As they say when the parents are away the children shall play, or at the very least get into a lot of trouble. It went without saying that leaving two young mers alone was generally a bad idea. Leaving Naida alone was a very, very bad idea.
Naida had been bored to say the least, more so because they hadn't visited the Borderlands in a long while. It didn't help that Grandfather wasn't going to go on a hunt, no... he was busy. Looking helping Grandmother look after the new aunties. Now, Naida came upon a brilliant idea, why not go by herself? She had seen it done enough times that she was pretty sure she knew how to get there by herself.
Of course she wouldn't be going by herself, she decided it would be much more 'fun' to have Jair along for the ride. So it was she and Jair would go to the Borderlands by themselves, which was why the portal room door was open and the reason why Naida was floating in the air with both hands on the door that she figured would lead to the Borderlands.

Jair had been warned many times about listening to Naida - who was at times just as convincing as Nina in her arguments about where they should go and what they should do - but like any boy, he didn't always listen to his parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He liked the idea of adventure, and he had never been to the Borderlands before! It didn't take any convincing at all to get him to agree to go with Naida ... she had simply asked him if he wanted to go, and he had been all for it.
He was right behind Naida, his hands clasped together eagerly, his green 'legs' shimmering with the same sparkle as the tail that they were replacing.
"I'm ready when you are," he grinned at his cousin.

Naida grinned and pushed the door open. Now there was a reason why the portal room door was always kept closed even when there were people inside. There were many reasons why the portals had their own room, Kaito having been one of them.
Donovan had never quite gotten over the fact that Kaito ran through the portal faster than one could blink. So he insisted they keep the door closed, the door wasn't closed this time and the open that Naida opened the door, something.... or someone.
Dashed in nearly bowled over Jair and dash through the other door that Naida opened.
"Hey!" Naida protested swimming (flying) in, "Come on Jair!"

Jair cried out as he spun and fell to the ground, his legs coming together to reform his tail again.
"Just a second!" he called after Naida. He muttered the words of his spell, and in an instant his legs were back again, and he ran after her. "What the heck was that?"

"I don't know....." Naida admitted it looked like a rainbow.
She could hear whatever it was hitting something with a thud though it was quite far away. Maybe a wall? Because as it turned out for some reason instead of the clear skies and the green grass it was dark and full of stone.
"I don't think this is the right place?" Naida looked around thoughtfully, "Oops...."

Jair blinked and looked around. "I think I've been here before," he murmured uncertainly, "but ... that was a ... very ... very long time ago ..."
He turned to Naida, his face pale. "I think we're at the palace in the Southland," he said, his tone filled with awe. "I thought we were going to go to the Borderlands! You were there so many times, I thought you knew the way!"
But even if they wanted to turn around and go back, they really couldn't - not without finding whoever it was who had snuck in there with them ... and he had a feeling that it just might be Iris, and that might take some time.

"I thought this was the right door!" Naida protested.
Of course they now had to find who or whatever it was that was stuck with them before they could go back.
Naida kept going forward to try and find the thing or person who came along with them.
"We can go back as soon as we find the other."

"Unless I'm mistaken," Jair muttered as he broke into a run, "I think it was Iris. No one else is that colourful - and that fast."
He kept one hand on the wall as he ran, praying that they wouldn't get lost. He had heard too many stories about this labyrinth. On the bright side, he figured that as long as they didn't see any skeletons, he wouldn't lose his head.
"And just watch her make it through here long before we do," he rolled his eyes. "I hope she doesn't cause too much trouble for anyone on the other end."

Iris of course was far ahead and was pawing at a wall, she could feel the air from the other side.
"Mew?"
She pawed it a bit more.
"It is supposed to be this dark in here?" Naida asked.
It had been a long time for her too and her memory wasn't that good. Even though technically it wasn't that long ago.

"I don't know," Jair admitted, glancing around and noticing for the first time that only about half the torches were lit. "We were just new when we came here last time. Like ... a week old or something like that. I don't really remember much ..."
He looked over at Naida. "Do you know which way we're supposed to go?" he asked her. "I know Serenity said something about following history backwards, but I don't know the history here!"

Naida peered around, she didn't see any place where there could be a history written. Of course it didn't help that it was dark down here to begin with so she had to squint.
But she could hear mewing, apparently Iris thought if she mewed enough the wall would open or something like that.
"I can hear Iris though! Maybe we should follow that?"

"Sure," Jair agreed. "At least we'll be together then. And maybe then we can find our way out of here, one way or the other."
He looked around - or at least, he tried to. "I really don't remember it being like this," he murmured, getting a little worried. "Something ... isn't right ..."

Naida mused for a moment, "At least it only goes one way."
She could only offer that as a piece of consolation, especially since they still had to find Iris.
"She's probably just up ahead."
Indeed she was busy...
Iris was body tackling the door when she wasn't pawing at it or mewing. Mewing generally worked especially with her father she found, so she thought it might work here.

Just before Jair and Naida could catch up with Iris, the door burst open, letting her spill out into the corridor. There were two guards there, and as the neko burst out, they each grabbed one of her arms, trapping her.
"Who are you?" one of them demanded harshly. "What are you doing in there?"
The other one was peering further into the corridor, and he stared at Jair and Naida. "Wait," he said, peering into the darkness. "Fetch Sir Elros, if they have come from Gaia he will know them."

Iris looked one way, and then she looked the other, and was trying to decide at the moment who to bite first. She looked both ways and mewed pitifully instead.
Naida all the while flew out of the corridor her eyes adjusting to the bright light. She certainly didn't recognize this place.
