Golden hooves pranced between the trees, a spring birdsong melody arising from Embri's lips as she skipped from path to path. Moonflower, foalbane, prickly lotus and silkear... Leaves, roots, buds and flowers, each was tucked away into her sack. To the observer her motions might seem random, but to the cream-coated mare they were as purposeful as the steps of a dance.

She glanced up through tangled bangs, impatiently flipping the hair from her eyes. Late afternoon. It was time to rest for a bit before the flight homewards. A small clearing full of mugwort and briarcap mushrooms appealed to the flame-maned alicorn, and she settled down to catch her breath, renewing herself from the calm, living embrace of the Forest.

That was, until an unwelcome sound intruded on her awareness. Hooves pounding, none too gently, branches whipping about. Someone was running down the trails with little care for their passing. Embri's ears flicked back against her skull, flicking forward again as they caught a second set of sounds, this time distressed. Something was not right.

The mare rose, slipping through the forest silently towards whatever, whomever, was stomping about in the undergrowth.

Sengdroma had been told to find a place in deep wood to bed down, to listen to nature, to learn it’s song, to listen as it spoke. Maion had often talked about listening to the night’s song, but this seemed a bit ridiculous to her. She had come to Sofiel to learn to fight and defend, to learn how to protect her herd…to protect the family that she hoped to have one day. She had agreed to stay with Sofiel, to prove to Maion that she was worthy. She might not be an angeni, but she was just as good as any other Soquili. She would prove it to him…if she ever saw him again.

Moving quickly, her eyes searched for a place suitable to stay hours. She needed a small clearing, or an area that was just thick enough in underbrush that she could hide her colored coat. Her stomach growled….she needed food first. Seng had spent her adult life close to her lake, she was not use to the vegetation here in the deep forests. She followed her nose, tracing a sweet scent in the air, berries. She had found herself eating more since she had been in this area, the food here just didn’t seem as filling as that which she was use to. She couldn’t wait to go back home, but she had many months left here with Sofiel. They had yet to start combat, and that, that would he a long road.

Seng slowed her pace to a slow and steady gait, closing her eyes for moments at a time, she lifted her nose to better follow the scent of food. Taking only a few steps at a time, she was close. Finally! Her eyes caught sight of brightly red colored berries on a prickle bush. Breakfast.

"I would not eat those if I were you." The voice came seemingly out of the forest as Seng stretched her head towards the berries.

A shadow separated itself from the foliage, leaves sliding aside as a golden spiral horn emerged first, followed by a leaf tangled mane. "You're not from around here." It was a statement rather than a question, as Embri stepped out onto the forest trail.

"Those," She motioned towards the prickly thorn bush with red berries, "Are crockleberries, well on their way to fermenting. Unless you enjoy staggering about like a tree struck bird, I'd suggest a different meal." Embri arched her brow at the lily-patterned mare. And I don't relish the thought of having someone staggering about in the forest all afternoon making a racket.

Seng’s head shot up at the sound of the female’s voice. She hadn’t expected anyone else out in the forest today. Her eyes settled on the pale mare with flaming mane and elegant horn. “Oh!” she turned away from the berries, her stomach grumbled again. “No, No I’m not. But thank you for the advice.” She nodded her head in greetings. She was afraid Sofiel would not be appreciative of her returning in a drunken state at nightfall. She peered once again at the berries and the leaves of the bush, putting them to memory so that she would not make that mistake in the future. “They just smelled so sweet,” she offered a half a smile as her stomach once again rumbled.

Poor little grounder, you'r'e out of your element, as plain as the horn on my face. I do wonder how you came to be in such a backwards part of the great Forest. Embri whuffled, blowing air out her nostrils in the equine version of a sigh.

"There were some good mugworts a few clearings back. Few plants in this part of the forest are noxious but many can have... undesirable side effects, for the unwary. I'm Embri." The alicorn turned and moved down the forest path, glancing over her shoulder at the green and blue mare.

Your stomach rumblings are audible even to me, and it seems doubtful I'll get any more peace this day... and it has been a while since I shared a meal with anyone.

At this point, Seng would likely settle to eat bark off of a tree if it meant filling her belly and keeping the hunger pains from the lack of breakfast before being sent on her daily task.

"Mugworts?" her ears perked, she had never heard of such thing. Sofiel had taught her some of the plants, but apparently not enough or near all of them. Her head tilted as the mare announced herself. "Embri..." The name rolled off of her tongue nicely, "It's pretty. I'm Sengdroma,"

Her voice was soft, as always. She took a few steps towards the mare's direction. "Do you mind if I join you?" her ears flickered, she hoped Embri wouldn't mind. Seng definately didn't want to get ahold of anything bad. Her stomach had not been feeling well as it was.

"I'd be happy for the company, eating is a rather dull chore by oneself. What brings you to this backwater part of the great Forest, young one?" Ah to be young again... spry of step and wide of eye, the whole world a new adventure.

"Mugworts are quite tasty, along with having several useful herbal properties." Embri left it at that, most other Soquili were not interested in the varied details of her profession nor herbcraft, unless they themselves were healers. She trotted between the towering treetrunks and skirted patches of brush, backtracking towards the clearing.

She trotted up to join the mare, "Thank you." she offered more of a smile than she had before. "I'm in training," she stopped before saying more. She wasn't sure if it would be proper of her to go into much detail. Seng was not use to having mares, outside of her family, for company.

Her ears flickered again as Embri talked. She seemed quite knowledge-able of the surrounding areas, Seng was intrigued. "She must be from around here," she thought to herself. "Could you teach me a bit more?" her eyes locked onto the mare, she was quite interested to see what she could learn about these different plants that Sofiel had not told her.

Embri arched an eyebrow momentarily, a bit surprised. "Certainly, if you are curious. Most of our kind find my calling rather uninteresting, unless they need my particular services." The mare trotted on a few moments more, glancing about.

"This one for example, is applemint." She nipped a leaf off a tall scraggly looking plant crowned with fuzzy lace flowers. "You don't usually see it in the forest except in clearings. A very nice flavour, cleans the mouth, useful for covering up less pleasant tastes. And it won't make you lose your senses. Safe to eat but you'll probably not want an entire meal of it." Embri chuckled good naturedly.

If it wouldn't have embarassed her, Seng would have squeaked at the mare accepting her request of teaching her as they walked along. She moved up closer to the mare, peering down at the plant she spoke about. Once Embri was done, she put her nose down towards the applemint, sniffing it gently. After her small sniff, she gently took a piece in her mouth and mawed it around for a moment, a curious look on her face. It was slightly sweet, not overbearing. Like a palette cleanser almost.

Once her mouth was clear, she looked back up to Embri, now more curious about her as well. "What services?" her questions was short and to the point, much like her other conversations. She didn't understand why Soquili would find this boring, but then, she loved learning anything new.

"Oh, a variety of things." Embri shrugged, fluffing out one wing before resettling the feathers. "mostly I tend the small ills of life, and look after mares expecting foals. That's actually why I'm out this far today, looking for more feverfew and campanula. Some plants can be hard to find."

Embri was off trotting again, nose full of the distinctive aroma of mugwort. The stuff grew like a weed wherever it could take root in poor soil. "Almost there."

Something teased at the edges of her senses. Surreptitiously the mare glanced over her shoulder, eyeing Seng. Why does she nag at my unconcious thoughts? I'm missing something.

"That sounds lovely!" Sengdroma loved foals, she had neices and nephews and the like. "I hope to one day ha...." she stopped mid-sentence. She didn't want to think of Maion...Not today, not right now. "Nevermind."

She took to a trot following in behind Embri. She was quite intrigued as to what these Mugworts were. It was another type of vegetation that Sofiel had failed to tell her about. How did he expect her to find food with so many types of plants being off limits here? Perhaps he wanted her to learn on her own?

She watched closely to the flowing orange and gold tail in front of her, making sure that she didn't run into her traveling companion for the day if she should decide to make an abrupt stop.

A small clearing opened up in front of the two mares, barely more than a few tree heights across. A moss covered log, already being devoured by the creeping vines and younger plants indicated the source of the clearing. Some seasons ago one of the forest giants must have toppled, taking out a few of its neighbours.

A tall weedy looking plant with flower tipped ends grew in profusion here, amongst the mushrooms thriving on the rotting timber, flaxen wild oats and shy clover.

"This is mugwort," Embri pointed towards the many point-tipped leafed plants. "it's sometimes used for vision quests, amongst other things. I've never found it particularly enlightening though, just tasty."

Seng's eyes looked over the clearing in awe, this is just the type of little space she needed to study. She would have to remember how they arrived here, she would come back.

Slowly she moved over towards the mugwort, following the lead of her new teacher. "Seers use this?" she inquired? She had always figured that those with the vision just..had them. Her head tilted slightly as she studied the plant, again smelling it before taking a small bit in her mouth. It had a rather, unique, flavor to it. She wasn't sure if she enjoyed it just yet or not.

"How long have you studied plants, Embri?" she knew with much time came vast knowledge and this mare, she had it.

"I don't even remember how long, Seng... a very long time. Seers do sometimes make use of mugwort, and those who's foals are late or-" Foals. It all clicked into place in Embri's mind. That's what had been bothering her, Seng's scent.

She stepped towards Seng and pressed her nose against the other mare's belly. This was no time for social niceties and she'd deal with the possible fallout from breaching Seng's personal space later. The scent was faint but detectable, one Embri was most familiar with.

"Spit it out, now!" Embri commanded, body language fairly yelling I mean it.
