time.

At 7:19, my car rolled to a stop and sat perfectly aligned between the two white lines identifying the parking space. I put on the parking break and shut off the car just as my favorite song came to an end.

At 7:20, my solitary stroll toward the school building had started collecting friends and followers. Karen started telling me all about her date the night before and how she was debating whether it was time to take her relationship with the guy to the next level, or to just dump him and get it over with.

"It's only been a week, Karen, why don't you keep it at PG-13 for a little longer?" She smiled and agreed to my advice.

I laughed and conversed with the group until 7:23, at which time I headed for my locker to collect my books for class. When I had everything gathered in my arms, I headed straight to my class, high fiving, waving, and hugging people along the way. Just when I took my seat in home room, the bell rang.

Right on time.

Ronnie Walker

"I can't stand that girl!" Ronnie hissed at her food.

"What was that, Veronica?" Her mother asked from the other side of the dining table.

Her voice echoed slightly off of the high ceiling as light flickered from the chandelier above. Shadows danced on the ceiling, but Ronnie paid no notice, her mind was stuck on other things.

One other thing. The lowest thing of low things to talk about.

Ashleigh Love.

Ever since grade school, Ronnie had stood in the enormous shadow of Ashleigh Love. A grade below, a lower GPA, less friends, less boys chasing her. And when it came to families in Middleton, Ronnie's family was number two when it came to financial security. Can you guess whose family is number one?

Ashleigh Love.

Ronnie stabbed her fork into her steak. "Nothing, mom, just thinking out loud." She imagined her steak was Little Miss Perfect, and instantly began cutting it into tiny little pieces. No more perfect face, no more perfect voice, no more Ashleigh Love.

“Oh, mom, there’s a party I’m going to tomorrow night. I’m going to be out late.”

Her mother nodded, “okay.” She said out of habit.

All her life she’d been standing in Ashleigh’s shadow, but things were about to change.

***

Veronica Walker wasted no time the next day in finding Chase and Gale, two boys who'd always fathomed of being with Ashleigh. "Make sure Ashleigh goes to Mariah's party tonight." She'd told them both. "It could be your last shot of ever getting with her. Besides, she told me last night all about how she's aching to see what a real man is like."

Their faces had twisted like puppies staring at the bones on the empty dishes. They were pathetic, unable to hide their... excitement - in Middleton High, who expected a boy to be different when it came to Ashleigh Love.

"Ashleigh!"

"Ash!"

The shouts came the moment the enemy entered those double entry doors. A grin snaked it's way onto Ronnie's face.

Her plan had set in motion.

Perfect?

At the game yesterday, I swung the bat and the ball went soaring... it was the winning hit, and our school had dominated once again. Undefeated. That's a big word to live up to. When I looked into the stands to see the fans, I immediately saw my brothers. A flicker of hope lit in me, maybe mom had come?

But no. Neither mom nor dad had shown up to the game. Just Nicholas and Jonathan.

"So are you going to the party at Mariah's tonight?"

I turned around in the cafeteria line to find Veronica Walker standing in line behind me, startled out of my thoughts. I moved forward in the line, I hadn't noticed it had progressed.

"I don't know. Maybe. Are you going?"

"Oh of course I'm going! I wouldn't miss it for the world! You're not really thinking of missing it, are you?" From her tone, I knew she wasn't asking, but accusing me. She might be a year younger, but she had no fear confronting upperclassmen. I have to go. Just play it cool.

"I'll probably go, just have to clear it with the wardens, you know?" Ronnie stared at me blankly.

"Are you in trouble with them or something?" She asked as we moved forward in the line.

"No, I just typically tell them where I'm going to be. It's why they trust me." Ronnie nodded.

"So you will be going tonight then?" I sighed. Ronnie, Ronnie, Ronnie...

"Yeah, I'll be there."

"Sweet! Do you want me to help you get ready?" She asked excitedly. I smiled and nodded. "Alright! I'll be over at your house around... screw it, I'll just go home with you. It's going to take so much time to get you... us ready." I laughed. She would no doubt take longer getting ready than I would.

"Young lady, this is a lunch line, not a gossip column. Now either give me your ID, or get out of line." Ronnie huffed. She hadn't realized we'd gotten to the front of the line. She fished her ID out of her purse and handed it to the old lunch lady to process through the machine.

"I hate this school. I can't wait to get out of this place!"

"Oh, come on, Ronnie, Middleton isn't that bad."

"For you it isn't." Her tone surprised me. Had I said something wrong?

"Sorry if I offended you. But, hey, we're going to have fun at the party tonight, right?" My phone started buzzing in the pocket of my jeans. I looked at the screen, 'DAD' it read.

"Hello?" I asked as I slid it open.

"Hey, hon. Just landed in LA for the meeting. How's school?"

We conversed about his flight as Ronnie and I navigated our way to the table where all of our friends sat.

"Oh, daddy, there's this party tonight at Mariah's." I could almost see him nodded across the country.

"Have fun then, baby girl. Just don't get yourself into any trouble." I lauhed.

"No problem. Talk to you later?"

"Alright. Have fun. Talk to you later."

The line went dead. I slid my phone into my pocket.

"So you're going then?" Ronnie asked excitedly. I nodded and took a sip of water. "Oh, I can't wait for tonight!" She squeeled.

And suddenly, neither could I.

***

"Hmm... what about this one?" Ronnie pulled a dark tank top and skirt from my closet. I shook my head.

"Too tacky. I don't know why I still have that." She laughed and threw it on the ground with all the other misfits I would later have to hang back up.

"You really need to go shopping, Ashleigh." I laughed.

"Yeah, probably. I mean, after we're done sorting through this mess, I'll still have - what? A full closet full of perfectly good clothes?" We both laughed.

"Oh my god! Ashleigh, this is the dress! You have to wear this tonight!"

I looked at what she was holding. It was a purple dress I had bought a few weeks ago when I was with my cousin, Riley. She'd said the dress was perfect for me, too.

But when I'd tried it on, I hadn't liked it all that much. It was more like a short tank top than a dress in my opinion. But if both Riley and Ronnie liked it...

"You are so right! I'll go switch into it while you find something to wear." Never before had I been so relieved to leave my room, but something about Ronnie... it was just... overwhelming.

"Do something with your hair while you're in there!" Ronnie shouted. Had she always been like this?

I comply, and after putting on the dress, I pull my hair up with a scrunci, brushing out the loose strands.

I look over myself in the mirror. And the first thing that comes to my mind...

"I look like a slut." I can hardly hear my own voice, but I know it's true.

The dress hardly covers enough to keep it moderately modest at my legs, and the top dips down low - lower than my own parents would be comfortable with if I was just walking around the house - around my room.

I start back for my room to throw on a pair of jeans beneath the... dress, but Ronnie meets me on the other side. She looks me over.

"Damn girl! You look sexy!" I smiled and tried to squeeze past her. "Where are you going?"

"I was just going to get some leggings or something. Jeans maybe."

"Why would you do that? You look perfect!"

"I just... I don't really feel like it's appropriate."

Ronnie laughed.

"Of course it is! It's a party! Loosen up, Ash!" She pulled me back into my room and sat me in front of my vanity. "Come on, let's do your makeup."

I let her take full control, it seemed to be as if she knew what she was doing - why not let her have her fun?

After about ten minutes or so - which is so much longer than I would have ever spent doing my makeup myself, Ronnie was done. And she was right, I looked sexy. But not me.

A car horn honked outside.

"That's odd... I don't think we're expecting - "

"It must be the guys." She looked at the alarm clock on my nightstand. "I told them to show up around seven. Surprisingly they're early." She laughed, I swear I could sense nervousness. "Well, we're ready, so why keep them waiting?"

For the first time, I realized Ronnie was wearing. The dark, short jumpsuit she wore was definitely not mine. I would never buy something like that in a million years. The heels she wore with it... she looked like a street walker.

Was this normal?

When we exited the front door, I watched the boys as their jaws dropped. It was Chase and Gale, two guys from the football, basketball, and baseball teams. I didn't really know them, but Jonathan trusted them, so I guess I could, too...

Gale reached over and hit the car horn, causing even more laughter to emit from Ronnie. As we got into the car, both of the boys turned around to look us over, a look in their eyes I knew, but had never encouraged.

What had I gotten myself into?

Unravel

“This party is smoking!” Ronnie squealed as she squeezed my hand before letting it drop to hang casually by my side. She looked like a child whose parents were about to make all of her dreams come true. “Hey, Mariah! Catherine!” She stood on her toes and waved into the crowd, snaking away from me without a second thought.

I stood there, a little ways away from the door, and watched the people around me, searching for a familiar face. Already, the crowd had swallowed Ronnie - how had she been able to find her friends from here in the first place? Music pounded in my ears and pulsated through the floor and into my legs. I scanned the crowd to see if there was anyone I recognized – not a single soul. Throughout the entire crowd, I couldn’t recognize a single person – even Veronica had disappeared.

The scent of beer filled my nose and suddenly I felt the attention pressing on me. Several pairs of eyes found me among the crowd. All boys.

“Nathan? Nate Harold?” I’d known him since Jr. High, a tough California, model-type guy. He was rather attractive – if you were into the all looks and no brains kind of guy. A smirk crawled across his mouth as I whispered his name. “Oh wow. Okay, so I’m not a total stranger here!” I laughed uneasily. I didn’t like the way he was looking at me, like he was undressing me – not that there was really much to take off with Ronnie’s choice of clothing – with his eyes.

“Hey ‘Shleigh, lookin’ fine.” His voiced slurred. He stumbled forward and took my wrist in his hand.

“Don’t.” I said sharply. I made my point clear enough at school – why would he think it would change here? I wasn’t even hammered! I just barely arrived! But still, his arms found their way around my waist. “Knock it off, Nate.”

“Oh please, we know how much you want us. How you need us.” I pried his limbs off of me and pushed away from him.

Bile threatened to rise in my throat. “Excuse me? What did you just say?”

“You don’t need to play hard-to-get, anymore. We know all about your act.” The voice was warm against my ear and freaked me out.

“What the hell are you talking about?” I jerked around and treaded toward the door, leaving the boys behind. I wasn’t staying at this party whether Ronnie did or not. It was a bad idea to show up in the first place.

"Knock it off, would you?" The voice came from behind me, already a mumble among the party goers. I left the house through the front door, not bothering to find Ronnie. Let her have her fun, but this party gave me the creeps.

I paced down the drive, meandering through the seemingly endless rows of cars, searching for my own.

"There it is." I whispered

But when I approached the car, I found it was not mine for three reasons.

Reason one: The plates were different from that on mine.

Reason two: Two complete strangers were going at it in the back seat.

Reason three: I hadn't driven here - Ronnie had gotten us a ride with Chase and Gale. A fact I had completely forgotten.

I cursed under my breath, now I'd have to walk home. I'd done everything wrong - left my car home, my phone home, lost Ronnie in a crowd of complete strangers - why had I been invited to this party anyway? Ronnie, Chase, Gale, and I seemed to be the only ones from Middleton High anyway - and I hadn't even seen if the boys had got out of the car! They had still been sitting patiently when Ronnie and I got out of the car... Maybe they'd been smart and left after letting us out or something...

"Leaving so soon?"

The voice caught me by surprise. Self consciously, I reached for the ever-so-high hem of my dress, pulling it down about a centimeter or so. I quickened my pace down the drive, almost to the gate.

"Hey, where you going?" The voice was familiar, but I couldn't quite put a face to it.

A pair of footsteps fell quietly behind me, and against my first instinct, I turned around to confront my 'stalker'. They stood against the light behind them, masking their features with the night.

"Now that's what I'm talking about! Woo-ee, girl!" He called, only about ten feet standing between us. Behind him stood four other guys; each and every one of them looked as if they actually belonged inside the the party, each dark figure was tall with football stature.

"I've been waiting for this moment all my life." It was a different voice this time, a familiar voice that made my heart almost stop beating.

"Gale?" I hesitated, but stepped closer. They were set up almost like bowling pins; The one who had done all the speaking up until Gale's comment stood front and center, his teeth gleaming through a smirk. He'd graduated last year, I realized, and had hung out with Jonathan at our house at least a dozen times in the last year: Tony Andrews.

Gale and Chase stood behind him, and behind them, Nate Harold and an unfamiliar face.

"Waiting for what?" I snapped, a knee - jerk reaction. Tony took another step forward, then another and another until I could feel his breath on my face as he looked down on me and cupped my chin in his hand.

"Don't play coy with us - in that getup, you're practically begging us to notice you. And, you know what?" He paused as he moved his mouth next to my ear. "We have fully noticed you." He flicked his tongue across my ear as the others burst into laughter at my disgust.

"Is that so?" I asked, battering my lashes at him. His eyes went dumb and his jaw slacked then, and I knew that that was my chance to strike.

I jerked my knee as hard as I could between his legs. The dress rose higher on my thighs, but I was beyond caring. He let go of my face to shield his crotch as he cursed. I ran, harder than ever before.

My arms pumped furiously by my sides as I booked it down the ill lit street. I could hear Tony and the others at chase behind me - they were close. One wrong step and I was theirs.

Dear God, please don't let them get me! I have never wronged You or committed a crime - please, please, please! Don't let them get me!

The prayer circulated itself in my mind as it played over and over again.

"Get back here!" Tony screamed, and I knew that if I did, accidentally or by surrendering... If I did, nothing good would come of it.

My heart raced and my breath came in shallow as the tears rolled down my face. Goosebumps rose on my exposed skin and my hands began to shake. My right calve tensed violently and it was all I could do to hold back my scream of pain.

I bit my lip and peirced the skin, I had to focus all of my energy had to be put into running - running for my life.

The sidewalk became more and more overgrown the farther I ran. I couldn't risk falling, tripping over the overgrowth would result horribly. I leapt out into the road and continued running. My leg burned and my mouth was dry, my irregular. But my mind kept telling me to run. Just run.

The road lit up before me, bright. Panicked, I looked over my shoulder.

"They won." I whispered, amazed. It was the last thing I said before the car hit my side and I landed on the hood. Pain shook through me and my eyes drifted closed and my subconscious took over.

***

The world around me was a blur, but the ground was hard and the pain was real. Body after body climbed over of me, whispering, grunting, and moaning obscenities in my ear as they ignored my protests. My clothes lay in shreds by my side, leaving my vulnerable to the five pairs of eyes and the chill of the brisk night air.

"Stop." I whispered once more, even though all hope had long since vanished. He slapped me at the sound of my unwilling voice, But I didn't see him or any of the others any more. I looked past them to a far off place, a safe place. A place where none of these men could even touch me, ever lay their filthy hands on me again.

And then I realized as he pulled away from me and I was attacked by another:

No such place exists.

Nothing

Sh... Nothing you hear and nothing you see is real. They know, they all know.

I watch from the seat of my car as the students laugh and meet up with their friends as they park in the lot, but I go unnoticed. Their smiles are fake, they're just putting on a mask, thinking I won't notice, but I'm smarter than that. I know their tricks. They're sick, they're all disgusting.

I sit in my car as the students file into the school one-by-one, group-by-group through the multiple sets of double doors. The final bell rings, and I'm the only one left outside. I look down at my lap, the seast belt still buckled over it and across my shoulder. It was my safety.

I didn't move, I just sat there, my eyes fixed on nothing, but stared straight ahead. If I thought long enough and hard enough, maybe it would all go away. Maybe I could become nothing.

But I knew that even if I ran, I would never be able to get far enough, I would never be able to hide from the truth.

I tugged at the sleeves of my sweater until they passed over my wrists and hib my thumbs. I couldn't stand to see the skin that could not be cleansed. I squeezed my eyes shut and leaned back in the seat. I couldn't leave my car and go inside, even if they didn't know. there are too many of them in there. And what if... what if they're in there? What could I do then.

I looked down at the wheel and turned my keys in the ignition. The car hummed to life, and I drove away from the school.

Anything that you think I could fix?
PostPosted: Sun Jan 02, 2011 5:40 pm

i really don't like stuff like this to be honest but this is really well written i will say, the sense of dread building up was very acute, the only things i could really suggest you improving on is maybe going more into the characters one way or another to provoke a more specific emotional response beyond simply the horror at what happens to Ashleigh. Just detail a few things, the relationship between Ashleigh and Ronnie, maybe more interaction to how Ashleigh is seen by the people at the school, just fleshing things out.

The only major issue i had was at the end when she gets hit by a car? and then what? was it the guys who ran her down? and it's just a little unbelievable that they would rape her in the middle of the street, but then again maybe it isn't, the setting isn't really given.

Like i mentioned before though stories with rape in them don't usually appeal to me and I don't really know much about the mentality that someone would have to be in to commit such a crime, the fact that she was being chased however and was then hit by a car and raped repeatedly doesn't quite match up with the next scene of her sitting in the car at school. it doesn't say that this was after some time or anything, and you usually don't just walk away from being hit by a car, even without being gang raped.

well written over all though, just run the editing iron over it and maybe flesh it out a bit more.

Anything that you think I could fix?

Your placement of dialogue tags is confusing.

Quote:
"I'll probably go, just have to clear it with the wardens, you know?" Ronnie stared at me blankly.

"Are you in trouble with them or something?" She asked as we moved forward in the line.

"No, I just typically tell them where I'm going to be. It's why they trust me." Ronnie nodded.

"So you will be going tonight then?" I sighed. Ronnie, Ronnie, Ronnie...

"Yeah, I'll be there."

In each line of this conversation, the dialogue tags (he/she said) make it seem as if the other person is speaking. Group the actions of each person with what they say.

Does that make sense?

Agreed. I honestly thought it was leading up to her getting scarred or disabled from being hit by the car. Gang-rape? Was not quite out of the blue, but didn't make any sense. It's like you just threw it in there because rape is oh-so-tragic a thing to happen. A topic like that should be handled with great care by any author, because it's such a touchy subject and is so damaging to the victims on so many levels.

I think that was one of the best pieces I've read on gaia. It was a nice length for what it was, and while gang-rape is never pleasant, you clearly weren't writing it to be erotic or anything of the like. The time skip was placed perfectly, and you gave *just* the right amount of detail to imply rape and describe the severity of it while not going overboard. I am surprised she survived being hit by a car, but i chalk it up to low speeds and mary-sueness. I actually think a rape in the road wasn't unbelievable in any sense, if that's were it took place. It has happened before, it's not as ridiculous as the other two made it sound.

Perhaps I'm not looking at it in a critiquing fashion, but this is how I view it as a reader.

One thing does bother me though, I was kinda put off by the abrupt closing. I understand it's a work in progress, but I'd like to see more!
