Jada's hands were clutched carefully around a large egg as she waited by the warm kitchens. She'd sent a message to Folen through one of the weyrchildren asking him to meet her. It was a belated winter gift, since she'd had nothing to give him. At the time, she'd not known her gold firelizard, the ever-lively Allegretto, was with a clutch- one that had proven to be of a fairly good size for a firelizard. There had been several very large eggs, one of which she was certain was a gold. This one, Jada hoped would be a beautiful brown or bronze for her friend.
Allegretto had danced about her girl anxiously as Jada lifted the egg, going to the point of crying out in distress as the young woman wrapped the beautiful egg up in a warm, clean cloth. But the gold was a responsible mother, and curled defensively around the rest of the clutch as Jada had moved in its general direction again. Instead as Jada had slipped away from the clutch, the gold had shrieked at her reproachfully, her cries following the dark-haired girl until the door closed behind her.
Hopefully Allegretto would forgive her quickly, for Jadamirei had plans for the other eggs too. One for her new "friend" Y'kar, perhaps, whose dragon Kannaroth so loved firelizards. And one for Yulu. Certainly one for Tethis, who had acquired Dolcissimo for her. Taking a seat in the hall, she watched the people rushing by about their daily tasks, holding the precious egg close to her to keep it warm.
