Oh, hello, John! Hello, Kirei-chan! biggrin
Anyway. I've got nearly two years of Japanese in school on me – 1A, 1B as independent study/credit by exam with a 93 on the final, and 2 this year – so I could give some tips when they're needed.

For those who are interested, here are the directions for enabling your comp to write in hiragana. (this is just for PC. As far as I know, it may be different for mac users)
Control Panel -> Regional and Language options -> Japanese -> Apply -> OK
Then, when you go to type something, make sure you have the cursor on the page and click the "EN" that should be in the bottom-left corner and select JP. An "A" should show up. Click it, then select hiragana and type away!

ああ、そうです。日本語はとてもむずかしいです!私は毎日べんきょうします。がんばってよ!
I'll translate for you: "Ah, I see/is that so. Japanese (language) is very difficult. I (have to) study everyday. Good luck/work hard!"
See? It's very basic. I don't actually know that much Japanese. I'm still far from being basic. And my accent sucks. -___-;
Anyways, I tried that pc tools thing, and it works good, except the characters type funny on gaia posts, so I first need to type it into word then copy and paste. Just a heads-up in case anyone else wants to try it.
As for learning Japanese, from what it seems, a lot of people try to learn at first, but then drop out after a while. sad You really need determination to learn it. If you're serious about learning it, then I suggest you first learn/memorize the hiragana/katakana charts, because you will be using them a lot. Start by memorizing maybe 5-10 (10 if you're learning the one's with maru or tenten after it) and then constantly check yourself to make sure you don't forget them. Flash cards are a good learning tool as well.
Anyways, がんばって! (ganbatte!)

If the characters aren't working on the internet, go to View -> Encoding -> Auto-select Then it should work fine 3nodding A lot of people find Japanese (and other non-Latin languages) daunting because of the alphabet. It's one of the hardest parts, but once you have it down it's a lot of fun blaugh

I actually thought the whole new writing system made for an easier transition than I would have with the usual alphabet in a different language… I guess it's just a sort of fresh slate for me. I wouldn't be seeing English letters and automatically associating them with English pronunciation, therefore having a hard time pronouncing the other language correctly… with the new letters, I could automatically connect each character with its proper pronunciation with no weird transition. It's its own thing. Did that make any sense?
Anyway, basically, I personally think having different writing systems makes things easier.

I have completed 3 years at college of Japanese study, and starting my fourth in Sept. I know some, so I could help if you wanted. You should probably start by memorizing hiragana if you don't already know it, then move to katakana, followed by simple kanji.
