User Image Mtumbi had casually got up this morning, then casually walked along the beach to let the waves casually lap at his paws, and then he casually joined his family and pride for breakfast before settling with his siblings and the pombuka. Casually of course.

For 'casual' was the best way to describe Mtumbi. He never did anything too excitedly, nor too lack-lustre. He lived up to the saying of 'cool as a (sea) cucumber.'

That didn't mean he could be easily entertained. He had yet to perform his Ba'Ushofo, so as per traditions of the pride it meant he had to stick close to the pombuka and the other pomboo, which at the moment consisted of mostly youngsters, plus his adolescent littermates. And Tipwa of course.

With a glance to the pombuka on duty this morning, he saw that they were quite busy playing with the really young ones and felt that he would be safe to venture off for a shirt while, just to the water's edge of course. Still within sight and earshot. Mtumbi lurched to his feet and walked in smooth steps, shaking off a bit of sand as he went, not that you would notice because he did it so casually.

Once at the water's edge, it wasn't long before he spotted something wiggling beneath the wet-sand's surface. He went to inspect it and just as he bent low to sniff the sand, a baby sea turtle popped up from the sand!

Mtumbi jumped back, in a rare moment where he wasn't composed and casual, and looked at the tiny beast with curiosity.

It hadn't been long since his rites and he still felt slightly drawn towards the pomboo, after all he had spent most of his life livign with the rest of the cubs of the pride and now he was clased as an adult, well, he still liked to pop his head in. As a guard, in training, he spent a lot of his time on the outskirts looking in, but today he was off and that meant a beeline for his old friends and maybe a little time to play int he water and on the beach.

Poseidon paused as he saw the other youngster, he knew the other male, breifly at least, as a guy born about the same time as himself, which meant that they were sort of brothers of age, only he knew that the blue coated male hadn't had his rites yet. That didn;t mean they couldn;t still be friends.

"Ahoy thar matey!" The black, white and pink male called plodding up to the other male, sinking slightly in the sand as he plodded towards him. Poseidon was not unlike the rest of his family in size, he was bulky, tall and at the moment gangly but he would soon grow in to his limbs and become a giant not unlike his father, mother and older siblings. "What be ya got thar laddy? A wee turtle?"

As Mtumbi was so casual, he wasn't phased in the slightest when the other adolescent approached him AND started speaking in a thick and unusual accent. He was more concerned for the small blackish critter near his feet that was struggling to the water, and the increasing number of wiggling masses beneath the sand.

"A what?"

Poseidon chuckles and winks a golden eye " A turtle laddy, ye be gotten one aneath yer claws, it be wantin' to tha sea." He grins broadly "My pa tol' me bout turles, says a lion can ride on a full grown one, course, ya canna beleive everything ya ol' man says eh?" He grins and chuckles happily. "Best we be watchin tha skies, tha birds'll be a comin soon. Thats what pa says any way."

Mtumbi must have been an expert linguist because he understood every word, abbreviated or not, straight away, having never really conversed with Poseidon all that much. They'd play-wrestled and whatnot, things all cubs do. Talking extensively isn't something all cubs do.

"A turr-tle...hmmm, not heard of it before...looks nothing like us, or the 'lions of the sea' in the all the fables," he mused out loud to himself and to Poseidon.

On the comment of fathers and not believing every tale they spin, Mtumbi could only smile awkwardly, his calm exterior flickering for a moment. He didn't know his father all that well and when he did talk to him, he tended to speak in more riddles than this fellow adolescent.

"And what do you mean the birds will be coming...?"

Poseidon tilts his head to the air and the forming flock above them. "Waitin' fer their brekkist, s'only us stanin' here thats stoppin um swoopin' in. Pa says that tha nestin birds come down 'n' pick off a few 'o tha lil turtles to take back to their nests for their kids munchies." He looks down at the tiny turtles. "They make their way ta tha sea an pa says that one day they'll be a comin' back and makin more babies in tha sands. Tis tha way tha turtles live." He grunts and nods "Pa says turtles can live to be 'unreds of years old like tha gods, dunno if that be another white lie or not though, never aktully spoken to a biggun afore an' tha littluns ave nout in their heads cept for their need fer tha sea."

Mtumbi looked up the same time as Poseidon, though he wasn't sure why, then looked back at him again, then back up at the circling sea-birds. This little revelation seemed to horrify Mtumbi! They were gonna eat these little creatures!?! But they were only babies!

He looked down again at the increasing number of brave little baby turtles, all fighting through wet sand, only to then drag and waddle themselves toward water. To be picked off by mangey birds in the process was just not right!

"If thats true then I'm not moving from this spot until they've all made it safe to water," he said with conviction and broke his calm exterior again. He seemed quite passionate about his cause.

"Ya hear that you flying murderers! You ain't getting these baby...turr-tles!" he yelled to the skies as loud as he could, scattering some of the birds, and his powerful speech ruined only by his new grasp on the word 'turtle.'

Poseidon chuckles "alright lad, ah'll be a helpin' ya then, s'good ta see tha lil fellahs make their way to the sea and gettin off in ta the big blue." He grins and looks at the other adol with a chuckle "Ey laddy, tis maybe your mish ta protect tha turtles eh? Yehv' got one on your arse after all." He chuckles watching the turtles before turning hishead to the sky and roaring with his loudest roar. "Har off ya go budgies, aint no turtlins ere for ya today!"

Mtumbi was pulled from his menacing glares and grumblings at the birds to look at his backside. He'd always had that strange marking on his back thighs and never quite knew what it was. He looked at it, then at a baby turtle, then back at his marking.

Well I'll be drowned...

He smiled quite widely then and continued to keep watch on the skies and his impromptu 'brood.'

It was then that he noticed the baby turtles weren't all emerging from the same spot. In fact, they were emerging all along this stretch of beach! He caught sight of some a good few paces away, and the birds just hovering.

"Oi!" he shouted and leapt to the rescue. "Clear off!"

The gull ka-kawwed and gave him such a dirty look before returning to the skies.

Poseidon followed after the chocolate and blue male manacking to klip a gull on his way past "haha! praps we should rename ya tutle lad eh? Ye'll be needin' a sutible name if ya gfunna protect tha lil beasites."

He grins a roguish grin passing the other male and roaring as a group of birds started to float down towards the helples little creatures making their way to the sea.

"Yar saviour of turtles, ye olde turtle butt?" He grins playfully, this was a decent way to spend his day off, making a friend and protecting something small and helpless, it appealed to hus guarding nature.

Mtumbi wasn't quite sure how he felt about having a new name, or maybe it was because this other didn't actually -know- his name. Come to think of it, he hadn't asked his name either.

"I dunno about another name...my name's Mtumbi...it might already mean 'turtle' if my mum already knew what that marking on me was," he said calmly and matter-of-factly as he ambled behind Poseidon.

He was getting increasingly frustrated that as soon as they left one spot of baby turtles, the birds would hover over another and would require another dash of bravery.

Poseidon nodded "aye, mebe ye be right mtumbi. Mah names Poseidon, pa says tis summit ta do with a god 'o tha sea." He shrugs his shoulders and take s a deep breath roaring down the beach, causing a right rukus "haha! I be thinkin' we're gunna wake everyone an 'is uncle up lad." He smiles and shakes his head "unfortunately, ya canna save um all yanno, they gets ta tha sea an' they ave more enemies than this lot of flyin rats."

"I always thought the sea was female...all the stories say its that way anyways..." he said out loud, although afterwards he wondered if he should have done. Maybe Poseidon would have ended up with a feminine name otherwise.

He continued to charge about this stretch of beach, roaring and shouting and even jumping occasionally. It seemed like they had been doing this a while now, and surely lots of baby turtles had made it safely.

But then Poseidon's comment stopped him in his tracks, to watch as the little black floating objects in the foam embarked an a dangerous journey.

To somewhere Mtumbi could not follow.

..."wha...? But...thats not really fair...they're only...babies."

"Haha! she be a wonnerful lady indeed, but she has many fellahs to satisfy 'er needs and poseidon be one of um. Mah pa as a real good story bout poseidon, yer should come an speak to 'im sometime, 'e likes fillin in tha blanks of stories." He chuckles and takes a few steps forwards.

Pausing he smiles half heartedly at the blue maned male. "Aye, well tha turtle, 'e as a ard life to begin with, but as mah pa says, once they grows up, they can be a livin ferever, I guess, tha price fer a long life is a difficult start." He sighs looking at the sea and the little bodies vanishing beneath the waves.

"Least we saved um from tha sky any place, they'll maybe remember an' come back one day, let ya know ya helped um make it. Think o it that way lad, we let them get to tha sea."

Despite Poseidon's best efforts, it didn't much to totally lift Mtumbi's spirits. They had successfully saved ALL of the baby turtles, and their presence had not only kept birds at bay but the crabs and other beach scavengers as well.

He watched mournfully as the last baby turtle made it to the foam and surf, was rolled over a few times in its soft caress, and then taken out to the deep blue.

It was a nice thought, the turtles all returning as adults to say thank you one day and then it hit him-

"...I might be an old old lion when they return, especially if they live to be as old as gods do!"
