Scientific Name: Megaloceros giganteus Scientific Name Meaning: Giant Antler Pronunciation: meg-ah-LOSS-er-oss Height: 7 ft at the shoulder (2.1M) Weight: upwards of 700kg (1540lbs) Antlers: spanned up to 12 ft (3.65M) and alone weighed 35-40kg (77-88lbs) Closest living relative: Fallow deer Found in: Europe, Northern Asia, North Africa, and even a related form found in China Habitat: Open woodland and forest edges.
Believe it or not, the Irish Elk is neither exclusively Irish, nor is it an elk. It is actually the largest specie of deer found ever. The name Irish stuck due to excellently preserved fossils found in the peat bogs of Ireland. It is believed to have evolved through the Pleistoncene Epoch era, and living from 400,000 - 9,500 years ago. Like deer of modern ages, the Irish Elk was herbivorous. However, its huge antlers posed a problem. Randomly selected for the largest rack, overendowed males passed on their large antler characteristics to the next generation, therefore creating even larger antlers as the norm, and so on. The antlers, believe it or not, were lost and regrown each year, and were actually thought to be the downfall of this great creature. It is believed that the antlers ended up evolving so large that the animals could no longer lift their heads, or got them entangled between the trees.
(More facts to come as we stumble upon them!)
