So, I'm currently going for a German major... but I'm also thinking about doing a double major of German and French with a minor in Czech (as far as I know, UNL might be one of the only ones in America to teach it).

I find German super easy, and I've taken French for 4 years in high school... but I don't know. I already know it's going to cost an arm and a leg, but I still want to.

Thoughts?

I'd say go with whatever one you enjoy the most. I think French is the most used out of all three though, so that might be the most practical in terms of jobs and whatnot.

Actually, German is spoken by more people world wide. Here is a more current one too.

But I just wanted to improve my French along with it since I took 4 years of it already and I have a friend who is a French major that I could practice with. Czech I wanted to minor in because it would probably be the only time I'd be able to take it in a class setting... If UNL had Finnish, I'd be taking that instead. xp

Though, I guess I have a ways to go before I have to worry about that. I'm in my third semester at SCC so I don't have to worry about it until I actually transfer to UNL. That will probably be sometime next year.

Until then, I'm self-studying 5 different languages... sweatdrop Sunday through Saturday: German and French, Finnish gets 4 days (sun, tues, thurs, sat), greek gets 2 days (mon and fri) and Italian gets one (wednes)... razz

I almost went to study cultural anthropology and linguistics after high school but ended up joining the military instead because I wanted to learn a language and be able to use it and stuff. That experience was a bit harrowing... I'd say to go with whatever's going to make you happy. I personally have decided that rather than majoring in languages, I'm going to get a degree in something that brings me into contact with speakers of foreign languages. That choice was basically to go for a teaching degree (which I'm working on now) and then get a Master's in teaching English as a second language. I like languages a lot so I figure that if I'm teaching people English as a second language I'll be able to come into contact with lots of people that speak foreign languages. Plus that way I won't be acting as an authority in a language for which I'm not a native speaker and I'll be able to do my job with confidence. I think that it's fine if you just go to school and do whatever you feel the happiest doing. You might want to try and think about what you're going to do with the degree after you get it though.
