Okay, so in our first period band class, the clarinet section is mad eup of our senior sl, me and another sophomore girl, and two freshman girls.

Well, my band doesn't really do chairs. Instead, oru bd choses what part we play on each song.

Well, right when concert season started, he told all the clarinets that we would be cycling the parts, so we would all get the chance to play all the different parts.
He gave our sl first part first, and then there was a sophomore and a freshman on each lower part.
Here is where the issue strikes.

We get the next piece. He switches up the lower parts. SL is still on first. I quite enjoy first. I mean, i don't mind lower parts in this higher band, since they are still a bit challenging, but I still do love having melodies and solos. In fact, I'm probably the only clarinet in my band who likes solos. Yet, on every single song, our sl has first part on every song. Yet all of us are switching around our parts. I was talking to my part-partner(did I mention that it is always the same two on the same part?) about this, and she said it was because our sl was "first chair". How come she gets a chair, and automatic first chair, when we don't?

I mean, if this was how it was in all the sections, that would be a diffeent story. but the trumpet sl only has one first part. The saxophone sl plays second part when there is one. Our saxophone playing dm plays second part when there is one. Why can't our sl play lower parts. Worst part: She wants lower parts. Yet she gets getting first part, and nobody else does.

Is this fair? Do you have any advice as to how I can break it to my bd how unfair this really is?

It seems your in a band with serious needs for chair testing.

First off, I would ask to talk to the seniors first. (Sorry but I can't read slang, and I am guessing you are talking about seniors and my grammar isn't very good. English isn't my first languish.) Ask the seniors if you could have the part, since there isn't any "chairs." You could also challenge them for the part, but asking for a copy for their part, and then with the band director there, have a playing test, to see if you can play the part.

I am in a college band and we don't have chairs. Normally we choice what part we want to play. Sometimes, if another person wants to play the part we just ask them to give us their part. It works out really nice. Anyways.

You could always talk to the band director. Maybe he/she feels that the younger grades don't want the harder pieces so he gives it the "older more experienced group. " All you have to do is ask the band director and see what happens.

To answer you question is it fair. That depends, for some people giving them a harder part isn't fair. Because they feel like they would never be able to play it justly, that they will get f restated and quit. The older ones would get so board getting a part that is just too easy and quit trying to improve themselves on their own. It's hard to keep a perfect balance.

If the seniors are just holding on the the music and not letting anyone else try their part then it is unfair.

That's kinda how we used to do things until our teacher changed, so I get ya. "First chair"/Section leader goes to the highest grade by default I'm guessing?

Try talking to your BD about it as an entire section, or schedule a section practice and prove that you guys really want the part and are better at it.
